Abstract

The combination has a chassis with two spaced wheeled axles, tubular sides members 3 of L-shape; and a back frame member 4 pivoted at 5 to each side member 3 and supportable by a hinged telescopic supporter 6 at each side. A lower seat 7 is formed by canvas between the sidemembers and back frame members, an upper seat 10 is foldably carried on the upper parts of the back support frames and itself supports a pivotable tray 12 having arms 11 clippable thereto. A brake 17 may be actuated to prevent movement of the wheels and a shopping bag accommodated rearwardly of the fabric seat. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Convertible push chair and high chair combination This invention relates to a convertible push chair and high chair combination, that is a childs push chair which can be readilly converted into a high chair.
It is well known that young children require a number of specialist items such as high chairs, and pushchairs, which involve a substantial financial outlay and are then only used for a short period of two or three years at most in the case of an only child. For this reason it is desirable to make as much use as possible of multi purpose articles whereby outlay can be reduced.
It is thus an object of the invention to combine a childs high chair with a wheeled push chair so that neither impairs the function of the other.
In accordance with the invention, a convertible pushchair and highchair combination comprises a wheel-base or chassis having wheels for running the pushchair, a pushchair seat part and handles connected to the pushchair chassis by a back support frame, the back support frame carrying a foldable seat foldable between a collapsed position again or within the back support frame, and an errected position wherein the seat extends spaced above the push chair seat part.
The push chair/high chair combination may be completely collapsible, and a brake foot associated with one pair of wheels is prefera bly provided to prevent the combination moving on the wheels when in use as a high chair.
The foldable seat is preferably provided with retaining means to hold it in the folded position, such as co-operative press-studs, catches, or hook-and-pile fabric tapes of the "Velcro" (Registered Trade Mark) type. The seat may have an associated tray which errects to lie in a plane above the seat, and folds into the seat.
A preferred embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, which is a side elevation of a combination push chair/high chair erected for use as a high chair.
In the drawing, a combination push chair/ high chair, comprises a chassis of tubular frame construction, having two spaced apart paraliel axis on which are mounted front wheels 1 and rear wheels 2. The chassis also has tubular side members 3 which are of Lshape or shaped as an off-centre arch. A back frame member 4 is pivoted at 5 on each side member 3 and when errect is supported by a telescopic bracing strut 6, at each side, which locks in position its retracted state, thereby preventing collapsing of the back-frame 4.
A lower seat 7 is formed by canvas 8 secured about the side members 3 and back frame members 4 to provide a back rest, a seat, and sides.
Above the lower seat 7 is provided an upper seat part 10 of tubular frame construction upholstered with canvas and hinged between the back support frames 4 about half way up. The upper seat 9 also has sockets for receiving the ends of pivotal arms 11 supporting the forward part of a tray 12, supported thereabove by collapsible side tapes 1 3 so that the tray can be laid flat in the plane of the seat part 10 when this is collapsed.
The seat 10 is upholstered at the sides and back with canvas 9 similarly to lower seat 7 with a back support between the frames 4, the seat 10 and sides.
Securing means, in the form of a tape 14 of one part of a hook and pile fabric fastener is provided on the upper part of the back of the upperseat, for engagement with the complementary part of the fabric fastener on the underside of the seat 9, when the seat is folded up to lie between the back support frames 4.
The back support frame is divided into two sections and they are connected by hinges at articulation. The hinge is covered by a sleeve when the combination is in use to support the structure and maintain rigidity. To fold the combination away the sleeve is raised so as to expose the hinge. The top section can then fold down onto the telescopic bracing strut to completely coilapse the combination the telescopic bracing strut is unlocked and is then able to extend forward articulating about as at the same time the back frame members move forward about articulation The back support frames 4a are bent back and formed at the top to form a pushing handle 16.
A brake foot 1 7 is provided on association with the rear wheels 2, which can be rotated between the shown "on" position where it raises the rear wheels 2 from the ground for keeping the combination unmovable when being used as a high chair, and an "off" portion shown in dotted lines where the combination is to be used as a push chair.
When in use as a push chair, the upper seat 10 is folded up by articulation about pivot 1 5 and secured by the tape 14, while in use as a high chair the upper seat 10 is folded down and the tray 1 2 errected by articulation about rivets in tape 1 3 and 10 swivelling struts 1 into plastic socket clips. Both seats 7 and 10 preferably have the usual detents for fastening of safety hardness.
Provision may be made for a collapsible shopping bag or carrier. This may be supported on the side members 3 and kept in portion by a single pin extending across the back of the push chair at 15, instead of two shorter pins The combination high chair and push chair described can function equally well as a high chair and push chair, and saves on outlay particularly for small families by reducing the number of items of specialised equipment which need to be obtained.
