Abstract

The joint device comprises a unitary hollow sectioned member (16) which may be of 'L' or 'T' shape so that it includes two rectilinear portions 16a, 16b) disposed at an angle to each other, the device being used to secure two items such as boards together with the portions located in rectilinear slots (12a, 14a) formed in adjacent edges of the items. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Joint device This invention relates to a joint device for joining two items together, and is particularly applicabie as a furniture joint. The joint device can assume a number of different forms to enable a handyman with the aid of a saw and possibly a jig to build a variety of furniture items from wood or manufactured boards.
According to one aspect of the invention, there is provided a joint device comprising a unitary hollow sectioned member, the crosssectional shape of the member including two rectilinear portions disposed at an angle to each other, the portions during use of the device being located in rectilinear slots formed in adjacent edges of the two items to be secured together.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figures 1 to 5 are perspective views of different forms of furniture joint according to the invention.
Referring to Fig. 1, the device 10 is a right angled corner joint for securing together two abutting boards 1 2 and 14. The device comprises a unitary hollow member 1 6 of generally L-shaped cross-section including two rectilinear portions 1 6a and 1 6b disposed at right angles to each other.
To form a corner joint, two rectilinear slots 1 2a and 1 4a are first cut, for example by saw, in the boards to a depth determined by the depth of the member 16. The boards are then abutted in the manner shown in Fig. 1 and the device is offered to the boards so that portions 1 6a and 1 6b are aligned with slots 1 2a and 1 2b respectively. The device is then tapped into the position shown in Fig. 2 with portions 1 6a and 1 6b located in their respective slots.
The resulting joint is firm and stable and requires no screwing or glueing. If subsequently, the boards are to be dismantled, it is a simple matter to tap out the device.
If a permanent joint is required, a cross-pin may be inserted through member 1 6 and each board.
To allow for tolerances in assembly and in the boards, the portions 1 6 a and 1 6 b may be provided with internal and external ribs 18.
A modified form of device is shown in Fig.
3 in which the member 1 6 described above has integrated with it a hollow rectangular sectioned member 20 joined to it by means of an integral hinge 22.
This modified device would be used as shown in Fig. 3(1) to form a door to box hinge.
A further form of device is shown in Fig. 4 in which a hollow 'T' sectioned member 24 can be illustrated in Fig. 4(1). In this embodiment, two cuts would be required in one of the boards and one cut in the other board.
The device of Fig. 1 may be further modified by the addition of a rectangular section 26 to one of the legs of member 16. The section 26 may act as a foot or a glide in the manner illustrated in Fig. 5(1).
The above described devices may be formed from metal, or moulded from a suitable plastics material such as polypropylene.
Possibly for decorative reasons, the front face of the above described hollow section members may be filled in with the same material as the rest of the members.
In the event the assembled furniture is to be fixed to a wall, the devices may be provided with an integrally formed fixing bracket.
1. A joint device comprising a unitary hollow sectioned member, the cross-sectional shape of the member including two rectilinear portions disposed at an angle to each other, the portions during use of the device being located in rectilinear slots formed in adjacent edges of the two items to be secured together.
2. The device of Claim 1, wherein said portions are provided with internal and/or external ribs extending therefrom.
3. The device of Claim 1 or 2, wherein the member is generally of L-shaped section with side portions extending generally at right angles to each other.
4. The device of Claim 1, 2 or 3, wherein integrally formed with the first mentioned member is a second hollow sectioned member joined thereto by an integral hinge.
5. The device of any one of Claims 1 to 3, wherein one outer side of the member is provided with a parallelly extending section to act as an external foot or glide.
6. The device of any one of Claims 1 to 3, wherein the member is generally of T-shaped cross-section including two rectilinear portions disposed parallel to each other and one rectilinear portion disposed generally at right angles thereto.
7. An assembly comprising a device according to any one of Claims 1 to 6, and two boards held at an angle to each other by said device, said portions being located in rectilinear slots formed in adjacent adges of the boards and each portion being of length slightly greater than the thickness of the boards.
8. The assembly of Claim 7 as appendant to Claim 4, wherein the assembly is in the form of a box with a lid, said first member securing together two sides of the box at an upper corner thereof and the second member including a rectilinear portion location in a rectilinear slot provided in an edge of the lid.
9. The assembly of Claim 7 as appendant
