Description

SPECIFICATION Adapter connection to a plastics cannula The invention relates to an adapter connected to a cannula, comprising a tubular or conical section for sealingly connecting to injection syringes and/or flexible tubes having connecting cones, and a throughpassage axially adjoining said section.
Plastics cannulae and vein catheters are employed medically for feeding blood or infusion solutions into the vascular system of patients. The plastics cannula or possibly a short catheter is, with the aid of a sharp metal cannula disposed therein, pierced through the skin as well as the tissue and introduced into a blood vessel. When the metal cannula is subsequently withdrawn, a long catheter can be introduced into the vascular system by means of the applied plastics cannula. If a catheter is introduced into the plastics cannula, the cannula can be pulled out of the blood vessel and the tissue so that only the catheter will then lead into the body of the patient.
The plastics cannula is usually connected to an adapter of the aforementioned kind so that, when the catheter which is also provided with an adapter is inserted therein, two intertelescoped conical plug connections are present which have to be fixed to the body of the patient and could form such a long lever arm that there is a danger of the Connection becoming loose.
It is therefore the problem of the present invention to provide a combination of a catheter and an adapter of the aforementioned kind connected to a plastics cannula, which combination can be secured to the body of the patient more simply, more safely and with greater accessibility.
According to the invention, this problem is solved in that the inside of the wall bounding the throughpassage is provided with securing means cooperating with complementary securing means provided on the end piece of the catheter pushed into the adapter. In the combination according to the invention of a catheter and an adapter connected to a plastics cannula, the end of the catheter is anchored in the adapter of the plastics cannula so that the adapter at the same time forms the adapter or connecting cone for the introduced catheter. The axial length of the equipment to be attached to the body of the patient does therefore not exceed the axial length of the adapter of the plastics cannula, whereby the adapter becomes simpler, more accessible and more secure.
Desirably, the wall bounding the throughpassage contains a circumferential radial groove into which the radially outwardly directed bead-like rim of the end piece of the catheter or a bushing connected thereto can be pressed for engagement.
The groove may be arranged in the upper zone of a sleeve inserted in the throughpassage. Desirably, the outside of the sleeve is also provided with a radial circumferential projection which engages in a complementary groove in the throughpassage.
In a further form of the invention, a mandrin inserted in the catheter has a knob-like end piece connected to the mandrin by a ram-like intermediate member, the lower end of the intermediate member having a diameter corresponding to that of the end piece of the catheter or of the bushing. By way of the ram-like intermediate member, simple pressure on the knob-like end piece will then press the terminal coupling member of the catheter into engagement with the groove of the adapter.
The cross-section of the catheter and of the throughpassage may be adapted to each other so that the catheter sealingly abuts the inner face of the wall of the throughpassage or of the plastics cannula. The bushing or the end piece of the catheter may also conically diverge towards their end and the adapter can be provided with a complementary conical portion in which the bushing or the end piece is sealingly held in the engaged position. The adapter is readily and reliably held to the body of the patient if it is provided with flexible lateral fins.
- When performing a puncture with a plastics cannula of the aforementioned kind, it was hitherto hardly possible to prevent blood from escaping from the adapter in the form of the connecting cone when the metal needle was pulled out of the plastics cannula. In known plastics cannulae of the aforementioned kind, there was also the particular danger that the infusion tube became separated from the connecting cone of the vein catheter without being noticed. In the case of a subclavian catheter for a seated patient this can lead to an air embolism whereas in a peripherally disposed catheter blood would escape from it continuously or block same through coagulation.
A development of the invention therefore provides for an elastomeric valve plate having at least one central slot to be held in a radial emplacement in the zone between the section for making the connection and the throughpassage. The end piece of the catheter or the bushing forming the end piece can then be pressed into engagement with the circumferential groove of the throughpassage beneath the valve plate so that the valve plate brings about a hermetic seal when the valve plate is not flexed open.
If the valve plate is not opened by the cone of a syringe or a flexible tube provided with a connecting cone, a further embodiment of the invention provides that a member having a central aperture is so mounted for limited longitudinal displacement in the conical inlet passage that its front is disposed in front of the planarvalve plate in its retracted position and at least partially passes therethrough in its projected position to open the slot. If a connecting cone, for example of an infusion tube, is pushed into the connecting nipple of the adapter that is provided with an internal cone, it will advance the longitudinally displaceable member towards the valve plate so that the slot opens and will hold the slot in this position. If the connecting cone of the infusion tube is pulled out or drops off unintentionally, the elastically deformable valve plate will push the member back, whereby the slot is sealed shut.
The valve plate of the adapter will therefore automatically close the vascular catheter which therefore does not have to equipped with any additional selfsealing valve.
Further advantageous embodiments of the inven tion have been described in more detail in the sub

Claims (13)

sidiary claims. The present invention provides a combination of a vascular catheter with an adapter provided with a plastics cannula, wherein the plastics cannula serves for the sterile introduction of the catheter into the vascular system after removal of the injection needle that served for the introduction, and wherein the attachment itself is employed as an adapter for connecting the catheter to an infusion conduit. One example of the invention will now be described in more detail with reference to the drawing in which the single figure is an enlarged longitudinal section through the adapter which comprises a valve plate and an axially displaceable member for opening same. The adapter 1 is of plastics material and has on its inlet side an internal cone 2 which serves sealingly to hold an inserted connecting cone of a flexible infusion tube. On its outlet side, the adapter 1 is provided with a cylindrical cannula 3 of which the diameter is adapted to a metal cannula or to the catheter 4. Between the internal cone 2 and the constant lumen of the cannula 3 the adapter 1 has a conical cavity 5 in which a conical sleeve 6 of plastics materia I is inserted. The upper region of the cavity 5 has a circumferential annular recess 7 in which the complementary upper circumferential rim 8 of the sleeve 6 6is located. In the region of the rim 8, the sleeve 6 contains an internal radially extending circumferential groove 9. Engaged in this groove 9 there is the outer bead-like rim 10 of a conical bushing 11 of plastics material, which bushing forms the end portion of the catheter 4 which is pushed thereon and connected thereto. The outside of the conical sleeve 6 sealingly abuts the wall of the conical cavity 5 of the adapter 1. The interior of the sleeve 6 is also conical so that the externally conical bushing 11 will likewise be sealingly held in the sleeve 6. The mandrin 12 is inserted in the catheter 4 and carries a knob-like end piece 13 at its upper end. The knob-like end piece 13 is extended by a ram-like shank 14 of which the diameter so corresponds to the upper diameter of the bushing 11 thatthe latter is pushed to engage in the sleeve 6 under the pressure exerted on the knob 13 through the ram 14. The adapter 1 is provided internally with a further circumferential groove 15 which serves to receive a valve plate 16 of elastic material provided with a central slot which does not pass completely through the plate. The construction of the valve plate 16 is described in more detail in DE-OS 28 17 102. The internal cone 2 contains two or more axially extending guide grooves 17 engaged by complementary keys 18 of a member 19 which is displaceable within limits. The cylindrical portion of the member 19 may also be guided in a corresponding cylindrical bore. The member 19 is provided with a central bore 20, is straight at the rear and converges frustoconically at its front end. This member 19 which opens the valve plate 16 when the connecting cone is inserted is described in more detail in DE-OS 28 17 102. It is illustrated in its projected position in which the slot of the valve plate 16 is splayed open. If the member 19 is retracted by the valve plate 16 after the connecting cone of the infusion tube has been withdrawn, not only the adapter 1 but also the cathe ter 4 will be sealed. CLAIMS
