The ends of the fibres can be plugged into an apertured plate 10 aligned with the disc 9 in a predetermined coded pattern related to the switching positions. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
A switch position indicating device
The invention relates to a switch position indicating device and more particularly but not exclusively to a high-voltage switch gear with an optical signalling device connected to control and monitoring equipment associated with the switching and transformer system.
In accordance with the invention therefore we provide a switch position indicating device comprising a switch having an operating element movable to different switching positions, a member coupled to said element and a plurality of optical transmitters and receivers, said member enabling light to pass between different selected pairs of transmitters and receivers at different switching positions of said element.
In a proposed device to be described in detail hereinafter two fibre optical waveguide runs each are used, one of which transfers the light signal from the control and monitoring system to the switching gear and the other one of which provides return messages from the switching gear to the control centre.
In another proposed illustrative embodiment, preferably five fibre optical waveguide cables are used, one of each being provided for the On and
Off command, one for supplying the return message light beam and one each for the On and
Off return message signal.
An object of the invention is to provide a switch position indicating device which transfers signals optically and is immune to electromagnetic or electrostatic interference.
In a preferred embodiment described herein a magnetic switch position indicating device carries on its switch shaft a code disc and on one or both sides of the disc optical transmitters and receivers are arranged in an adjustable manner.
Illustrating embodiments of the invention are shown in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 shows a longitudinal section of a switch position indicating device with transmitters and receivers on both sides of a perforated disc.
Fig. 2 shows a modification of the device shown in Figure 1 with reflectors or deflecting devices.
Fig. 3 shows a top view of a slotted disc.
Fig. 4 shows an alternative embodiment with a drum instead of a disc, and
Fig. 5 shows a modification of the embodiment shown in Figure 4.
Parts corresponding to one another have been provided with the same reference numerals.
In Fig. 1, 1 designates an actuating device for the signalling switch located on an element in the form a shaft 2. On this shaft cam discs 3, 4 are arranged which actuate electric contacts 5 to 8.
The shaft 2 also carries a member in the form of a code disc 9 which is perforated at different positions located on polar coordinates. The switch shaft is rotatably supported in a plate 10 which is perforated in a polar coordinate grid pattern so that the ends 11, 12 of optical fibres can be inserted at different positions.
In the embodiment shown in Figure 1, 11 designates the ends for optical output, and return bent ends 1 2 for optical input. The ends 12 may comprise bent, transparent plastic rods which conduct the light to the end of the optical fibre proper in the plate 10. Instead of a code disc 9 provided with slot-shaped or round holes, a disc consisting of a transparent material and provided with printed coding can be used.
Fig. 2 shows different arrangements of optical fibres in a switch position indicating device. At the left-hand part of the plate 10 a deflection prism 14 is mounted on an angled portion 13 in such a manner that the light emitted from the end of an optical fibre forming a transmitter 1 5 through a first hole in the coding disc 9 is deflected by the prism 14 through a second hole to the end of an optical fibre forming a receiver 1 6.
At the right-hand part of the coding disc 9 a mirror 1 7 is attached to the disc so that transmitter 1 8 and receiver 1 9 can be placed in very close proximity in the plate 10. At the righthand edge of the plate 10 a transmitter 20 is inserted the light from which is reflected by a 450 mirror 21 onto the receiver 23 mounted in the angled portion 22.
The most favourable construction, involving very little adjustment, is obtained if the coding disc is provided with reflecting markers so that all the ends of the optical fibres can be accommodated very close together on one side of the code disc.
In Fig. 3 a code disc 9 is shown which carries several rows of reflecting markers 24. Depending on the rotational speed of the switch shaft, the time when certain switch positions are reached can be signalled to a switch control centre or the relay house immediately or with delay.
Reprogramming is possible by simply changing the positions of the ends of the optical fibres which can be plugged into different holes in the plate 10.
The switch can be either a gang switch or a quick-break switch of the usual construction.
In switches with axial switching movement a coded member or disc can be arranged in a plane which is parallel to the axis of the switch.
The advantage of this device is that no electric signalling lines are required which can pick up inductive or capacitive noise voltages.
The coded members may be formed by the surface area of a cylinder in such a manner that the transmitting and receiver units can be arranged both inside and outside the cylinder as shown in Figure 4.
If the device works with reflecting markers, savings in space can be obtained by these markers being attached to the shaft or a sleeve on the shaft as shown for example in Figure 5.
The optical fibers comprising the transmitters and/or receivers may each be formed into a bundle so that both a transmitter and a receiver are arranged on the same surface, as shown at 25 in
Figure 5.
In the embodiments described above infra red light may be used by the optical fibres in the transmitters and receivers.
