Abstract
A plastic drawing instrument for drawing lines, such as a set-square, ruler, curve, produced by means of moulding is characterised in that at least one of its surfaces is made opaque by means of roughening the surface of the mould in which the instrument is moulded to thereby eliminate glare caused by the reflection of light. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Plastic drawing instruments
The present invention relates to plastic drawing instruments for drawing lines, such as set-squares, rulers, curves, etc., produced by means of moulding.
A disadvantage of such drawing instruments is that the glare caused by the reflection of light on their surface causes noticeable disturbance to the vision of the person using them.
The present invention proposes to eliminate this disadvantage. More particularly, the plastic drawing instrument according to the invention is characterised in that it has at least one surface made opaque by means of roughening the surface of the mould in which the instrument is moulded.
The invention will be better understood from the following description, which is given purely by way of example and is therefore non-limiting, of one construction form thereof, with reference to the single Drawing.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a drawing ruler according to the invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse section through part of the ruler shown in Figure 1, on a much larger scale.
Figure 1 shows a drawing ruler with a scale 2, which forthe sake of simplification, is reproduced only in part, on one section of the ruler. The surface 3 of the ruler which is facing the observer is dotted to indicate that it has been made opaque so as not to dazzle the draughtsman with light reflected from it.
In Figure 2 it can be seen that the surface 3 has a series of very small projections 4 which make it rough. This roughening of the surface is obtained by roughening the surface of the mould in which the ruler is moulded. The roughening of the surface of the mould may be accomplished in various ways, for example, by sand-blasting, photo-etching, sparkerosion, etc.
A surface roughened in this way reduces reflection to a minimum since the rays of light striking this surface are reflected in an infinite number of directions and are partly absorbed so that only a minimal part of them is perceived by the person looking at the drawing instrument The draughtsman is not therefore disturbed as he works by the reflexion originating from the instrument which he is using.
Generally, to obtain the desired effect it is sufficient to make the surface opaque on only one side of the drawing instrument. However, if desired, the instrument may be made opaque on the surfaces of both opposing sides and also the edge surfaces.
Although only one construction form of the invention has been described, naturally it is possible to effect numerous variations and modifications without exceeding the scope of the said invention.
Claims (5)
1. A drawing instrument made of plastics material for drawing lines, produced by means of moulding, characterised in that it has at least one surface made opaque by means of roughening the surface of the mould in which the instrument is moulded.
2. An instrument according to Claim 1, characterised in that the roughening of the surface of the mould is obtained by sand-blasting.
3. An instrument according to Claim 1, characterised in that the roughening of the surface of the mould is obtained by photo-etching.
4. An instrument according to Claim 1, characterised in that the roughening of the surface of the mould is obtained by spark erosion.
5. A ruler constructed and arranged substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
