Referring now to Fig. 1 of the drawings, there is shown a display stand 10 comprising a frame 11 having a lower rectangular base 12, an upper rectangular canopy 1 3 having the same dimensions as the base 1 2 and two pairs of elongate edge strips 1 4. Each strip 14 is of 'L' shape cross-section and is upstanding from a respective corner of the base 1 2 and an upper end portion of each strip is secured to a respective corner of the canopy 1 3 thereby supporting the canopy in a raised position relative to the base 1 2. The base 1 2 has depending therefrom a plinth 1 5.
The frame 11 contains a partition 1 6 upstanding from the base 1 2 and located equal distances inwardly of the base from a pair of opposite sides of the base. The partition 1 6 has a plurality of pairs of platforms 1 7 extending transversely thereof in spaced parallel relation upwardly from the base 12, the panels of each pair extending from opposite surfaces of the partition at equal distances above the base 12.The base 12, the canopy 1 3 and each of the platforms 1 7 is provided with a pair of spaced apertures 1 8 adjacent an edge extending parallel to the partition 1 6. The apertures 1 8 have the same diameter and are located relative to one another so that the apertures of each intermediate panel 1 7 are located below and above corresponding apertures in adjacent panels. The frame 11 is provided with a rectangular side panel 1 9 located by one pair of the edge strips 14, the side panel 1 9 having a transverse dimension corresponding to the spacing of said pair of edge strips and having a longitudinal dimensions corresponding to the spacing of the canopy 1 3 from the base 1 2. The side panel 1 9 is provided with an aperture 20 intermediate its upper and lower ends.
The frame 11 also contains four metal rods 21 each of which has a smaller diameter than the diameter of each of the apertures 1 8 and each rod 21 has the same longitudinal dimension as the strips 1 4 and extends through apertures 1 8 of the platforms 17, the longitudinal axes of the rods being parallel to the strips 14.
One of the strips 1 4 remote from the side panel 1 9 is provided with three longitudinally spaced hinges 22 and the other of the strips 1 4 remote from the side panel 1 9 is provided with a face plate 23 projecting from the associated strip 1 4 towards the other strip 1 4 paired therewith and between two pairs of adjacent platforms. The lower pair of the platforms 1 7 are provided with an upstanding plate 24 having an aperture 25 therein. The strips 14 have secured thereto a pair of cover panels 26 and 27 which are located parallel to the partition 16 outside of the rods 21 and between the said two pairs of adjacent platforms.
The hinges 22 are secured to a longitudinal margin of a rectangular door 28 having inner and outer surfaces corresponding in area to inner and outer surfaces of the side panel 1 9.
The door is provided with a lock mechanism 29 having a rotatably mounted plate 30. The door is pivotable on the hinges 22 from an open position as shown in Fig. 1 to a closed position in which it is parallel to the side panel 1 9. When in the closed position, the lock mechanism is operated whereby the plate 30 is rotated and engages a rear surface of the face plate 23, restraining pivotal movement of the door 28 from the closed position.
In use, the stand 10 is located with the plinth supported on a surface. The locking mechanism is rotated to release the plate 30 from engagement with the face plate 23 and the door 28 is pivoted to an open position as shown in Fig. 1. Pairs of spectacles then are inserted longitudinally onto each of the platforms 17, except those supporting the upstanding plate 24, and on the base 1 2 on either side of the partition 1 6. The door then is closed and locked. The pairs of spectacles can be viewed on the platforms 1 7 but are restrained from being removed in a direction normal to the plane of the partition 1 6 by the rods 21.When a selected pair of spectacles is to be removed from the stand 10, the door is unlocked and opened and the selected pair of spectacles is withdrawn from an associated platform 1 7 in a direction parallel to the plane of the partition 16. The door is then closed and locked.
The stand may be made of metal such as aluminum, except for the door, which may be of steel.
