Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements Relating to the Making of Art Pictures This invention relates to the making of art pictures which expression includes pictures not only of real life objects and animals, but also abstract designs and creations which may be formed in other medium part from artists paints.
Various kits for making art pictures are already known, such kits including painting by numbers kits and tapestry making kits; but such kits tend to be relatively expensive or the effect achievable in the resulting picture is somewhat limited.
The object of this invention is the manufacture of an art picture which will be pleasing to the eye, yet relatively inexpensive to produce. The picture preferably, but not necessarily, will be produced from a kit.
According to the present invention an art picture is created by sticking over outline workings on a base sheet, lengths of hand knitting yarn.
The base board may be provided with a general coating of adhesive for the sticking of the lengths of yarn and excess of the adhesive may subsequently removed. Where a multi-coloured picture is to be created, then a number of different coloured lengths of yarn would be used. Tha entire picture is preferably comprised of coloured hand knitting yarns. The base board may have a dark e.g. black background, to highlight the coloured yarns.
Preferably the picture is provided in kit form comprising the base sheet with the picture delineation thereon or a sheet to be applied to the base sheet, several supplies of hand knitting yarns of different colours and adhesive for sticking down yarn lengths. There will usually be instructional material, with the kit in written and/or illustrative form or both.
An embodiment of the present invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing of which the single figure illustrates a picture in the course of production in accordance with the present invention.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, this shows a picture in the course of production. The picture is being constructed from a kit in accordance with the invention, and the kit comprises a base sheet 10 in the form of a stiff sheet of cardboard of which the top surface 12 is dark, in this case black. Delineated on this surface as indicated at 14 is a picture illustrating a peacock on the branch of a tree and some leaves of the tree. The kit furthermore includes several small balls 1 6 of yarn of different colours and a tube of adhesive 1 8 for the sticking of lengths of yarn 1 6 over the delineation markings 14 in order to create a picture composed of length of hand knitting yarns. In the drawing the hands of a person creating the picture are shown holding a length 20 of yarn and about to position this length adjacent to already laid lengths 22 as another step in the formation of the picture. The cement in tube 18 is first of all applied to the base sheet 10 and then the lengths of yarn cut from the. ball 1 6 by means of scissors 24, are applied over the adhesive. The adhesive will preferably be of a nature which can be washed over any particular area to which yarns are to be applied and the excess of which can be rubbed off when the adhesive dries. Such an adhesive may be a gum or rubber cement. The surface of the sheet 10 may be treated so that the adhesive can be removed readily from areas which are not to be covered by lengths of yarn such as lengths 20 and 22.
rhe yarn used preferably is double knitting yarn as this provides a most pleasing effect in the finished picture, and furthermore it can be brushed by means of a tasle brush in order to give the surface of the yarn forming part of the picture a furry appearance.
The resulting picture is extremely pleasing to the eyxe, and furthermore the kit can be manufactured extremely cheaply. The delineated picture may be complicated or simple and accordingly it will take a long or a relatively short time to complete the picture depending upon the person who is creating the same. As many different colours of yarn lengths as are required can be used and it may be possible to provide in one kit two or three base sheets 10 each with a different picture delineation thereon.
Claims

2. A picture according to Claim 1 wherein the lengths of yarn include a plurality of lengths each in a colour different from the other or others, 3. A picture according to Claim 2 entirely composed of coloured hand knitting yarns.
4. A picture according to any one of the preceding Claims wherein the base sheet is of dark colour.
5. A kit of parts for making up into an art picture according to any preceding claim comprising a base sheet with outline markings thereon, a plurality of lengths of hand knitting yarn of different colours and a supply of adhesive for sticking the lengths of yarn to the base sheet.
6. A method of creating an art picture comprising the steps of sticking lengths of hand knitting yarn over outline markings on a base sheet.
7. A method according to Claim 6 wherein the lengths of yarn are cut to the required size, 8. A method according to Claim 6 or Claim 7 including the step of applying adhesive to the base sheet at least over the markings.
9. A method according to Claim 8 wherein the adhesive is applied over an area of the sheet and subsequently removed from portions of the area not to be covered by lengths of yarn.
10. An art picture substantially as described with reference to the drawings.
