Abstract
A heating plate 1 for joining together parts 3, 4 formed from a thermoplastic material by heat sealing comprises one planar contact surface 6 and one contact surface 7 with an elevation or rib 2 thereon, by means of which a groove is obtained in the portion 5 of the part 4 heated against the surface 7. The groove serves to guide the part 3 to be joined thereto to its central point and also serves to collect molten material, so that a strong join is obtained. In cross-section, the elevation 2 may be triangular, as shown, or part-circular. The heating plate of the invention is of particular use in the joining of lids to accumulator cells and batteries and may comprise two parts (1a, 1b, Fig. 1) which form an open rectangle. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Heating plate for joining together parts of thermoplastic material
The present invention concerns a heating plate for use in joining together parts formed from a thermoplastic material by means of heat sealing. Heat sealing implies that the surfaces which are to be joined are fused by direct contact with a hot heating plate. The heat-sealing method is especially suitable for joining together thinwalled thermosplastic parts, for example, vessels and lids. In certain applications it can also be used for joining together tubular parts. A special area of application is the joining of vessels and lids to electrical accumulator cells and batteries, which are increasingly made of polyethylene and polypropylene.The advantages of the present invention are particularly apparent in an application of this kind, in which a lid with a welding surface of 2 to 5 mm in width is attached to a vessel wall with a thickness of about 1 to 3 mm.
Using heat sealing, heat is transferred from the heated plate to the plastic parts which are to be joined together. In this connection one can distinguish between a low temperature process and a high temperature process. This means in the case of polypropylene that with the low temperature process the temperature of the heating plate does not exceed 200 C, whereas it exceeds 200on with the high temperature process. In the case of polyethylene the boundary lies some ten or more degrees lower, and in the case of other thermoplastic materials this boundary must be adapted to their qualities. The low temperature process involves a relatively long contact time between the heating plate and the plastic material, and in the case of material with a wall thickness of several mm., the contact time will usually be at least 10 seconds.In order to prevent the plastic material from sticking to the heating plate, the heating plate is provided with a special outer layer, for example, of polytetrafluoroethylene. With the high temperature process, the contact time is usually under 5 seconds, provided the same conditions prevail. Because of the high tempera.
ture of the heating plate, the special coating of its surfaces is unnecessary, as any sticky material is burned off directly. With the high temperature process, melting or softening of the plastic material is obtained to a considerably lesser depth than with the low temperature process.
In connection with the joining together of a vessel and a lid, where the vessel walls have only a slight thickness (0.53 mm) in relation to its depth, difficulties may arise in adjusting the vessel's wall against the lid in the intended manner, along its entire length. This may be partly due to the fact that the vessel wall itself is not sufficiently straight and partly due to the fact that the wall changes its form and loses its rigidity because of the heating.
With the previously mentioned application to batteries and accumulator cells, it has been attempted to solve this problem by placing a number of guiding fins along the edges of the lid on which the welding against the vessel is to occur. The welding edges on the lid generally consist of elevations, 2 to 3 mm wide, from the level surface. Against these the edges of the battery walls are fixed, the walls generally having a thickness of 1 to 2 mm. As the guiding fins must be placed wholly outside the welding edges of the lid, only a rough control or guiding of the vessel wall is obtained by means of the fins. Between the guiding fins relatively great deviations may occur in the adjustment between the vessel and the lid.
Another problem is the risk of so-called cold welding, which arises when the parts to be joined together are compressed too strongly.
In this connection it may found that all of the fused or molten material is pressed against the sides and outside the area where the joining is to take place. Because of remnants of molten material and the softness in the underlying material, joining together of the parts is usually obtained in spite of this. The material, however, acquires poor qualities and endures only very slight mechanical stress.
We have now developed a heating plate and a method of using the heating plate, which overcomes the aforementioned problems and which provides a joint of the desired qualities.
Accordingly the present invention provides a heating plate for use in joining together parts of a thermoplastic material by means of heat sealing, whereby the surfaces that are to be joined are fused by direct contact with the heating plate, which heating plate has one level contact surface and one contact surface with an elevation thereon, by means of which a groove is obtained in the thermoplastic part heated against the surface.
The elevation preferably is of triangular cross-section, the triangle having a base which is greater than its height.
The present invention will be further described in detail below with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:~
Figure 1 shows a heating plate according to the invention;
Figure 2 shows a cross-section through the heating plate of Fig. 1 and parts a vessel and a lid which are to be joined together;
Figure 3 shows the parts of the vessel and lid after the union.
The heating plate illustrated in Fig. 1 consists of two parts, 1A and 1 B. Together these two parts form an open rectangle. On the upper side of the rectangle there is an elevation 2 of triangular cross-section. The eleva tion is placed in such a way on the heating plate that its central line coincides with the central line of the plastic part to be heated.
Fig. 2 shows a cross-section through the same heating plate and parts of a vessel (3) and a lid (4) which are to be joined together. The joining surface (5) of the lid is wider than the corresponding surface of the vessel, and in this case one therefore chooses to turn the joining surface of the lid against or towards the elevation 2 of the heating plate. A partial melting down of the lid surface occurs and, there is formed in it a notch or groove which serves to guide the vessel's wall toward the central point of the groove as well as to collect the molten material, so that a strong weld join is obtained. Fig. 3 shows the vessel and the lid parts after being joined together, the seam of join between the two parts is indicated by a dotted line.
The invention is not limited, of course, to the abovementioned specific embodiment.
The elevation on the heating plate, for example, may have a different cross-section, such as a segment of a circle or a triangle with a different angle. The heating plate of the invention can also be combined with a lid which is provided with guiding fins to correct greater deviations between the vessel and the lid. The surface of the heating plate, which in the above-mentioned example is level, may have notches or grooves with a cross-section corresponding to the elevations.
