Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to shelving systems This invention relates to adjustable shelving systems of the type hereinafter referred to as of the type specified, comprising a frame and at least one shelf, the shelf being adjustable into any one of a number of predetermined positions in the frame, and a method of adjusting said shelving.
Such shelving systems are particularly useful in libraries for example where the distance between adjacent shelves may need to be adjusted to accommodate different sized books, but such shelving systems are also useful in any other application wherein it may be desired to adjust the position of the shelves.
Previously, in shelving systems of the type specified, the shelves have been attached to the frame by bolts which pass through apertures in the shelves and are located in selected apertures in the frame and have nuts screwed thereon.
These systems have at least the following disadvantages.
First, it is inconvenient and slow to adjust the position of the shelves as the nuts and bolts securing the shelves to the frame need to be undone and then removed from the apertures.
Secondly, access is needed to both sides of the frame to which the shelves are bolted, to allow the bolts to be withdrawn or inserted and the nuts to be screwed off or on the bolts.
It is therefore an object of the invention to provide a new and improved shelving system in which the above mentioned problems are overcome or reduced, and a method of adjusting said shelving.
According to a first aspect of the invention we provide an adjustable shelving system of the type specified comprising at least one support member which is selectively engageable with first and second apertures provided in or on the frame, and a shelf being at least partially supportable on the support member.
The support member may comprise first and second substantially horizontal parts, said first part being engageable with said first one of said apertures and said second part being, adapted to abut the underside of the shelf, and a third part which is engageable with said second aperture in the frame, said second aperture being vertically spaced from said first aperture.
The first and second substantially horizontal parts may lie in the same plane, and the third part may be attached to the second horizontal part by a fourth part which extends downwardly from the second part towards the frame.
Thus the support member may form a rigid triangular brace which may at least partially, support the shelf.
The first and second horizontal parts may be connected together by a channel shaped part which is adapted to receive a depending side part of the shelf.
The apertures in the frame may be in the form of slots and the support member may be generally wider than the slots, the first horizontal part of the support member having a reduced width part which, in use, engages the walls of the first slot, and the third part having a reduced width part to enable it to engage the second slot.
A plurality of slots may be provided, arranged in vertical parallel spaced rows.
The shelf may comprise a horizontal support surface having a downwardly extending edge which, in use, partially conceals the support member.
Said depending part of the shelf may be permanently attached to the underside of the horizontal support surface or may be integral therewith.
The frame may comprise two side walls rigidly connected together by at least one horizontally extending member which may comprise a further shelf.
The horizontally extending member or members, may be bolted to the side walls of the frame or otherwise rigidly secured to the frame.
Each side wall of the frame may present towards the otherwise wall of the frame a substantially flat, slotted surface which extends from a rear edge of the side wall to a front edge of the side wall. This arrangement avoids objects which are stored on the shelves snagging on the side walls.
Each side wall of the frame may comprise inner and outer panels attached together, said slots being provided in said inner panels only.
A plurality of adjustable shelves may be accommodated in the frame, and each adjustable shelf may be supported by four members each engaged with first and second apertures.
According to a second aspect of the invention we provide a method of adjusting a shelf in a shelving system according to the first aspect of the invention, said method including the steps of engaging the support member with first and second apertures in the frame, and placing a shelf on the support member to at least partially support the shelf.
Where the support member comprises first and second substantially horizontal parts, said first part being engageable with the said first aperture, and said second part being adapted to abut the underside of the shelf, and a third part which is engageable with said second apertures in the frame, and where the apertures are in the form of slots and the support members are generally wider than the slots, and the first substantially horizontal part has a reduced width part which, in use, engages the walls of the first slot and the third part has a reduced width part to enable it to engage the second slot, the support member may be engaged with the first and second slots by inclining the support member and then inserting the first substantially horizontal part into the first slot, rotating it so that the first and second substantially horizontal parts are again substantially horizontal and so that the reduced width part of the first horizontal part engages the walls of the slot, and moving the support member vertically whilst engaging the third part with the second slot, until the third part of the support member abuts the bottom edge of the second slot.
The invention will now be described in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: FIGURE 1 is a partially exploded perspective view of an adjustable shelving system according to the invention, and FIGURE 2 is a perspective view through part of a shelf of the shelving system of Figure 1 showing a support member in engagement with two apertures in a part of the frame in accordance with the invention.
Referring first to Figure 1, there is shown a shelv ing system made of metal 10 comprising two substantially similar parts A, B welded or otherwise connected together. For convenience hereinafter, partAonlywill be described.
Although the shelving system shown is made of metal it may be made from any other suitable material. The system 10 comprises a frame 11 including side walls 1 1a, 1 1b, a top horizontal member 12a and bottom horizontal member 12b.
Each side wall 11a, 11b comprises two panels 13, 14, having integral 'L' shaped flanges 15 along their vertical edges which when in abutment as shown, gives a spacing between the two panels 13, 14 the purposes of which will become apparent hereinafter.
