A dog 8a of the slide 8 projects through an aperture 9e in lever 9 between said rearward portion 9d and a forward portion 9a of lever 9, pivoted on clamping lever screw 6, and its side portions of lever 9. Aperture 9e is long enough and wide enough to accommodate the advancement and retraction of dog 8a and the side-to-side pivoting of lever 9. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
A Plane
This invention relates to a plane.
As seen from one aspect of the invention, there is provided a plane comprising a body, an elongate cutter, a cutting edge at one end of the cutter projecting through a slot in a base of the body, a clamping lever for clamping the cutter near the cutting edge between the base and the clamping lever, a selectively operable mechanism for selectively either making the clamping lever clamp the cutter or releasing the clamping lever so that the clamping lever can be detached from the body and from the cutter, permitting the cutter to be removed from the body, a cutteradjusting screw screw-threadedly engaging the body and extending generally parallel to the length of the cutter between the clamping lever and the cutter on the one hand and the base on the other hand, a cutter adjustment slide connected to the cutter-adjusting screw for advancement and retraction of the slide upon turning of the screw, the slide including a dog which engages the cutter to cause corresponding advancement and retraction of the cutter, and a lateral adjustment lever which is pivoted by a forward portion thereof to the body and can be pivoted from side to side of the body, said forward portion of the lateral adjustment lever engaging the cutter to slew the cutter from side-to-side for levelling the cutting edge, characterised in that at least a transversely extending rearward portion of the lateral adjustment lever is arranged between the cutter and the slide, the dog projecting through an aperture in the lateral adjustment lever between said forward and rearward portions and two opposite side portions of the lateral adjustment lever, the aperture being wide enough to accommodate the side-to-side pivoting of the lateral adjustment lever and long enough to accommodate the advancement and retraction of the dog, the dog maintaining the cutter clear of said transversely extending rearward portion of the lateral adjustment lever, the transversely extending rearward portion of the lateral adjustment lever being joined by said two opposite side portions extending forwardly thereof to said forward portion thereof.
The invention will be described by way of 'example with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a block plane
embodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a section along line Il-Il of Fig. 3
Fig. 3 is a plan view of the plane;
Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of part of the plane;
corresponding to Fig. 2;
Fig. 5 is a section on line V-V of Fig. 4;
Fig. 6 is a section on line VI--VI of Fig. 4;
Fig. 7 is a side elevation of a cutter of the
plane;
Fig. 8 is an underneath plan view of the cutter;
Fig. 9 is a section on IX-IX of Fig. 7;;
Figs. 10, 11 s 1 2 are respectively a side elevation, an end elevation and a plan view of a cutter adjustment slide of the plane; and
Figs. 13, 14 43 1 5 are respectively a side elevation an end elevation and a plan view of a lateral adjustment lever of the plane.
Referring to the drawings, the illustrated block plane 1 comprises a body 2, an elongate cutter 3, a clamping lever 4, a cam 5, a "lever-screw" 6, a cutter-adjusting screw 7, a cutter adjustment slide 8, and a lateral adjustment lever 9.
A cutting edge 3a at one end of the cutter 3 projects through a slot 2a in a base 2b of the body 2. The clamping lever 4 is pivotable about the screw 6 and is acted upon by the cam 5 to clamp the cutter 3 near the cutting edge 3a between the base 2b and the clamping lever 4. The cam 5 is selectively pivotable as shown in Fig. 2, about an axis which extends transversely of the plane, that is, perpendicularly to the drawing in Fig. 2 for either making the clamping lever 4 clamp the cutter 3 or releasing the clamping lever 4 so that the clamping lever 4 can be detached from the body 2 and from the cutter 3, permitting the cutter 3 to be removed from the body 2. Figure 2 shows a release position of the cam 5 in phantom. The cam 5 acts upon cutter 3 indirectly via a metal strip 10 which is attached to lever 4 by a screw 1 Oa.
The cutter adjusting screw 7 screw-threadedly engages the body 2, as shown in Figures 2 and 4, and extends generally parallel to the length of the cutter 3 between the clamping lever 4 and the cutter 3 on the one hand and the base 2b on the other hand. The cutter-adjustment slide 8 is connected to the cutter-adjusting screw 7 for advancement and retraction of the slide 8 upon turning the screw 7. The slide 8 includes a dog 8a which is engaged with a selected one of several slots 3b in the cutter 3 to cause corresponding advancement and retraction of the cutter 3 with advancement and retraction of the slide 8.
The lateral adjustment lever 9 is pivoted by a forward portion 9a thereof to the body 2 by being pivoted on the screw 6, and can be pivoted from side to side of the body 2 as shown in Figure 6. A hole 9b for the screw 6 is internally screwthreaded to reduce play between the lever 9 and the screw 6. As shown in Figure 6, the forward portion 9a of the lever 9 bears at 9c, where the forward portion 9a is at its widest, on the sides of a slot 3c in the cutter 3 in order to slew the cutter 3 from side to side with the lateral movement of the lever 9, for levelling the cutting edge 3a.
Because of the relatively shallow angle of the cutter 3 relative to the base 2b of the body 2, the space for the lateral adjustment lever 9 is very limited. Accordingly a transversely extending rearward portion 9d of the lever 9 is arranged between the cutter 3 and the slide 8, as shown in
Figure 4. The dog 8a accordingly has to project through an aperture 9e in the lateral adjustment lever 9 between said forward portion 9a and said rearward portion 9d and between two opposite side portions 9f (Fig. 15) of the lever 9. The aperture 9e is (and has to be) wide enough to accommodate the side to side pivoting of the lateral adjustment lever 9 and long enough to accommodate the advancement and retraction of the dog 8a. The dog 8a maintains the cutter 3 clear of the transversely extending rearward portion 9d of the lever 9, in order to avoid excessive friction between the cutter 3 and the lever 9. The transversely extending rearward portion 9d of the lever 9 is joined by the two opposite side portions 9f extending forwardly thereof to the forward portion 9a of the lever 9.
