Description

SPECIFICATION Filter elements This invention relates to filter elements.
The specific embodiment of filter element described herein has been designed with the exacting requirements of the dairy industry in mind but the invention is not necessarily restricted to filter elements for filtering milk.
The filter element of the present invention comprises a generallyfrusto-conical frame comprising a disc defining the narrower end of the element, an annular ring defining the other end of the element, and ribs connecting the disc and ring and spaced along the generators of the frustum, and a mesh spanning the spaces between the ribs, and the ribs and disc, and the ribs and ring.
A particularly preferred filter element of the invention is one which is adapted for mounting two or more such filter elements one within the other. Such a filter element is particularly useful for the filter or strainer which forms the subject of our co-pending Application No. 42125/78 from which the present application is divided in accordance with the provision of Section 15(4) of the Patents Act 1977.
An embodiment of the preferred filter element of this invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows a cross-sectional view of a filter or strainer of co-pending Application No. 42125/78 aforesaid in which are mounted two filter elements of the present invention.
The milk filter shown in the drawing comprises a two-part plastics housing 1 possessing a central longitudinal axis 2 and formed by a body member 3 and a lid or end closure 4. The body member, which is of plastics, and preferably TPX (methylpentene polymer), is generally cup-shaped.
The lid 4 consists of a one-piece moulding and has integrally formed therewith an inlet tube 5 which opens to the interior of the housing 1 on axis 2 and an outlet tube 6. Thus, the lid 4 may be coupled into a flow line, for example on the output or pressure side of a milk pump. The body member 3 has a generally cylindrical circumferential side wall 7 upstanding from a base 8 which is inwardly dished at its centre and which is provided with a threaded aperture 9 for receiving an externally threaded drain and bleed plug 10. The edge portion of lid 4 is internally threaded and the uppermost portion of the body member 3 is externally threaded so that the two housing portions can be releasably interfitted by screwing them together. An O-ring 13 mounted on a thickened rim 12 of body member 3 renders the Connection between the two housing portions fluid tight.
The housing is provided with filter means, here shown in the form of two generally frusto-conical filter elements 14 and 1 5 of the present invention received within the housing symmetrically disposed about axis 2.
Each element is formed by a frame formed of plastics material from which is supported plastics mesh. As will be seen, the narrower end of filter element 14 is defined by a disc 16, the other end being defined by an annular cylindrical ring 17. A plurality of equi-spaced ribs 18 extending along generators of the frustum extend between disc 16 and ring 17 and are integral therewith and with a plurality of circular or circumferential ribs 19, which together with disc 16, ring 17 and ribs 18 provide the frame for filter element 14. The spaces defined between the ribs and between the ribs and ring 17 and between the ribs and disc 16 are spanned by plastics mesh which may be integrally moulded with the frame in manufacture or alternatively joined thereto. The preferred material for the filter element is nylon.
As will be apparent from the drawing, the outer surface of annular cylindrical ring 17 mounts an 0ring 20 which provides a seal between ring 1 7 and the confronting inner surface of body member 3.
Filter element 1 5 is generally similar to filter element 14 but may suitably have a finer mesh, so providing for step-wise filtration. The mesh size for both elements 14 and 15 is suitably in the range of between 40 and 500 microns. In the most preferred arrangement, filter 14 has a coarse mesh of 120 microns while filter 1 5 has a fine mesh of 75 microns.
The outer surfaces of at least some of the ribs 18 of filter element 14 are provided with support webs 21 and at least some of the ribs of element 15 are provided on their inner sides with location webs 22. As will be seen from the drawing the webs 21 and 22 serve to ensure correct location and proper spacing between the two filter elements. The outer side of disc 16 is provided with a shoulder or abutment at 23 to receive location webs 22. It will be noted that filter element 14 is also provided with the inwardly directed location webs and filter element 1 5 is also provided with the outwardly directed support webs, although these latter location webs and support webs serve no useful function. However, as will be appreciated, by arranging for the frames of the two filter elements to be essentially identical, this makes for ease of production.
As will also be clear from the drawing, the disc 16 of each filter element is integrally joined to a pipe section 24 having a first section extending into the interior of the filter element and a second and somewhat shorter section in axial extent and somewhat narrower section in radius extending in the opposite direction and provided with an 0ring 25 on its circumferential outer surface. O-ring 25 of filter element 14 seals against the inner surface of pipe section 24 of filter element 15 while O-ring 25 of filter element 1 5 seals against an inwardly directed pipe section 26 of lid 4.
To prevent the filter elements being placed within the housing in the wrong order we provide an interference web 31 within pipe section 24 of filter element 14.
The operation and advantages of the filter shown are described in detail in our co-pending Application No. 42125/78, supra, and will not be repeated hem.
