Abstract

A longitudinally-slotted tubular fastener socket for securing in a hole in a wall etc. has a screw- thread 11, the crest of which has a diameter greater than the normal diameter of the remainder of the socket. It can be inserted by first forcing it, e.g. by hammering, into the hole until at least one turn of thread 11 has entered, and then rotating it until it reaches the end of the hole. In a modification, the screw-thread formation is forced radially outwards into the wall of the hole by, moving axially an expansion member 15a inside the socket. The screw thread may be formed by stamping. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A hooking or attachment device for fixing into a wall or surface The present invention relates to a hooking or attachment device, for fixing in a hole in a wall or into a surface such as, for example, a ceiling.
Whereas the normal hooking or attachment devices at present known posses a certain capacity to expand at the sides due to the fact that they are apertured from their extremity designed for insertion into the hole over their entire length or a substantial portion of it, and hence have a certain natural tendency to open when compressed, this being the case when they are forced into a hole; this natural expansion occurs over the entire length of the device and not at particular points, so that this does not generally suffice to hold these devices in the case of a friable wall of the concrete type or e.g. conglomerate cinder blocks and/or conglomerate panels or compressed materials which at present constitute the majority of walls inside buildings, and in particular when these devices are to be placed in an approximately vertical position with the bottom uppermost in a ceiling and are exposed to very powerful traction.
The device in accordance with the present invention eliminates these draw-backs in that there is provided a hooking or attachment device which, over a portion of its length and when inserted into a hole, will, preferably in a plurality of lines or successive portions of lines, become incrusted in the wall of the hole.
According to the invention, there is provided a hooking or attachment device, for fixing in a wall or into a surface such as, for example, a ceiling, of the tubular kind having, over its entire length or over a substantial portion of its length, from an extremity thereof for insertion into a wall or surface, to or near to its other extremity, a longitudinal aperture, characterised in that it has, on its part for insertion into the wall or surface, in a plurality of places or over the entire existing circumference of the device, the impression or formation of a screw-thread, the high parts or fillet or fillets of which lie, or are displaceable to lie, in a circle having a diameter larger than the normal outside diameter of the remainder of the device, in such a way that, when the device has been forced, partly by pressure or driving, into the hole, it is possible to continue forcing it in by rotating in the direction of the screw-thread, the high parts or fillet or fillets of the screw-thread resisting the withdrawal of the device from the hole by traction.
For preference, the screw-thread formation is provided over the entire existing contour of the device and has more than one turn. In a possible variant embodiment, in order to augment further, if necessary, the insertion of the screw-thread formation into the wall of the hole, the device can include means which will increase the ability of the said formation to expand laterally, however, to do this, the inner sides of the low portions of the screwthread formation normally lie in a circle having a diameter less than that of the inside diameter of the device.
Also, according to the invention there is provided a hooking or attachment device for fixing in a hole in a wall or in a surface such as, for example, a ceiling, said device comprising a tubular part which is for insertion into the hole in the wall or surface and has therein a longitudinal aperture extending from the insertion end of said tubular part, characterised in that said tubular part has thereon the formation of a screw-thread, a higher part or parts of which is or are forcibly engageable into a side wall of the hole by rotation of the tubular part in a screwing-in direction, or by an expansion action forcing the said higher part or parts radially outwards.
In the accompanying drawings, which show, by way of example, in a non-limitative manner, a plurality of embodiments constructed in accordance with the invention: Figure 1 is a side view of a device, constructed in accordance with the invention, in position; Figure 2 is a view of the same device as in Fig. 1 but from a direction at 90 to the viewing direction in respect of Fig. 1;.
Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line l-l, Fig. 2; Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line ll-ll, Fig. 2; Figure 5 is a view of another embodiment constructed in accordance with the invention and provided with additional lateral expansion means, this not being as yet active; Figure 6 is a view of the same device as in Fig. 5 but with the expansion means active; Figure 7 is a view of the said expansion means shown in Figs. 5 and 6; Figure 8 is a sectional view of an embodiment with expansion means inactive; and Figure 9 is a sectional view of the embodiment shown in Fig. 8, but with expansion means active.
