Abstract

A compact assembly of an internal combustion engine and a heat pump compressor comprises at least one compressor cylinder (4) and at least one engine cylinder (2, 3) provided in a common cylinder block (1), with the engine arranged to drive the compressor, and a rotary face seal (14) is located in an annular recess (13) on a compressor crankshaft web (12) and co-operates with a counterface (18) carried by a bearing (11) common both to the compressor crankshaft (9) and an engine crankshaft (8). These crankshaft members (8, 9) are rigidly coupled together coaxially, e.g. by interengaging teeth or splines (10). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to heat pumps This invention concerns heat pumps and relates more particularly to heat pumps driven by internal combustion engines.
One compact drive arrangement for a heat pump of this kind is described in German Patent Application No. P. 28 44 664.2, and is of a construction such that the space provided in a common cylinder block used both for an internal combustion engine and for a compressor, that is to say, the space between the cylinders of the internal combustion engine and those of the compressor, serves to accommodate the slide ring seal or rotary face seal. Serving to isolate the engine section of the block from the compressor section.
It is an object of the invention so to construct a heat pump drive assembly having the advantages of compact construction, particularly that of a small spatial requirement in an axial direction, that the rotary face seal required for sealing between the engine and the compressor does not take up any additional space in an axial direction, that is to say the engine cylinders and the compressor cylinder are directly adjacent to one another at the location of the face seal.
The present invention accordingly provides a heat pump drive assembly comprising a cylinder block provided with at least one compressor cylinder for a compressor of the heat pump and at least one engine cylinder for an internal combustion engine arranged to drive said compressor, the compressor and the engine being structurally combined to form a unit, a crankshaft including a compressor crankshaft member at the compressor side of the cylinder block and an engine crankshaft member at the engine side of said block, said crankshaft members being arranged in alignment by rigid inter-engagement of mutually facing ends thereof in the region of a common bearing, and a sliding ring seal or rotary face seal acting to provide a fluid seal for the compressor crankshaft member at the compressor side of said common bearing, characterised in that the rotary face seal is at least partially accommodated in a recess provided therefor in the end face of a web of the compressor crankshaft member which faces the common bearing, said face seal engaging and co-operating with a counterface surface arranged on said common bearing.
Thus, in accordance with the invention, the slide ring seal or rotary face seal is accommodated in that space which already serves to accommodate the compressor crankshaft member which is associated with a cylinder of the compressor, without requiring additional space in an axial direction for accomodating the seal.
The invention will be described further, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, which is an axial section through a heat pump drive unit embodying the invention.
In the embodiment shown in the drawing, the cylinder block 1, which may be a conventional internal combustion engine cylinder block, is provided with three cylinders, the cylinders designated 2 and 3 being engine cylinders, and cylinder 4 being a compressor cylinder. All the cylinders are closed by a common cylinder head 5, which is provided with the usual inlet and exhaust valves for the internal combustion engine in a conventional manner which need not be further described Avalve arrangement 6 of the compressor, however, is counter-sunk or received within the space provided in the cylinder block for the compressor cylinder 4, the height of the compressor cylinder for this purpose being less than that of the engine cylinders 2 and 3.
A common crankshaft 7 extends below the cylinders 2, 3 and 4 and is a combined assembly obtained by combining a crankshaft member 8 extending through the engine region of the cylinder block with a crankshaft member 9 of the compressor so as to be in alignment with one another and non-rotatable relative to one another.
For this purpose, as indicated by the reference numeral 10, the two mutually facing ends of the crankshaft members 8 and 9 are engaged one within the other in the region of a common crankshaft bearing 11 situated between them. In the example shown in the drawing, the end of the crankshaft 8 is recessed and its internal circumference is toothed or splined to engage cooperating complementary teeth or splines on the external circumference of the end of the crankshaft member 9.
It will be appreciated, and thus need not be described in detail, that the two crankshaft members 8 and 9 are connected by connecting rods to pistons which operate in the individual cylinders 2, 3 and 4.
As provided by the invention, the web 12 of the crankshaft member 9 of the compressor which is adjacent to the bearing 11 has an annular recess 1 3 which is open towards the bearing 11 and receives the principal components of a sliding ring seal or rotary face seal 14.The actual slide ring or face seal 1 5 is pressed to the left (as viewed in the drawing) against a slide or counterface surface 18 on the bearing 11 by a spring 17 of which one end abuts against the bottom of the recess 1 3 and the other end seats against a spring abutment plate 1 6. In the illustrated embodiment, the slide or counterface surface 1 8 is presented by an end flange of an angle section or flanged annular sleeve member 19 which abuts against the actual bearing 11 by way of an interposed seal 20.
This arrangement ensures that the space which is immediately adjacent to the compressor side of the bearing 11 and which is "below" the cylinder 4, can also serve to accommodate a connecting rod, thereby enabling the cylinder 4 in fact to accommodate the compressor. Thus, the seal between the compressor crankshaft member 8 and the engine crankshaft member 9, the subdivision of the common crankshaft 7 into those two members 8 and 9, and the plug-in connection thereby required at the engagement interface 10, are, in the present invention, accommodated in the components of drive which are in any case required.
