Abstract

A roadside or other gulley pot 1 has a removable dip-tube trap member 4 having a lateral outlet pipes push- fitted in a grommetted hole in the pot wall. The dip tube 4 has a rodding aperture 7 closed by a plug 8 and has a slotted top flange 13 snap-fitted over castellations (Figure 2, not shown) in the pot rim 10. The pot 1, which can be used without the trap member, is preferably of plastics, downwardly tapered for stacking, and provided with external reinforcing flange and ribs. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Gulleys particularly for road drains This invention relates to gulleys, more particularly for use in road drains, and has for its object the provision of a simple construction facilitating the provision of trapped or untrapped gulleyswith savings in expense of manufacture, stocking and transporting.
According to the present invention, a gulley comprises a pot-like body with a circular hole in its side wall, a grommet fitting round the hole, and a trap member having a lateral pipe portion slidable through the hole in the body into sealing engagemenu with the grommet, with the trap member disposed within the pot-like body and in communication therewith through an opening in the trap member disposed intermediate the hole in the body and the bottom of the body.
Thus the trap member with its pipe portion can be made and stored separately from the pot-like body, which preferably diverges upwardly from its bottom, so that similar potlike bodies can be stored and/or transported one inside another, with or without a grommet in position round each hole. Simple separate moulds are required for the body and the trap member, thus saving on tool costs and resulting in a less expensive product. There is also less likelihood of damage whilst in stock or during handling or transporting than with a trapped gulley with an external trap. No welding or complicated assembly is necessary.
However, a fundamental advantage is that the pot-like body can be used without the trap member, to form an untrapped gulley, when required, by inserting a pipe spigot or a pipe adaptor into the hole in the body. In other words, one form of pot-like body can serve to form a trapped gulley, or an untrapped gulley, thus resulting in less investment in production and stocking, as there is no commitmenu to one type or the other until an order is placed.
Other benefits are to be found in use owing to the trap being provided inside the body, namely, that any excavation is less extensive than with an integral external trap, a greater siudge capacity can be afforded without increasing the overall size of the gulley and so less frequent cleaning is required.
Preferably, however, the trap member is provided with a hole with a removable plug opposite to the pipe portion, to afford access when necessary for rodding a drain pipe extending from the pipe portion.
The gulley is preferably formed of plastics, e.g., polypropylene, and set in a concrete bed and surround, an external circumferential flange preferably being provided on the body intermediate the hole in the side wall and the rim of the side wall, to stiffen the body and assist in its location, and a plurality of equispaced flanges preferably extend downwardly from the circumferential flange to below the hole in the side wall. The rim of the side wall may be notched to leave projections over which snaps a slotted flange on the upper outer edge of the trap member or an upward extension thereof, so that the mechanical engagement of the slots with the projections assists in holding the trap member in place in the body with the pipe portion projecting through the grommeted hole, and the trap member is preferably provided with two further flanges, one above and one below the pipe portion, to bear against the inside of the side wall of the gulley body and so provide clearance for the grommet and determine the attitude of the pipe portion with respect to the side wall of the body.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a diagrammatic part-sectional elevation of a gulley in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary section taken from the line 2 - 2 of Figure 1, with the trap member omitted; Figure 3 is a fragmentary plan of part of Figure 2; Figure 4 is a plan of the trap member shown in Figure 1, with the plug omitted; Figure 5 is a section taken from the line 5 - 5 of Figure 4; Figures 6 and 7 are elevations in the directions of the arrows X and Y respectively in Figure 5; and Figure 8 is an enlarged fragmentary section of the grommet indicated in Figure 1.
The gulley shown diagrammatically in Figure 1 comprises a pot-like plastics body 1 with a circular hole 2 (Figure 2) in its side wall, a grommet 3 (see also Figure 8) fitting round the hole, and a plastics trap member 4 (see also Figures 4 to 7) having a lateral pipe portion 5 slidable through the hole 2 in the body 1 into sealing engagement with the grommet, with the trap member disposed within the pot-like body and in communication therewith through an opening 6 (Figure 5) in the trap member disposed intermediate the hole 2 in the body 1 and the bottom of the body.
The pot-like body 1 diverges upwardly from its bottom, so that without their trap members similar pot-like bodies can be stored and/or transported one inside another, with or without a grommet 3 in position round each hole. The pot-like body 1 can be used without the trap member 4, to form an untrapped gulley, when required, by inserting a pipe spigot or a pipe adaptor (not shown) into the hole 2 in the body.
The trap member 4 is provided with a hole 7 with a removable plug 8 opposite to the pipe portion 5, to afford access when necessary for rodding a drain pipe (not shown) extending from the pipe portion.
The body 1 has an external circumferential flange 9 intermediate the hole 2 in the side wall and the rim 10 of the side wall, and a plurality of equispaced flanges 11 (only two shown in Figures 2 and 3) extend downwardly from the flange 9 to below the hole 2. The rim 10 of the side wall is notched to leave projections 12 over which snaps a slotted flange 13 on the upper outer edge of the trap member 4 or an upward extension 14thereofwhen the pipe portion 5 has been pushed through the grommeted hole. The trap member 4 is also provided with two further flanges 15, 16 respectively, above and below the pipe portion 5, to bear against the inside of the side wall of the gulley body 1 and so provide ciearance for the grommet 3 and determine the attitude of the pipe portion 5 with a natural fall from the body.