Referring to Figs. 1 to 4 of the drawings, there is shown therein a hooking or attachment device 1 which is tubular in shape and is inserted into a hole in a wall 2, and which has a longitudinal slot 3 extending over the entire length of the device as well as various holes 4 and cut-outs 5 which will form asperities designed to make it easier for the device to hook or catch in the wall of the hole. In the extreme outer part 6 of the device there is, for example, a double cut-out 7 into which it is possible to insert an attachment (not illustrated). The shown arrangement of this extreme outer part 6 is by way of example; indeed, said extremity can be arranged in all the usual known ways or in any other suitable way.The other end part 8 of the device 1 is formed for insertion into the wall and is, for preference, conical, that is to say, tapering, so as to make it easier for the device to be inserted. Starting from this extremity 8 are, immediately adjacent or following, an essentially straight part 9 (as illustrated) arranged in a known manner, another part 10 also formed for insertion into the hole of a wall, and in which is formed or impressed, generally by stamping, a screw 11, the high parts (or fillet) 1 2 of which lie in a circle having a diameter greater than the normal diameter of the remainder of the device towards either extremity (Figs. 3 and 4) whilst the low parts 1 3 of said thread 11 are able to have the same diameter as that of the normal circle of the remainder of the device (or even a smaller diameter, which will apply in the case of the embodiment covered by Figs. 5 and 6). There may be a complete formation of a screw-thread 11 (as illustrated), that is to say, a formation extending over the whole of the circumference of the device, or the thread may extend only partially over the circumference. The number of turns of this screw-thread may also vary, for example, according to whether the dimensions of the device are large or small. However, the device is, for preference, to be used in the following manner: first force it, by applying pressure e.g. with a hammer, into the hole in the wall 2 until at least one turn of the screw-thread 11 has entered the hole in the wall 2, then continue forcing in by rotating in a screw-like manner to the bottom of the hole, executing at least one full rotation, but preferably a plurality, with the screwthread formation. High parts 1 2 of the screwthread 11 in the device form at the edge of the slot 3 indentations 1 2a which will facilitate, at one side, the insertion by rotating, given the need to be one direction of rotation.
The indentations 1 2a will bite into the side wall of the hole in the wall 2.
For preference, the fillet 1 2 of the screwthread 11 has several holes 14 to enable the compression of the part 10 of the device having the screw-thread 11 to be increased, and in such a way as not to prevent the device being forced in by pressure, in the operation preceding the rotating operation.
As already indicated, it is not necessary, in order to obtain the effect mentioned, for the screw-thread formation 11 to be complete, it could, for instance, be limited to three parts distributed over one turn, or it could be possible to divide one turn of the screw-thread by the provision of holes (not illustrated) located in different places in a high part 12 of a screw-thread 11 or even extending over several fillets 12; these holes also enabling the same effect to be obtained as the holes 14, that is to say, to increase the compression capacity of the part 10 of the device.
The high parts of the screw-thread will consequently create lines or parts of lines comprising successive retaining places for the device both in different places in the length and on the diameter of the wall hole. Consequently it is thought preferable to provide more than one turn of the screw-thread 11.
The pitch of the screw-thread 11 and the width of the fillet (as shown in the drawing) are given purely by way of example; indeed, they may fundamentally vary; the direction of rotation will not influence the effect sought after but generally it will be the usual one for a screw.
With reference to Figs. 5, 6, 8 and 9, there is shown therein the same device as in the preceding Figures, (from the same viewpoint as Fig. 1) but this time fitted with a complementary piece 1 5 (Fig. 7) initially located (Figs. 5 and 8) in the straight part 9, then conveyed outwards (Fig. 6 and 9) by means of a long bolt (or a right-hand screw) 1 6 in such a way that the inner face of this complementary piece pushes on the low parts 1 3 of the screw-thread 11 and forces the high parts 12 to pass further out of a circle having the normal outside diameter of the device. Of course, in this case the inside faces of the low parts 1 3 must lie in a circle having a diameter smaller than that of the normal inside diameter of the device (see Figs. 8 and 9).
