Abstract

This invention relates to a hand grip, particularly to a grip for sports implements such as squash rackets and hockey sticks. A laminate is provided in a strip which can be wound onto the handle of the implement. The laminate comprises a towelling material laminated to the one side of the sponge material and an adhesive applied to the other side thereof. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Handle Grips This invention relates to hand grips and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel hand grip particularly, but not necessarily exclusively, for sports equipment such as rackets and the like.
Towelling handgrips for sports equipment are known. The pile on the towelling soon compacts, however, which leaves the grip hard and uncomfortable.
The present invention seeks to overcome this problem.
According to the invention a laminate suitable for a hand grip on a substantially cylindrical object, such as the handle of a sporting implement, comprises a strip of towelling material laminated to one side of a sponge material and an adhesive applied to the other side of the sponge material.
By "substantially cylindrical" we include objects which are true cylinders of circular or ellipsoid cross section and also objects approximating to such a shape and capable of forming a handle.
According to one aspect of the invention the laminate comprises cotton on a nylon base. The sponge material may be open celled and it may be provided with a textile backing to which the adhesive is applied. The cloth or textile backing facilitates the removal of the laminate. The textile may be woven from a suitable polymeric material such as rayon or the like.
The invention includes a method of forming a laminate which comprises the steps of fixing a towelling material to one side of a sponge material and applying an adhesive to the other side thereof.
In the preferred form of the invention a strip of the laminate is wound in helical fashion on to a handle. The abutting edges of the adjacent coils of the strip may be overlaid with a tape which serves to join the edges together.
The invention is further described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a somewhat schematic perspective view, partly in section, of a laminated material according to the invention, and Figure 2 is an illustration of the handle of a squash racket with a hand grip made up of a strip of the laminate shown in Figure 1 applied thereto.
In the drawings a strip 10 comprises an outer layer 12 of towelling and a layer 14 of latex sponge of reasonably high density. The particular towelling shown is a circular knitted, single jersey cotton loop, nylon backed material of 230g per square metre weight. The two layers are joined together by means of a water based acrylic adhesive applied at the interface 1 6 between the two layers 12, 14.
The sponge 14 is provided with a woven rayon backing 1 5 and a layer 1 8 of adhesive is applied thereto. The adhesive 1 8 is used to fix the strip 10 to the handle 20 of a squash racket and the rayon backing provides a strong base for the adhesive 18 so that the strip 10 can be removed again without the sponge tearing. The strip 10 is fixed to the racket by being wound in helical fashion on to the handle 20 so that the edges of each coil abut the edges of an adjacent coil. A strip 22 of cotton fabric adhesive tape is applied over the abutting edges. This measure is of material assistance in ensuring that the strip 10 does not peel off the handle and moreover provides a luxurious feel and distinctive appearance to the hand grip.
The hand grips of the invention have superior perspiration absorption and wear properties. They may be applied to any suitable item such as most sports equipment requiring a hand grip and indeed any device requiring such a grip.
