Abstract

A coupling device for wooden furniture panels comprises a headed bolt (1) having a screw threaded stem (2), a socket member having a transverse recess or aperture (7), and an internally threaded retaining nut (8) housed generally within the aperture (7) with its longitudinal axis generally alignable with that of the transverse aperture. The nut is capable of slight radial movement within its housing but is prevented from freely rotating. The diameter of the aperture or recess is larger than that of the bolt stem thereby allowing free insertion of the bolt stem therein to threadedly engage with its retaining nut. The socket member may have a rectangular cross-section. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A coupling device The present invention relates to a coupling device and more particularly to an improved coupling device for coupling two wood panels such as, for example, a vertical side panel and a horizontal rack panel in modern knockdown furniture.
Many types of coupling device have been presented by the prior art. Figure 7 of the accompanying drawings, illustrates one such type of the coupling device wherein a cylindrical nut member 21 having a screw threaded inner aperture 22 is fixed into a hole 23 formed in and opening to the upper surface of a horizontal panel 24. A bolt 25 is inserted into the inner aperture through a hole 26 in a vertical panel 27 and a hole 28 in the horizontal panel 24 and is screwed into the inner aperture, whereby the panels may be tightly connected.
With such devices, however, it is necessary to correctly align the axis of the bolt with the axis of the aperture of the nut member 21. If some relative displacement between these two axes is generated, it is very difficult for a worker to insert the bolt into the aperture of the nut, and in an extreme case it will not be possible to screw the bolt into the aperture.
Since the higher accuracy required in the case of a metal-working machine is not expected from a wood-working machine, and therefore an error between previously determined positions of the holes in the wooden panels is often generated. Such an error also will be caused in the process of contraction of the furniture parts.
Accordingly, an object of the present invention is to provide a coupling device which is capable of correcting aforementioned error if generated, thereby allowing the easy screwing of a bolt into a nut member.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a coupling device wherein a nut for securing a bolt is mounted in a socket member so as to allow movement of the nut in the radial direction, thereby facilitating insertion of the bolt into the nut.
According to the present invention there is provided a coupling device comprising: a bolt having an externally screw threaded stem and a head formed integrally at one end thereof: a socket member, the body of which is formed with a transverse recess or aperture for receiving the other end of the bolt stem; and an internally threaded retaining nut for said bolt housed generally within said recess or aperture, the longitudinal axis of the nut being generally alignable with the longitudinal axis of the recess or aperture, the nut being capable of slight radial movement within its housing when this is needed in the use of the device, but being prevented from freely rotating within its housing, and the bolt stem being capable of freely entering the recess or aperture to engage threadedly with its retaining nut therein.
The present invention will be further described with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure lisa front view of an embodiment of a socket member of a coupling device according to the present invention; Figure 2 is a sectional view of the socket member shown in Figure 1; Figure 3 is a plan view of the socket member shown in Figure 1; Figure 4 is a sectional view of the coupling device in accordance with the present invention, showing the use of the coupling device in furniture wooden panels; Figure 5 is a perspective view of another embodiment of a socket member of a coupling device in accordance with the present invention;; Figure 6 is a plan view of a third embodiment of socket member of a coupling device in accordance with the present invention. and Figure 7 is a sectional view of a prior art coupling device, showing the use of the device in furniture.
Referring now to Figures 1 to 4, a bolt 1 is provided with a threaded stem 2 and a head 3, the end of the stem having the form of a circular arc.
A socket member 4 is provided with a cylindrical body 5 and a flange 6 integrally formed at one end of the cylindrical body. The body is equiped with a transverse recess or aperture 7 which is provided for the insertion of the bolt stem 2, the diameter of the transverse aperture being larger than that of the stem, so that the bolt stem may be freely inserted into the transverse aperture.
The body of the socket member has a slit 13 which opens to the other end surface of the body and which is substantially square in cross section. A nut 8 having a screw threaded inner aperture 12 for receiving the bolt stem is so arranged so as to prevent free rotation of the nut but to allow slight movement of the nut in the radial direction of the transverse aperture.
A plug 9 is mounted at the bottom end of the slit to retain the nut in the slit.
On the upper surface of the flange 4, a plus-shaped groove 10 and marks 11 showing the direction of the axis of the transverse aperture 7 are formed, the groove 10 being provided for engaging with a known type of driver.
The coupling device may be employed to fasten two wooden panels, for example, a vertical first panel 14 and a horizontal second pane,l 15 (Figure 4).
The socket member 4 is fixed into a recess 16 formed in and opening to the upper surface of the second panel 15. The bolt 1 is inserted into the inner aperture 12 through a hole 17 formed in the first panel and a horizontal hole 18 formed in the second panel. The horizontal hole 18 opens to an end surface of the second panel 15 and into the recess 16. The axes of the horizontal hole 18 and the inner aperture 12 are so positioned as to be alignable with each other. The bolt stem 2, may thus, be screwed into the aperture 12 of the nut located in the socket member 4, thereby tightly connecting the first and the second panels.
It will be understood that, even if some relative displacement shear occurs between the longitudinal axis of the bolt stem 2 and that of the inner aperture 12 of the nut, due to an error in the production of the recess 16 and hole 18, the aforementioned shear may be corrected by movement of the nut. That is, when the bolt stem is inserted into the inner aperture 12 of the nut, the latter moves to a position so as to align the axis of the bolt stem 2 with that of the nut aperture 12, so that the bolt may be easily screwed into the nut.
Another embodiment of the present invention is shown in Figure 5 wherein the socket member comprising a body 5A and a flange 6A are formed, which are square or rectangular in cross section. If desired, the flange 6A may be omitted.
Figure 6 illustrates a third embodiment of a socket member in which, in place of the plus-shape groove 10 shown in the first embodiment (Figure 3), a minus-shaped groove 10A is provided. In this embodiment, the marks 11 in Figure 3 may be omitted by aligning the direction of the groove 1 OA with the transverse aperture 7. The groove is provided for engagement with a known type of driver, whereby the desired position of the socket member may be achieved by rotation of the socket member.
