Abstract

A reel seat for receiving the leg of a fishing reel comprises a main body 1 having an externally threaded portion 2 on its outer periphery and at least one outer cutout 3 formed in the externally threaded portion and extending longitudinally of the main body, and a fastening nut 5 fittable to the externally threaded portion in screw-thread engagement therewith and having an internally threaded portion 6, 7 on its inner periphery. The internally threaded portion is formed with an inner cutout except for the part thereof corresponding to the outer cutout and is engageable with the externally threaded portion of the main body. The fastening nut is slidable longitudinally of the main body when the internally threaded portion is out of engagement with the externally threaded portion. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A reel seat for receiving the foot of a fishing reel The present invention relates to a reel seat for receiving the foot of a fishing reel.

Generally reel seats are attached to the outer periphery of a fishing rod to render a reel detachably mountable on the fishing rod.

Reel seats heretofore known comprise a main body having an externally threaded portion on its outer periphery, a fastening nut screwed on the threaded portion and having an inner peripheral threaded portion, and a hood fixedly mounted on the front end of the main body. The feet of the reel are held between the fixed hood and a movable hood pushable by the fastening nut or a front end tapered portion of the nut. When the fastening nut is tightened up, the feet of the reel can be. firmly fixed to the top of the main body.

However such known reel seats have the following drawbacks. First, the fastening nut must be turned many times with the feet of the reel placed on the main body in order to completely attach the reel to the seat. Second, the foot of the reel to be mounted on the seat must be firstly held against the body for a long time by hand until the movable hood or a tapered front end portion of the fastening nut reaches the foot. Third, when removing the reel from the main body, the fastening nut must be turned similarly many times with the foot of the reel firmly held by the hand.

According to the invention, there is provided a reel seat for receiving the foot of a fishing reel, the seat comprising a main body having an externally threaded portion on its outer periphery and at least one cutout formed in the externally threaded portion and extending longitudinally of the main body, and a fastening nut adapted for screw-thread engagement with the externally threaded portion and having an internally threaded portion on its inner periphery, the internally threaded portion being cut away except for the part thereof corresponding to the cutout in the main body, the internally threaded portion of the fastening nut being fittable to the externally threaded portion of the main body in screw-thread engagement therewith, the fastening nut being slidable longitudinally of the main body when the internally threaded portion is out of screw-thread engagement with the externally threaded portion.

Preferably the externally threaded portion and the internally threaded portion have multiple-start threads.

A pair of diametrically opposed outer cutouts may be formed in the externally threaded portion.

Alternatively, a pair of outer cutouts may be formed in the externally threaded portion which are not diametrically opposed to each other.

The fastening nut may be provided on its outer periphery with a mark for indicating whether or not the fastening nut is in a position where it is slidable longitudinally of the main body.

The invention will now be further described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a front view of a first embodiment of a seat according to the invention showing a fastening nut in its tightened-up position; Figure 2 is a plan view of the seat of Fig. 1; Figure 3 is a front view showing the fastening nut as released from its tightened-up position; Figure 4 is an end view of the seat; Figure 5 is a front view of a second embodiment of a reel seat according to the invention, showing a fastening nut in its tightenedup position; Figure 6 is a plan view of the seat of Fig. 5; and Figure 7 is a front view showing the fastening nut as released from its tightened-up position.

The reel seat shown in Figs. 1 to 4 comprises a main body 1 in the form of a pipe and formed with an externally threaded portion 2 on the outer periphery of its rear half.

The externally threaded portion 2 has a pair of outer cutouts 3 and 4 opposed to each other diametrically of the main body 1 and extending longitudinally thereof.

A fastening nut 5 fittable to the externally threaded portion 2 in screw-thread engagement therewith is formed on its inner periphery with an internally threaded portion which is cut away except for the portions 6 and 7 corresponding to the pair of cutouts 3 and 4 in the externally threaded portion 2 to provide inner cutouts 8 and 9.

The remaining portions 6 and 7 of the internally threaded portion have a circumferential width a which is smaller than the circumferential width b of the outer cutouts 3 and 4 formed in the externally threaded portion 2.

The fastening nut 5 is formed on its outer peripheral surface with a pair of marks 10 opposed to each other diametrically thereof.

The mark 10, when positioned immediately above the top of the main body as seen in Fig. 3, plainly indicates that the fastening nut 5 is in a state in which it is slidable longitudinally of the main body 1.

The main body 1 is fixedly provided at its front end with a hood 11 for holding the front end of the leg or foot of a reel. A movable hood 1 2 loosely fitting around the main body 1, when pushed by the fastening nut 5, holds the rear end of the leg of the reel.

