Abstract

An electric alarm bell has a backing plate (10) with open- topped pockets (18) into which lugs (26) on an internal channel housing (12) connected to a gong (11) engage to secure the channel housing (12) to the backing plate (10). The internal channel housing (12) carries the bell striker mechanism (13) and a three-contact (25) electrical connection means which engages with a three-contact (17) electrical connection means on the backing plate (10). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Electric alarm bells This invention relates to electric alarm bells for use as an audible signal or as part of a fire alarm or security system.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided an electric alarm bell comprising a gong mounting an electrically-operable striker mechanism having first electrical connection means with at least three contacts adapted to make circuit with a second electrical connection means also having at least three contacts and which is connectable to an electricity supply.
Preferably the second electrical connection means is carried by a mounting portion for supporting the gong and which is attachable to a wall or other support, the arrangement being such that when the gong is fitted on to the mounting portion the electrical connection means interengage with one another. The electrical connection means may interengage by pin and socket contacts.
According to a second aspect of the invention, there is provided an electrical alarm bell comprising a mounting plate attachable to a wall or other support, a gong housing a striker mechanism, and means for releasably connecting the gong and striker mechanism to the mounting plate, the connecting means comprising complementary slidably interengaging formations on the gong and the mounting plate.
Preferably the mounting plate has at least two laterally-spaced, open-topped pockets into which can be slidably engaged complementary lugs carried by the gong.
Preferably, the gong has an internal channel housing within which first electrical connection means and the striker mechanism are supported, the channel housing mounting the lugs which are engageable in the open-topped pockets formed in the mounting plate.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is an exploded perspective view of an electric alarm bell according to the present invention; Figure 2 is a perspective view of the contact arrangement of the alarm bell; and Figures 3 and 4 are perspective views from opposite sides of the internal channel housing of the gong.
The alarm bell comprises a mounting plate 10 and a gong 11 within which is mounted a channel housing 1 2 containing the bell striker mechanism 1 3 and one part 14 of the bell electrical connection, the other and complementary part 1 5 of which is carried by the plate 10.
The mounting plate 10 is provided with a series of screw holes 1 6 to allow for its securement at different locations. It mounts, as aforesaid, the electrical connection part 1 5 having three contacts 1 7 of the socket type.
The plate 10 is stamped out to form four tapered pockets 1 8 open at the top and to one side.
One of the bottom pockets 1 8 has formed adjacent thereto a flange 1 9 in which is supported a capture screw 20.
In use, the mounting plate 10 is usually screwed onto a wall, the electrical wiring (not shown) of the alarm system passing through a hole 21 in the mounting plate 10 and being screwed to electrical contacts 1 7.
The gong 11 has the internal channel housing 12 secured therein by a central screw 22.
Within the channel housing 1 2 is mounted the striker mechanism 1 3 whereof the solenoid coil 23 is electrically connected as indicated at 24 to the electrical connection part 14 having three contacts 25 of the pin type.
The internal channel housing 1 2 has four lateral lugs 26 each for releasable engagement in one of the pockets 1 8 of the mounting plate 1 0. The lug 26 corresponding to the pocket 1 8 adjacent the flange 1 9 has a corresponding flange 27 with a tapped hole 28 to receive the screw 20.
To fit the gong 11 on its mounting plate 10 it is only necessary to locate it with the lugs 26 above the pockets 1 8 and then slide it downwards to engage the lugs 26 in the pockets 18.
This action also interengages the pin contacts 25 into the socket contacts 1 7 so that the striker mechanism is now in circuit.
The capture screw 20 is now screwed into the tapped hole 28 in the flange 27 on the channel housing 1 2 of the gong 11 releasably to retain the gong 11 on its plate 1 0.
The coil 23 of the alarm bell has, as a result of the electrical connection 14, 1 5 selective voltage tapping, say six, twelve and twenty four voltage tappings thus permitting different sound characteristics to be achieved.
The coil 23 is also formed with cut outs to accommodate printed circuitry.
The gong 11 is eccentrically mounted with respect to internal channel housing 1 2 so that it can be turned to vary its position relative to the striker mechanism 1 3 to vary the sound characteristics of the bell.
The gong 11 and its associated components can be secured directly, say to a wall or box (mounting plate 10 omitted) through the intermediary of the internal channel housing 1 2 which is provided with tapped holes 29 in side lugs 30 for this purpose. In this case the electrical wiring of the supply would have the electrical connection part 1 5 secured directly thereto for engagement with the gong connection part 1 4 and the channel housing 1 2 would be mounted first and the gong 11 secured thereto thereafter.