The spacings are covered at the top by a top cover 16 which is a push fit over the panels 13, 14 of both partsAand B.
If desired bottom edges 13b of the panels 13, 14 of the side members 1 1a, 1 1h of each part A, B may be secured in a bottom channel member 16b in order to add rigidity to the frame 11, if necessary.
The horizontal parts 12a, 12b may be used as shelves, and comprises a horizontal support surface 6 having integral depending flanges 5 at the front and rear, and integral depending flanges 7 at the sides.
Each of the panels 13, 14 and the depending side flanges 7 of the horizontal members 12a, 12b are provided with aligned apertures 17, which are adapted to accommodate bolts 19 which receive nuts (not shown) to secure frame parts 13, 14, 11, 12a and 12b together.
Thus the frame 11 of the system 10 when assembled is generally rectangular and a panel 9 is provided in space 18 as a back for the frame 11.
The inwardly facing panels 13 are provided, in addition to the apertures 17, with a plurality of equally vertically spaced slots 20 arranged in two parallel rows 21,22.
An adjustable shelf 25 comprises a horizontal support surface 26 and front and back depending parts 27 which terminate in inwardly upwardly inclined edge portions 28 (Figure 2).
Adjacent the sides of the horizontal surface 26 and depending from the undersidethereofthere is an L shaped side part 29 which has a cut-out 30.
Where the shelving system 10 is made of metal, the side part 29 is preferably welded to the underside of the horizontal surface 26, although if the system is made of any other material, it may be attached by other means such as rivetting.
The cut-out 30 is adapted to engage a support member 31 which comprises a clip having first and second horizontal parts 32,33 both of greater width than the slots 20, the first horizontal part 32 having a reduced width part 34 of less width than the slots 20 which, in use, is adapted to engage sides 28 of a first slot 20a.
The first and second horizontal parts 32,33 are connected together by a channel shaped part 35 which, in use, receives the edge of cut-out 30 of the side part 29.
The clip 31 further comprises a downwardly inclined inwardly extending fourth part 36 also of greaterwidth than slots 20, which is integral with a third part 37 which is of less width than the slots 20 and is adapted to engage a second slot 20b beneath slot 20a.
To adjust the shelf 25 into a particular position, four clips 31 are engaged with corresponding slots 20 in each of the rows 21 and 22 in each of the side walls 1 la and 1 1b of the frame 11, and the shelf 25 is engaged with the clips as shown in Figure 2.
Corresponding slots 20 are selected so that the shelf 25 will be level.
The clips 31 each form a rigid triangular brace to support the shelf and any articles placed thereon.
As the horizontal part 32 ofthe clip 31 is wider than the slot 20a, the following technique has to be adopted in order to engage the clip 31 in the slots 20a, 20b.
First, the clip 31 is inclined to enable the first horizontal part 32 to be received diagonally within the upper part of the slot 20a and the clip 31 is inserted into the slot 20a until the reduced width part 34 is adjacent the sides 28a of the slot 20a. The clip is then rotated to its normal position and thus the reduced width part 34 will engage the sides 28 of the slot 20a.
The clip 31 is then lowered, at the same time inserting the third part 37 into the slot 206.
The clip 31 will eventually be located in the position shown in Figure 2, i.e. the underside of the reduced width part 34 abutting the bottom 28b of the slot 20a.
The same technique needs to be adopted for each clip 31.
The shelf 25 is placed on the second horizontal parts ofthe clips 31 engaging the side parts 29 of the shelf and the 'U' shaped parts 35 of the clips 31.
It will be appreciated that the shelf 25 may be placed in any selected position, and that a plurality of shelves 25 may be assembled in the frame 11, in this manner.
The whole shelving system may, if desired, be placed on a base having wheels (not shown) so that it may be moved from-oneposition to another.
When it is desired to adjust the position of a shelf in the frame, the shelf is first lifted vertically upwards thereby disengaging the channel shaped part 35 and if the shelf from thie 'U' shaped parts 35 of the clips 31 the clips themselves may each be lifted vertically to the upper end of the slot 20a whilst disengaging the third partfrom thesecond slot 20b, and then withdrawing the clip 31 from the slot 20a.
The shelf may then be placed into any selected position as described hereinbefore.
Thus this shelving system proves a convenient and easy way of adjusting the position of shelves to accommodate different sized articles and there is no need to have access to both sides of the side walls 1 1a, 1 1b in order to withdraw or insert bolts to adjust the shelving. As the system described comprises two parts A, B, it will be appreciated that shelves either side of the panel 9 are each individually adjustable.
The front edges of the parts 12a and 12b and of the shelf 25 are all flush with the front edges of the side walls 1 la and 1 1b. Furthermore, the entire front edge of the shelf 25 is exposed between the side walls so that the side walls do not obstruct access to any part of the support surface 26 of the shelf.