The complementary piece 1 5 (Fig. 7) is of a shape which is mainly cylindrical with an outside diameter identical with the normal inside diameter of the device, this complementary piece terminating in a slightly coned part 1 spa and having at its centre, along its entire length, a right-hand screw-thread 1 sub permitting rotation of the long bolt 1 6 which is inserted through the extremity 6 and which takes support against the extremity 6, for instance by means of a plate comprising an aperture. In order to prevent the complementary piece from rotating when the bolt 1 6 is turned, said complementary piece is provided with a guide 17, in the form of a small lug, which is located in the longitudinal slot 3. It should be noted that the bolt 1 6 is generally withdrawn after it has, partly or completely, drawn back complementary piece 1 5 into the part 10 of the device, this is done by simply executing a rotation in a direction opposite to that envisaged for drawing back the part 15, the lug 1 7 of which prevents it from rotating.
A device in accordance with this second embodiment of the device 1 may be used in the same way as the first embodiment illustrated, with the part 1 5 only being drawn back after one has completely forced the device into the hole of the wall 2, and the device 1, illustrated in the Figs. 5 and 6, may comprise all of the variants described in relation to the device shown in Figs. 1 to 4, but if a complementary piece 1 5 is used, there may be envisaged the use of the coned part 1 5a reversed, that is to say, located at that extremity of the device which is designed to be inserted into the wall, it being permissible for this part 1 spa to project (prior to the drawingback of the part 15) from the device 1, with the latter having only a straight extremity (no coned portion), and the conical head 1 spa of the part 1 5 used for facilitating the insertion of the device 1; if the device is envisaged as being made of metal formed from a stamped and bent plate, complementary piece 1 5 may be made of metal or more generally of nylon or another hard synthetic material.
The invention is, of course, not limited to the embodiments described and illustrated, and within the scope of the invention, other modifications may be made, for example with regard to the shape and the size of the holes 4, 14, the cut-outs 5, 7, and of course in the arrangement of the outer part of the device which will be according to the purpose for which it is intended, and always provided that these changes are not at variance with the result aimed at which is to provide a device offering a good lateral expansion capability that is to say, which will become encrusted in the side wall of the hole in the wall. The size of the variation of the high parts 1 2 in relation to the normal circle of the device may vary, for example, between 1 to 5 mm, depending especially on the size of the device itself, the diameter and the the length of which are variable, whereby provision can be made for an entire range of devices.
Whilst in the first embodiment (Figs. 1 to 4) it is essential, in order to obtain the effect allowed for, for the device to be forced in at least partly by rotating, in the second embodiment (Figs. 5 to 9), on the other hand, this is no longer indispensable; indeed in can be essentially by means of the complementary piece 1 5 that the insertion of the high parts 1 2 into the side wall of the hole in the wall is achieved, a smaller variation of high parts 1 2 in relation to the normal outer circle of the device may certainly be envisaged since it can be increased to a lesser or greater extent by means of the complementary piece 1 5 in this embodiment, it is, moreover, the extent of the variation of the low parts 1 3 in relation to the normal inner circle of the device which will finally influence the possible extent of the variation of the high parts 1 2. In this second embodiment, since the screw-thread 11 is not necessarily used to enable the device to be inserted by rotating, the formation of the screw-thread may certainly be only very partial and deviate from the usual screw-thread design.
It should be noted that, in order validly to produce by stamping the form of the screwthread 11 with the high parts 1 2 outside of the normal circle of the device, the forcing in is to be done via the side of the plate or strip which will become the inner surface of the device.
It is quite permissible to keep the long right-hand screw or bolt 1 6 in the device but this would be an uneconomic solution and so it will normally always be withdrawn, this being possible owing to provision of the guide-lug 1 7.
The present invention moreover concerns that part of an attachment or hooking device insertable into a wall or face; indeed, the portion projecting from the wall or face may be arranged in any known or suitable manner and may vary in form substantially, according to whether it is designed to, for example, accommodate a part, support a radiator component, or one or several ductings, and so forth.
