Abstract

A flexible container such as a carrier bag, comprises a fabric composed of air-bulked crimped synthetic filament yarns having freely projecting loops and/or bows of variable sizes. The fabric may be coated on one side with a plastics material. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Flexible Container The present invention relates to flexible containers. In a preferred embodiment, a flexible carrier container is provided which is composed of a fabric produced from blast nozzle textured synthetic filament yarns which is coated on its side facing the interior of the container.
It is known from German Offenlegungsschrift No. 27 24 230 to process fabric which is coated on one side and is composed of blast nozzle textured filament yarns into flexible containers and items of luggage, the coated side of the fabric normally facing the interior of the container. According to German Offenlegungsschrift No. 27 24 230, texturing is normally carried out using a steam-driven stuffer box crimping device. The yarn textured in this way possesses an extensive thread closeness, particularly once it has been processed into a fabric.
An object of the invention is to create flexible containers from synthetic filament yarns, and preferably containers whose surfaces have a matt, pleasant, fibrous appearance and a linen-like feel.
According to the present invention, there is provided a flexible container comprising a fabric composed of blast nozzle textured synthetic filament yarns wherein, the filament yarns are air-bulked crimped yarns having freely projecting loops and/or bows of variable sizes.
The production of such crimped yarns is fairly well known. A filament yarn is fed with an excess delivery of about 10 to 20% through a bulking jet which is operated by compressed air, the yarn filaments initially being separated from each other and lying, for example, in loops, snarls or bows, but a certain thread closeness is then achieved again. The freely projecting loops, snarls, bows or the like give the yarn a fibrous-yarn-like appearance.
An apparatus which is suitable for producing the crimped yarns to be used according to the invention is described in the Journal "Chemiefasern/Textil-lndustrie", October 1975, pages 929 and 930.
The filament yarns can be spun from conventional synthetic polymers such ns, for example, polyamide 6 or polyamide 66, polyacrylonitrile, polypropylene or the like. They are preferably composed of a polyester, in particular of polyethylene terephthalate.
Due to use of a fabric having a one-sided coating, it is beneficial to use filament yarns having low shrinkage. After being processed, and therefore in the finished carrier container, the yarns should have a boiling shrinkage, measured after 60 minutes at 1000C, of not more than 0.7% on average and, in particular, a hot air shrinkage measured after 1 5 minutes at 1 900C of not more than 2% on average.
In order to make the filament yarns more'like staple fibre yarns, the crimped yarns can be subjected to a subsequent roughening treatment. The filament yarns then have free projecting fibre ends in addition to loops and yarns.
The invention will be described with reference to the embodiment thereof shown in the accompanying drawing.
The flexible carrier container illustrated-a shopping bag-has the fabric on its external faces 1 while its internal faces 2 are coated. The prefabricated individual parts of the carrier container can have welted rims 3 and be provided with carrying handles 4.
A polyethylene terephthalate yarn having a nominal count of 1200 f 210 dtex with a tensile strength of 32 cN/tex, a breaking elongation of 17%, a hot air shrinkage of 2% and a boiling shrinkage of 0.7%, is a typical crimped yarn for the production of a flexible container according to the invention.
A fabric produced from it is characterised by an attractive fibrous matt surface having a linen-like feel.
The fabrics are generally dyed, printed if desired (transfer printing) and coated on one side with polyvinylchloride (PVC), polyurethane (PU) or AC. The fabrics can optionally be used uncoated if they have a suitably tight setting. Typical fabric structures include: Setting Weight per unit area (Thread/cmJ Weave (g/cm2) 6.8/7 Taffeta about 173 7.5/8 ,, ,, 156 8.5/8.5 ,, ,, 215 8.5/9 ,, ,, 220 9.5/10 ,, ,, 244 10.5/11 ,, ,, 270 11.5/12 " ,, 294 12.5/8.5 ,, ,, 256 .13/10 ,, ,, 288 12/12 p2-2 ,, 300 14/14 p2-2 ,, 350 The coating layer varies between 40 g/cm2 and 700 g/cm2 depending on the type of coating (AC, PU, PVC).
The fabrics can be processed, for example, to form the following flexible carrier containers: suitcases. carrier bags, travelling bags, school satchels, brief cases, shopping bags, purses, handbags, manicure cases, overnight bags, flight bags, sports bags, protective coverings for sporting equipment, for example for tennis rackets or skis; protective coverings for musical instruments, for example for violins, guitars, flutes; protective coverings for binoculars; protective coverings for drawing blocks; pencil cases, writing cases, document files, washbags, clothes bags, trunks.
