Abstract

A security device for windows comprises a sheet 1 of a tough translucent plastics material applied over the outside of a window frame A, the sheet being held in position in contact with the outside of the frame by bands 5 passing through clips 3 on the edges of the sheet and tensioned over rods or bars 6 engaging the inside of the wall of the building. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in Security Devices for Buildings This invention relates to improvements in security devices for the windows of buildings.
Vacant buildings suffer damage from vandals and the first damage is normally the breaking of windows followed byburglary. Suggestions for protecting windows have been made, the most common being boarding up the window but this has the disadvantage that the window frame is damaged by nailing the boarding to the frames and the blacking out of the interior of the buildings.
The object of the invention is to provide means for safeguarding the windows without damage thereto.
According to the invention a security device for the windows of buildings comprises a sheet of a tough plastics material applied over the outside of the window and window frame with substantially U-shaped clips applied at intervals at right angles to the sides and each bolted or riveted to the plastic sheet, a band applied around each clip being tensioned around a rod or bar adapted to bear on the inner side of the wall in which the window frame is mounted to prevent the removal of or damage to the window.
The invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings: Fig. 1 is a perspective view of a window using the protective screen.
Fig. 2 is an exploded perspective view of the window guard; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail of part of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a clip; Fig. 5 is a section on 5-5 of Fig. 1.
A sheet of translucent tough reinforced plastics material such as that sold under our Registered Trade Mark Vandalite is applied over the outside of the window frame A as a window guard, a strip of metal 2 (Fig. 3) being applied around the edges of the sheet and affixed thereto on the back before application to the window.
The sheet 1 is affixed to the outside of the window frame A by substantially U-shaped clips 3 extending over the edge of the sheet 1 and strip 2, the two legs of the clips 3 being bolted or riveted together with the sheet 1 sandwiched therebetween. One leg of the clip is bent inwards adjacent one end to leave a slot 4 between the strip and the rivet to receive a metal band 5 extending around the leg of the clip 2 and a rod or bar 6 applied to the wall above and below the opening of window frame A or between the two sides thereof. Means are provided for tensioning the band to secure the sheet in position over the window and frame.
Two or more clips 3 may be applied to each edge of the sheet and the window is protected without substantially darkening the interior of the room.
The protective and safety device has the following advantages: (a) the device is re-usable after removal, (b) no damage to the window frame (c) translucency (d) cannot be dismantled from outside and (e) can be readily dismantled from inside.
