Abstract

A fireplace or stove in which a fire grate (4) is located in a cabinet (3), with a water jacket (11) positioned above the grate (4), and ducting (8) for heating air positioned behind the grate. A pathway (14) is defined between the rear of the water jacket (11) and the air ducting (8) to allow products of combustion to heat the water jacket (11) and the air ducting (8) independently whereby the effect of the water jacket on the heating of air in the ducting (8) is minimized. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Heating Appliances This invention relates to heating appliances such as domestic stoves and fireplaces of the kind which may be employed for so-called convection heating of air as well as for the heating of a water jacket.
Heating appliances of this kind have incorporated passages through which air may pass beneath the zone of a fire grate, up behind the grate, and then exhaust in a heated condition back into the room being served by the appliance, the exhausting of heated air from the appliance taking place at a locality above the grate.
Such heating appliances have been formed as a unit providing a suitable metal cabinet wherein the various air passages are located. In recent times a water jacket has been fitted into the cabinet above the zone of the grate to take advantage of direct heat rays from the grate to heat water for domestic purposes.
However, it has been found that the provision of a water jacket within the cabinet in previously proposed heating appliances results in the air passing out of the cabinet for convection heating purposes, at a lower temperature than in the absence of such a jacket.
An object of the present invention is the provision of a heating appliance incorporating a water jacket, in which the above-mentioned disadvantage is at least minimized.
According to the present invention there is provided a heating appliance including a cabinet for the accommodation of a fire grate, ducting positioned to be heated by a fire grate in the cabinet for carrying air from an inlet to a higher outlet where warmed air may escape, and a water jacket mounted in the cabinet so as to be heated by a fire grate therein, wherein the water jacket is positioned in spaced relationship to the ducting so as to be heated independently of the ducting.
Preferably the ducting is also located in the cabinet although in some embodiments of the invention part of the ducting may be separate from the cabinet.
A further preferred feature of the invention is that the water jacket and the wall of the ducting define a pathway for the products of combustion to pass from a fire in the grate upwardly between the jacket and the ducting to a flue in the cabinet.
The minimum spacing of the jacket and the wall is preferably within the range 1 5 to 25 millimetres.
A further feature of the preferred forms of the invention is the provision of a water jacket which slopes upwardly over the grate.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a diagrammatic sectional side view of a fireplace in accordance with the invention on the line A-A of Figure 2, and Figure 2 is a front elevation of the fireplace.
Referring to the drawings, a heating appliance in the form of a fireplace includes a metal cabinet 3 open at the front to define a compartment for the accommodation of a firegrate 4. Beneath the floor 5 of the grate zone there is a passage or duct 6 through which convection air may pass from an inlet in the direction of arrows 7 towards back air passage or duct 8 from which the convection air rises to pass along upper passage or duct 9 to exhaust at a higher outlet as shown by arrows 10.
Within the compartment for the grate 4 there is a water jacket 11 which is secured to the side walls 12 of the cabinet. It will be seen that the jacket is spaced from the front wall 13 of the back air passage or duct 8 to define a pathway 14 having parallel walls for the products of combustion to pass in the direction of arrows 1 5 towards the flue 1 6.
Water jacket 11 is in the form of a flat box having parallel front and rear walls, and slopes upwardly and forwardly over the grate 4 and receives direct heating from the fire in the grate while also having the products of combustion flowing over the front surface thereof along the path defined by arrows 1 7. The products of combustion flowing in the directions of arrows 1 5 and 1 7 unite in the flue 16 as illustrated. In the water jacket 11 shown in the drawings, a central divider 1 8 is used to channel water proceeding in the direction of arrows 1 9 from inlet 20 to outlet 21 and in some circumstances it may be useful to incorporate standard heating tubes 22.Inlet 20 and outlet 21 are connected to the supply pipes of a domestic hot water system such as central heating radiators or a hot water storage tank or both.
In most circumstances it will be useful to provide a damper 23 pivotally secured to the cabinet structure through a hinge or other arrangement 24 and operable by a lever 25 or the like. The purpose of this damper will be to adjust the spacing in the gap 26 through which the products of combustion together with air may pass towards the flue 16.
Ideally the minimum spacing of the water jacket 11 from the wall 13 of the duct 8 to define the pathway 14 should be in the range of 1 5 to 25 millimetres in order to have about 60% of the products of combustion proceeding towards the flue 16 via the pathway 14.
By providing the pathway 14 the chances of the temperature of the circulating convection air passing through passages 6, 8 and 9 being reduced by the presence of water jacket 11 are greatly minimized, since the water jacket and the passages are heated substantially independently.
Many more examples of the invention exist, each differing from the other in matters of detail only.
The principal application of the invention lies in open heating appliances as disclosed in the above embodiment of the invention, but the invention is also applicable to stoves and the like having closed or closable cabinets.