To attach the leg of the reel to the reel seat, the reel is placed on the top of the seat main body 1 first with the front end of the leg retained by the fixed hood 11. Subsequently the fastening nut 5 in the position of Figs. 3 and 4 with the mark 10 immediately above the top of the main body 1 is slidingly moved longitudinally of the main body 1 toward the leg of the reel to cause the movable hood 12 toward the leg of the reel to cause the movable hood 1 2 to retain the rear end of the reel. The fastening nut 5 is thereafter turned through 90 degrees and tightened up to the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 to firmly hold the leg of the reel with the fixed hood 11 and the movable hood 12. Thus the reel is secured to the top of the reel seat.

To remove the leg of the reel from the seat, the fastening nut 5 in its tightened up position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is turned through 90 degrees to its loosened position seen in Figs. 3 and 4, and the movable hood 1 2 and the fastening nut 5 are thereafter slidingly moved away from the reel leg.

Figs. 5 to 7 show another reel which differs from the reel seat of Figs. 1 to 4 in that the main body 15 of the reel seat is formed in its top with a horizontal recessed portion 1 6 for placing the leg of the reel thereon with stability. The seat is not provided with any movable hood but had a fastening nut 18 formed with a front tapered portion 1 7 which plays the role of such hood. The seat has a mark 1 9 in the form of an elongated groove.

To attach the leg of the reel to the reel seat, the reel is placed on the main body 1 5 with its leg on the horizontal recessed portion 16; the fastening nut 1 8 with the mark 1 9 positioned immediately above the top of the main body as seen in Fig. 7 is slidingly moved toward the leg of the reel to cause the tapered portion 1 7 of the nut 1 8 to retain the rear end of the leg, and the fastening nut 1 8 is turned through 90 degrees to its tightened-up position shown in Figs. 5 and 6.

With the reel seat described above, the internally threaded portion of the fastening nut is fittable to the externally threaded portion of the main body in screw-thread engagement therewith, or the fastening nut is slida ble longitudinally of the main body when the threaded portions are out of engagement with each other, so that the leg of a reel is mountable on the main body by a single action.

Since the reel is mountable in place by a single action quickly, the leg of the reel to be mounted need not be manually held to the seat for a long time.

Additionally the reel is demountable also by a single action without the necessity of hold ing the leg of the reel by hand for a long time.

The externally threaded portion and the internally threaded portion can be double- or multiple-threaded (i.e. multi-start threads), in which case the threads can be formed with an.

increased pitch, permitting the fastening nut to be tightened up effectively even when turned by a small amount.

The pair of outer cutouts can be arranged out of opposed relation to each other diametrically of the externally threaded portion. As is the case with only one outer cutout formed in the externally threaded portion, the fastening nut will then be slidable only in a single turned position, so that the fastening nut is turnable through a large angle of more than 1 80 degrees to fasten the reel with an increased force.

On the other hand, when the pair of outer cutouts are arranged opposite to each other diametrically of the externally threaded portion as in the foregoing two embodiments, the fastening nut is slidable in two turned positions and is therefore not turnable more than 1 80 degrees for fastening. In this case, however, the pair of symmetrically arranged outer cutouts render the fastening nut smoothly slidable with stability.

Claims

1. A reel seat for receiving the foot of a fishing reel, the seat comprising a main body having an externally threaded portion on its outer periphery and at least one cutout formed in the externally threaded portion and extending longitudinally of the main body, and a fastening nut adapted for screw-thread engagement with the externally threaded portion and having an internally threaded portion on its inner periphery, the internally threaded portion being cut away except for the part thereof corresponding to the cutout in the main body, the internally threaded portion of the fastening nut being fittable to the externally threaded portion of the main body in screw-thread engagement therewith, the fastening nut being slidable longitudinally of the main body when the internally threaded portion is out of screw-thread engagement with the externally threaded portion.

2. A reel seat as claimed in claim 1 wherein the externally threaded portion and the internally threaded portion are double- or multi-threaded.

3. A reel as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein a pair of diametrically opposed cutouts are formed in the externally threaded portion.

4. A reel seat as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein a pair of cutouts are formed in the externally threaded portion, which are not diametrically opposite to each other.

5. A reel seat as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 4 wherein a mark is provided on the outer periphery of the fastening nut to indicate whether or not the fastening nut is in a position where it is slidable longitudinally of the main body.

6. A reel seat for receiving the foot of a fishing reel, substantially as herein described with reference to either Figs. 1 to 4 or Figs. 5 to 7 of the accompanying drawings.
