Abstract

A connector consists of a block 1 through which a main perfusion channel 2 passes, and which comprises a secondary channel 3, the secondary channel possessing an injection inlet 14 and an outlet 4 which emerges in the main channel 2 and is controlled by a seal 5 which is elastically deformable under pressure. The seal 5 is a hollow member of ogival internal shape, which is housed in the secondary channel 3 and which closely fits the internal surface thereof, thus blocking the outlet 4 by means of its concave part, which is directed towards the said outlet and is pierced with a micro-orifice 8. When a syringe (e.g. containing medicament) is inserted into inlet 14 and is pressurised, a pressure is created which forces the seal 5 open; the seal 5 closes automatically when this pressure drops. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Connector for discontinuous injections into a perfusion line The invention relates to a connector which makes it possible to carry out discontinuous injections into a perfusion line.
During the treatment of a patient under intensive care, it is frequently necessary to inject a limited determined dose of medicaments into his bloodstream. In most cases, this injection must be repeated at certain intervals depending on the type of medicament.
In general, this type of patient is already being subjected to perfusion or transfusion. The repeated discontinuous injection can thus be carried out by making a parallel connection to the perfusion line. When it is not being used, the connection is rendered leaktight by means of a tap or by means of a cap provided for this purpose. It is also possible to carry out the injection with the aid of a needle and a syringe, but this is not ideal when the operation is repeated many times.
The invention relates to a connector which makes it possible to gain access to the main perfusion line without carrying out manipulations other than connecting the syringe, the leaktightness being produced by means of an automatic device which is such that the pressure in the secondary channel ensures the communicarion with the main passage, the passage closing again automatically when this pressure drops.
According to the invention, the connector consists of a block through which the main perfusion channel passes, and which comprises a secondary channel, the secondary channel possessing an injection inlet and an outlet which emerges in the main channel and is controlled by a seal which is elastically deformable under pressure, characterised in that the said seal is a hollow member of ogival internal shape, which is housed in the secondary channel and which closely fits the internal surface thereof, thus blocking the said outlet by means of its concave part, which is directed towards the said outlet and is pierced with a micro-orifice.
The single figure of the attached drawing is a section of a connector according to the invention.
The connector is a block 1 which possesses a rectilinear main channel 2 and a rectilinear secondary channel 3, which extend in two perpendicular directions, the axes 6, 7 of the two channels being coplanar. The secondary channel emerges in the main channel via an outlet 4 opposite the inlet of the secondary channel.
The outlet 4 is blocked by means of a piece 5 made of plastic, for example made of rubber elastomer or of silicone. The piece 5 is of ogival or domed internal shape and its concave part is directed towards the outlet 4. The longitudinal axis of the piece is identical to that of the secondary channel.
The piece 5 comprises a shoulder 9 butting against a corresponding shoulder 10 on the wall of the secondary channel, and this defines the position of the piece in the channel.
The inlet 14 of the secondary channel is provided with an extension piece 19 which, on the one hand, constitutes a connector having an internal conicity suitable for receiving the outlet of an injection apparatus, and, on the other hand, serves as a support for a detachable cap 1 1 firmly fixed to the piece 19 by means of a clamp 12.
Preferably, the piece 19, the cap 11 and the clamp 12 are manufactured in a single unit.
The position of the piece 19 is defined, for example, by introducing one end 18 of the piece into the secondary channel and butting a shoulder 13 on the piece against the inlet edge of the secondary channel.
The piece 19 is fixed in the desired position by gluing or welding.
The piece 5 is pierced with a micro-orifice 8 which, when the pressure in the secondary channel increases, opens to a sufficient extent to ensure the communication between the two channels. When the secondary channel is at atmospheric pressure, the ogival shape of the piece ensures perfect leaktightness under the pressure prevailing in the main channel.
However, the piece made of elastomer must be sufficiently stiff to be perfectly leaktight during a pressure reduction in the main channel. However, the cap 11, which can be fitted to the secondary channel, provides total security in this situation.
The connector can be presented in two forms: either as such, that is to say as a piece which can be fitted to a perfusion line, a catheter or a cannula. In this case, the two ends of the main channel are adapted, for example as shown; or moulded or stuck directly onto a tube (cannula or catheter).
