An incontinence pad comprising an impervious backing layer (10), a central absorbent layer or layers (11) and a layer of spacer/ support material (12) pervious to the passage of fluid and capable in use of providing a pliant cushioned support for the patient whilst keeping him in spaced apart relationship from the absorbent layer or layers (11). A suitable spacer/support layer (12) is the packing material known generally as "Bubble- Glaze". <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvement in or relating to incontinence pads
This invention relates to incontinence pads and specifically to absorbent incontinence pads.
In the event of incontinence in bed it is more difficult to clean soiled bed linen/mattress than the patient and, in general, absorbent incontinence pads have been designed to protect the bed rather than the patient. Furthermore, since such devices should obviously be disposable, there is a significant sensitivity to their cost because of the large numbers involved. Although it is obviously very desirable on both social and clinical grounds that incontinence pads are replaced as soon as possible after soiling, it is unfortunate that such ideal conditions are infrequently realised in practice.Apart from the clinical risks of infection-which will be high if the skin is broken or if ulcers are present-the skin itself and the underlying tissues can deteriorate due to exposure to the wet/toxic products of incontinence with the resultant development of acute conditions.
Absorbent incontinence pads are well known and comprise an impervious plastic backing sheet to protect the bed, central absorbent layers to absorb liquids and an upper layer of simple gauze of adequate wet strength to ensure mechanical coherence of the whole and to assist in the easy removal of the soiled pad from the patient. Some known pads use sophisticated hydrophobic materials for the upper layer suggesting that they will minimise wetting of the skin. In practice however the weight of the patient on the compliant mattress deforms the pad to a somewhat concave shape and compresses the absorbent hydrophilic. When soiled, the thickness and hydrophobic properties of the upper gauze layer are insufficient to prevent wetting of the skin from the wet absorbent central layers which are being compressed by the patient.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a simple form of absorbent incontinence pad which will protect not only the bed linen/mattress but also provide a significantly enhanced degree of protection to the patient.
According to the present invention an incontinence pad comprises an impervious backing layer, a central absorbent layer or layers and a layer of spacer/support material pervious to the passage of fluid and capable in use of maintaining a patient in a spaced apart relationship from the absorbent layer or layers.
Preferably the spacer/support material offers a degree of shape accommodating properties to prevent the generation of high tissue bearing pressures. One specific commercially available material which has been found ideal for use as the spacer/support material is known generally as "Bubble-Glaze" or "Air Pack". This material as supplied consists of a regular array of discrete ga.s4illed thin-walled plastic bubbles attached to a thin plastic backing sheet. As supplied this material is impervious and it is necessary therefore to perforate the thin plastic backing sheet to meet the need for the spacer/support material to be pervious. Preferably the thin plastic backing sheet is perforated in the regions between the discrete bubbles. The physical geometry of the bubbles is such that in use the patient is provided with a pliant cushioned support which holds him clear of the absorbent layers.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the incontinence pad comprises also an upper gauze layer, the layer of pervious spacer/support material being situate between the gauze layer and the central absorbent layer or layers.
In this latter preferred embodiment the spacer/support material might conveniently be incorporated in the incontinence pad by being secured along its edge region or alternatively it could be simply inserted between the outer gauze layer and the absorbent layer or layers.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawing which shows a section through an incontinence pad made in accordance with the invention.
The incontinence pad comprises an impervious backing layer 10, an absorbent pad 11 made up of a series of layers of absorbent material, a pervious spacer/support material 12 and a top gauze layer 13. The edge region of the impervious backing layer 10 is folded over the edge regions of the absorbent pad 11, spacer/support material 12 and gauze layer 13 and an edge join 14 is effected by sewing or welding as in the construction of conventional incontinence pads.
The distinguishing feature of the incontinence pad of the invention is the inclusion of the spacer/support material 12 which comprises discrete air bubbles 15 entrapped between thin plastic sheets suitably perforated as at 16 between the air bubbles 15. The discrete air bubbles 15 provide a pliant support base for the patient whilst maintaining his skin above the region of the soiled absorbent pad 11.
The spacer/support material 12 should ideally have some or all of the following properties:
(i) Adequate thickness to keep the patient's skin above the general fluid level at all times.
(ii) Permit the rapid passage of fluid through to the absorbent layer or layers.
(iii) Adequate shape accommodating properties to prevent the generation of high tissues bearing pressures.
(iv) Impervious to the products of incontinence.
(v) Non-toxic to patient.
(vi) Low thermal conductivity and low thermal capacity.
(vii) Have adequate non-wetting surface properties.
Such properties could be found in certain open cell foams, "rubberised" hair or similar foam or even polystyrene beads contained in a porous bag.
A preferred material however and one which is commercially available is known generally as "Bubble-Glaze" or "Air-Pack" although as supplied the material is impervious.
It is necessary therefore to perforate this material in the regions between the entrapped air bubbles. "Bubble-Glaze" is relatively cheap, being used in the packaging industry, and the perforations could easily be incorporated when the material is being made.
The invention provides therefore an improved incontinence pad which offers considerable advantage to the clinical well-being of the patient without a significant increase in cost.
It will be readily appreciated that the invention is not limited to the incorporation of socalled "Bubble-Glaze" material and that the principle of the invention is the broad concept of the provision of a pervious spacer/support material to maintain the patient's skin apart from the soiled absorbent pad.
A further addition to the incontinence pad of the invention is the incorporation of an element which will give an indication of when the pad has been soiled; in effect the inclusion of an enuresis alarm. The sensor element may take many forms, but the most suitable is probably in the form of a length of flexible strip contacts evaporated/welded on to a thin flexible sheet which can be incorporated into the layers of the incontinence pad. By using a transistor circuit energised by a dry battery, adequate levels of safety can be readily achieved. Because the flexible contact sensor element is cheap it can be disposable and reclamation from a soiled pad would not be necessary. Further since the sensor element is thin and flexible its accommodation within the incontinence pad would not significantly degrade the shape accommodating properties of the pad. The sensor is conveniently connected to a suitable alarm indicator which it is thought should be visual rather than audible, ie a flashing light.
