Abstract
A neck (2) of the flask (1) has a lateral opening (3) with which a detachable suction-pipe connector is engaged. The connector comprises a first plastics tubular part (4) which is relatively short and which is inserted into the opening (3) from the inside of the flask (1). A second plastics tubular part (6) is screw engaged with the tubular part (4) externally of the flask (1). A sealing washer (7) seals around the opening (3) when the two parts (4) and (6) are secured together. This connector arrangement can be used with flasks having relatively narrow necks and the bores of the tubular parts (4) and (6) can be made relatively larger so that there is little impairing of the suction performance. The risk of injury is also lessened because of the construction of the connector and the material of construction of the tubular parts (4) and (6). <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Suction Flask
This invention relates to a suction flask, or bottle having a new kind of suction-pipe connector.
The flask is designed for use with a filter unit. It consists of a flat-bottomed vessel having a neck at its top end wherein the filter unit can be inserted with a gas-tight seal. On one side the neck has an opening which is connected to a vacuum pump by means of a hose or flexible tube.
In existing arrangements, a glass olive is fused, or welded to this opening. However, this has the disadvantage that the said glass olive is liable to fracture when the connecting hose is fitted, i.e.
pushed over, or removed, i.e. pulled off, the olive thus presenting an injury hazard for the operator.
In another known arrangement, a conically flared piece of glass tube is fused, or welded to the said opening and the connecting hose inserted into this short glass tube. The disadvantage of this arrangement resides in that the hose is held in place only by the partial vacuum inside the flask and has to be manually supported during flask evacuation whilst being liable to drop out as soon as air is admitted to the flask.
According to a third known arrangement, an olive, made of glass or plastic, is detachable and may also be provided with a gasket or like seal.
This olive is pushed into the suction flask opening (GE-PS 1 161 057). The drawback of this arrangement resides in the high degree of precision required with regard to the configuration of the opening, otherwise the joint will not be vacuum-tight and/or the olive will drop out. In one existing arrangement of this type, the olive is pushed through the opening from the inside of the flask and secured on the outside by a retaining nut. This arrangement has the following disadvantages: the olive, which must have a certain length cannot be inserted from the inside of small suction flasks with narrow necks, i.e. it cannot be used; also, the inner diameter of the olive is comparatively small which detracts from the suction perforniance.
It is an object of the present invention to obviate or mitigate at least some of the above disadvantages.
According to the present invention, there is provided a suction flask having a detachable suction pipe connector, comprising a pair of tubular parts which are adapted to be screwed together, one tubular part being inserted from the inside of the flask through a corresponding opening in the suction flask a shoulder being provided on said one part and engaging closely with the inside of the flask, and the other tubular part, which carries an olive, is screwed from the outside of the flask to said first tubular part.
The accompanying drawing is a sectional view through the neck of a suction flask according to one embodiment of the present invention.
Referring to the drawing the suction flask (1) has a neck (2) provided with a lateral opening (3) in which a suction-pipe connector is inserted. The suction-pipe connector includes two plastic tubes (4) and (6). The tube (4), which is the shorter of the two, is pushed through the opening (3) from the inside and has a shoulder (5) which engages with the inside of the neck (2). The tube (4) projects outwardly from the opening (3) and has an external screw threading on its outer end portion. The other tube (6) has a matching internal thread at one end whereby it is screwed onto the tube (4), whilst its opposite end is provided with an olive which may have a large inside diameter.A sealing washer (7) is provided on the tube (4) externally of the neck (2) by virtue of the threaded connection of the two tubes (4) and (6), the sealing washer (7) is compressed tension between the outside of the neck (2) around the opening (3) and the inner end face of the second tube (6) and thus provides an effective vacuum tight seal for the joint.
Claims
1. A suction flask having a detachable suctionpipe connector, comprising a pair of tubular parts which are adapted to be screwed together, one tubular part being inserted from the inside of the flask through a corresponding opening in the suction flask, a shoulder being provided on said one part and engaging closely with the inside of the flask, and the other tubular part, which carries an olive, is screwed from the outside of the flask to said first tubular part.
2. A suction flask according to claim 1, wherein a sealing washer is arranged between the two tubular parts at said opening.
3. A suction flask according to claim 1 or 2, wherein both tubular parts are made of a plastics material.
4. A suction flask substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
