Abstract

In manufacturing a windshield wiper with a blade (3, 4) and a carrier (1) of generally flat rectangular cross-section with a single continuous longitudinal undercut channel to house a rectangular section (3) of the blade, the carrier (1) is moulded, preferably in polypropylene, in situ using the rectangular section (3) of the blade as a core. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improved windshield wiper This invention relates to windshield wipers.
In United Kingdom Patent Specification 1,212,131, there is described and claimed a windshield wiper comprising an elastomeric blade mounted by a flange in an undercut channel extending along the concave side of a resilient and flexible carrier which is arcuate in its unloaded condition over at least part of its length, whereby when an intermediate zone of the carrier is compressed towards a windshield, substantially the whole length of the blade will be urged into conformity and wiping contact with the windshield.
In a preferred form of the invention in that specification the carrier is of a generally flat rectangular cross-section and has a single continuous undercut channel extending from end to end of the blade carrier. Such a configuration is difficult to mould in the plastics material, such as polypropylene, envisaged, since the continuous undercut channel is not easily released from the mould.
According to the present invention, there is provided a method of forming a windshield wiper having a carrier of generally flat rectangular cross section with a single continuous undercut channel extending between the ends of the blade carrier, in which the carrier is moulded in situ around a preformed wiper blade.
By this means the difficulties of moulding arising from the need to remove the carrier from its mould are overcome by using the blade itself as a core to form the undercut channel.
The invention also comprehends windshield wiperr formed according to the invention as set forth above.
The invention will be further described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wiper in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the invention; and Figure 2 is a section on the line Il-Il of Figure 1.
The wiper illustrated herein is basically similar to that described in United Kingdom Patent Specification 1 212 The carrier comprises a strip 1 of polypropylene polycarbonate or similar resilient plastics material, which is arcuate in the unloaded state as illustrated in Figure 1, is of rectangular cross-section and has on the convex face an attach ment boss 2 for pivotal connection, by some suitable means (not shown), to a windshield wiper arm of conventional nature. The actual connection is not part of the present invention but for completeness it is mentioned that it may include a set screw for clamping, or alternatively some form of clip or clamp may be used.
The blade itself has a rectangular section portion 3 forming two longitudinal flanges, an intermediate neck 4 and a wiper portion 5 which can flex about the neck 4 and is also somewhat extensible so as to enable it to conform to the shape of a windshield as the carrier and blade oscillate.
The carrier is moulded around the rectangular sectional portion 3 and neck 4.
The rubber or elastomeric material of which the blade is formed must therefore be able to maintain its shape and physical and chemical properties during the moulding step.
As illustrated, the thickness of the carrier strip 1 is tapered away from the centre of the carrier to assist in allowing this to conform to the shape of the windshield.
Various modifications may be made within the scope of the invention.
1. A method of forming a windshield wiper having a carrier of generally flat rectangular crosssection with a single continuous undercut channel extending between the ends of the blade carrier, in which the carrier is moulded in situ around a preformed wiper blade.
2. A method as claimed in claim 1, in which the carrier is moulded of polypropylene.
3. A method as claimed in claim 1 or 2, in which the blade has a body portion of rectangular section connected by a neck to a wiping portion, the body portion being wider than the neck forming two longitudinal flanges around which the carrier is moulded.
4. A method of forming a windshield wiper substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
5. A windshield wiper having a blade and an in situ moulded carrier formed by a method as claimed in any of claims 1 to 4.
