Description
SPECIFICATION
Device for supplying one or more services
This invention relates to a device for supplying one or more services.
The apparatus required, for operating on or treating patients, needs an electrical power supply, supplies of pressurised gases, such as oxygen and anaesthetic gases, and also a vacuum, i.e. a duct maintained at a subatmospheric pressure, all of which must be available close to the patient. In order to keep the floor as free as possible from apparatuses and the lines and tubes for these supplies, these supplies are fed by way of columns hanging from the ceiling.
A known overhead supply device (disclosed in German utility model 76 27 083) comprises a support tube anchored in the ceiling, having several support arms for electromedical apparatuses, which require electrical lines and gas supply lines, capable of being coupled to the lower end of the device. For this purpose, it has a junction box having several connections to which the support arms can be connected in a selective, independent and detachable manner. They are connected by way of articulation pieces with pivot bearings, which define hollow conduits for the electrical lines and gas supply lines respectively to pass through. The support arms are adjustable in respect of height and have a field rotation greater than 180 . The narrow field df rotation of only approximately 180 is disadvantageous. In order to increase this to 360 , there must be at least two pivoted arms.
An overhead supply arm is known which is suspended from the ceiling and has in a power supply box at its lower end plug couplings for the gases and electrical sockets which are connected. The overhead arm is suspended by way of a Cardan joint on a mounting plate anchored to the ceiling. The
Cardan joint allows the power supply box to move in a spherical surface. There is the disadvantage that it is not possible to fix the power supply box in a desired position in order to maintain the connection couplings and sockets for connection at the most advantageous location (DRAG ER-leaflet/directions for use No. 6381.4 "Overhead pendulum').
According to the present invention there is provided a device for supplying one or more service, the device comprising: an arm; a coupling unit at one end region of the arm, which coupling unit includes a coupling member for the or each service to be supplied through the arm; a supply line for the or each service extending the length of the arm to the or the respective coupling member; a mounting at the other end region of the arm, to which mounting the arm is pivotally connected by a universal joint in such a manner as to enable the said one end region of the arm to be moved over a part-spherical surface centred on the mounting; and a releasable locking means capable of locking the arm relative to the mounting.
Preferably the one or more supply line is capable of conveying one or more of:a gas at a superatmospheric pressure; a gas at a subatmospheric pressure; a liquid; and electricity.
Preferably the universal joint by which the other end region of the arm is pivotally connected to the mounting is a ball and socket joint.
The ball and socket joint can comprise a ball through which the other end region of the arm passes, and first and second mounting members of the mounting each of which mounting members has a circular opening, of small diameter than the ball, in which the ball is partially located; and the releasable locking means, in the absence of any releasing force, locks the arm to the mounting by urging the first and second members towards one another.
The second member preferably comprises a locking plate.
Conveniently the release of the locking means is capable of being effected by actuation of a switch in the coupling unit. Preferably the switch is incorporated in a handle and the locking means normally locks the arm relative to the mounting, but when the handle is gripped by a user the switch actuates the release of the locking means thereby permitting the arm to pivot with respect to the mounting.
The locking means can include a pneumatic cylinder or an electromagnetic actuator for releasing the locking means.
Preferably the locking means is connected between the first and second mounting members on one side of the ball, and the first mounting member is pivotably connected to the second mounting member on an opposite side of the ball. Conveniently the locking means includes resilient biasing means urging the first and second mounting members together to lock the arm relative to the mounting, in the absence of a force opposing the action of the resilient biasing means.
Peferably the arm is capable of rotating about its own axis relative to the mounting.
The device can include a strap connecting the other end region of the arm to the mounting to prevent excess rotation of the arm about its own axis relative to the mounting.
The arm can comprise two or more telescopically engaging members.
The or each coupling member can comprise a plug or socket.
The mounting can be secured to a ceiling of a room to suspend the arm from the ceiling.
For a better understanding of the present invention and to show more clearly how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawing which shows, in partial section, a device for supplying one or more services.
An arm 1 is provided at its lower end with a coupling unit 2, which has coupling members 3 for pressurised gases at a superatmospheric pressure and a vacuum, i.e. a gas at a subatmospheric pressure, and coupling members 4 for one or more electrical supplies. The coupling members 3 comprise plugs and the coupling members 4 comprise sockets, although the coupling members 3 and 4 could alternatively comprise sockets and plugs respectively. The arm 1 is rotatably connected by a hollow ball and socket joint 5 to a mounting 7 secured to a ceiling 6 so that the arm 1 is suspended from the ceiling 6. Distance pins 21 provide a gap between the ceiling 6 and a false suspended ceiling 20.
The ball and socket joint 5 has a first or support member 22, a second member or locking plate 8 and a ball 24. The first and second members 22 and 8, are constituted by plates each of which has a circular opening having a diameter less than the diameter of the ball 24. The upper end of the arm 1 passes through the ball 24, and the ball 24, and hence the arm 1, are supported by the first member 22. The first member 22 is secured to the distance pins 21. The right hand side of the locking plate 8 is connected to the first member 22 by a pivot link 9, whilst the left hand side of the locking plate 8 is connected to the first member 22 by a spring 10 and a pneumatic actuator 11, which comprises a piston and a cylinder. The coupling unit 2 includes a switch 1 2 for actuating the pneumatic actuator 11. A cover 23 encloses the mounting 7.
A dividing wall 1 3 extends along the arm 1 and separates its interior into two conduits 1 4 and 1 5 for supply lines 1 6 for the gases and fluids and supply lines 1 7 for the electrical supplies respectively. The dividing wall 1 3 thus separates the electrical supplies from the fluid supplies which is required by some reguations relating to safety and the prevention of explosions.
A rotationg-limiting strap 1 8 connects the upper end of the arm 1 to the mounting 7.
The strap 1 8 prevents the arm 1 from rotating too far around its own axis.
In use, when the pneumatic actuator is inoperative, the spring 10 urges the first and second members 22 and 8 together to lock the arm 1 relative to the mounting 7. When the pneumatic actuator 11 is actuated by the switch 1 2 it opposes the action of the spring 10 to release the arm 1. The coupling unit 2 on the end of the arm 1 can then be freely moved in a spherical surface centred on the mounting 7. Once the coupling unit 2 has been moved to a desired position, the switch 1 2 is released, whereupon the pneumatic actuator 11 is rendered inoperative and the spring 10 locks the arm 1 relative to the mounting 7.
Although a one-piece arm is shown, the arm 1 could comprise two or more telescopically engaging tubes so that the length of the arm 1 can be varied. Furthermore, a second releasable locking means could be provided for locking those tubes together and could be controlled by the switch 1 2.
