Abstract
In a hypodermic syringe (1) comprising a tube (2) having an apertured front wall (3) and a cap (9), a piston (6) is carried by a piston rod (7) which passes through the cap (9) and is smaller than the tube (2) so as not to touch the inside of the tube. The cap (9) has an aperture which corresponds in shape to the cross- section of the rod (7) (e.g. cruciform). <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Hypodermic Syringe
The invention relates to a hypodermic syringe comprising a cylinder on the centrally apertured front wall of which the needle is placed, and a piston which is guided for axial displacement in the cylinder and of which the free end of the piston rod projecting beyond the rear end of the cylinder carries a pressure plate.
In known hypodermic syringes of this kind, the piston rod is of cruciform cross-section and guided in the cylinder by the webs of this crosssection being supported on the inside of the cylinder wall. It is practically impossible for the person preparing an injection to avoid touching the webs of the piston rod when the latter is retracted. Consequently, the webs may contaminate the inside of the cylinder wall when they touch the wall during an injection or when the piston rod is depressed.
The invention therefore aims to provide a hypodermic syringe in which a danger of contaminating the syringe cylinder by the piston rod is avoided.
According to the invention, this aim is achieved in a hypodermic syringe of the aforementioned kind in that the largest diameter of the piston rod is smaller than the inner diameter of the cylinder and the piston rod passes through a cap which is placed on the rear end of the cylinder and is provided with an aperture corresponding in shape to the cross-section of the piston rod. In the hypodermic syringe according to the invention, the piston rod is guided on the one hand by the piston of the syringe and on the other hand by the cap that is placed on the cylinder or by a closure member at the end, so that the piston rod cannot touch the inside of the cylinder wall even if it has a cruciform cross-section for the purpose of rigidity.Since the piston rod can no longer come into contact with the inside of the cylinder wall, no harm is done if the person preparing an injection happens to touch the piston rod when retracting same.
As in the case of known hypodermic syringes, the syringe according to the invention may be made from extruded plastics components. The cap for guiding the piston rod is placed on the rear end of the cylinder and connected thereto in known manner, for example by adhesion. The cap is desirably provided with lateral fins which, whilst the syringe is being prepared, can be applied to the index and middle fingers and serve as counterbearings for the pressure exerted on the piston rod.
One example of the invention will now be described in more detail with reference to the drawing, wherein:~
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the hypodermic syringe;
Fig. 2 is a section through the syringe taken on the line Il-Il in Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the cap closing the end of the syringe cylinder.
The hypodermic syringe 1 consists of a plastics cylinder 2 closed by a front wall which is provided with a through passage. The throughpassage is connected to the needle 5 by a coupling member 4.
A piston 6 provided with a rubber sealing ring is axially displaceable in the cylinder 1. The piston 6 is secured to the front end of a piston rod 7 which is cruciform in cross-section. The piston rod 7 passes through the cruciform slot 8 which serves to guide same and is centrally disposed in the cap 9 by which the cylinder 2 is closed at the end. The cap 9 is provided with an annular rim 10 secured to the outside of the cylinder 2. The cap 9 is also provided with lateral fins 1 1 which serve as counterbearings for the pressure exerted on the piston rod 7 during an injection. The end of the piston rod 7 carries a pressure plate 12 which can be connected to the piston rod 7 as soon as the latter has been passed through the cruciform slot 8 in the cap 9.
