Abstract

A device is provided for severing sliver during can change as the sliver is filled into spinning cans after leaving a card or drawing frame. The device comprises a nozzle (6) located at the delivery end of drawing-off rolls (3), and linked to a compressed air supply tank through a valve (8). The nozzle is directed at the entry opening of the duct (11) of a rotating sliver guide (4) serving to fill the sliver (12) into a spinning can (10). When the valve (8) operates (during can change) a jet of air from the nozzle (6) impinges on the sliver (12) causing it to be separated into its individual strands, thus facilitating breakage. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Device for severing a ropelike strand of fibres The invention relates to a device for severing a ropelike strand of fibres being filled into spinning cans after leaving a card or drawing frame.
Present-day high-speed spinning frames are equipped with automatic systems for changing filled ans. With continuous delivery of the sliver, the cans are changed as soon as a predetermined length of sliver has been reached. During this operation the sliver trailing over the edge of the can being changed may separate badly thereby making it difficult to fill the following can.
The object of the invention is to alleviate this shortcoming which occurs during can change.
Accordingly this invention provides a device for severing a ropelike strand of fibres being filled into spinning cans aftr leaving a card or a drawing frame comprising a sliver guide arranged to rotate during use, and defining a duct for the passage of sliver therethrough, sliver drawing-off rolls for feeding the sliver to the sliver guide duct, a nozzle having its outlet positioned adjacent the delivery end of the drawing-off rolls, and directed at the entry opening ofthe duct, a supply tankfor compressed air, a connecting pipe between the supply tank and the nozzle, and a valve in the connecting pipe.
The valve is preferably desiged as a solenoid valve, being actuated automatically at can change.
Temporary opening of the valve causes the sliver to be separated into its individual strands at the point where the jet of compressed air impinges upon it, thereby facilitating its breakage.
The invention may be performed in various ways and one example thereof will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawing which is a sectional elevation of a sliverfunnel, drawing-off rolls, sliver guide and a device constructed in accordance with the invention.
In the figure a sliverfunnel 1 is supported in a bbearing plate 2 and the drawing also shows one of the drawing-off rolls 3, a funnel wheel 4 mounted in a bearing 13 and serving as a sliver guide. The funnel wheel is provided with a pulley 14 driven by a belt 15. Located at the delivery end of the drawing-off rolls is a nozzle 6 linked to a compressed-air supply tank, not represented, by a connecting pipe 7 through a solenoid valve 8. The nozzle 6 is directed at the entry opening of a duct 11 in the sliver guide 4 so that the jet of air penetrates the interior of the duct 11.
At the precise moment during can change when the filled can 10 is removed and replaced with the empty can, the solenoid valve 8 is excited temporarily so that a jet of air is released from the nozzle 6 to impinge, within the duct 11, on the sliver 12. The jet of air causes the sliver 12 to be separated into its individual strands at the point of impingement, thus facilitating its breaking.
1. A device for severing a ropelike strand of fibres being filled into spinning cans after leaving a card or a drawing frame comprising a sliver guide arranged to rotate during use, and defining a duct for the passage of sliver therethrough, sliver drawingoff rolls for feeding the sliver to the sliver guide duct, a nozzle having its outlet positioned adjacent the delivery end of the drawing-off rolls, and directed at the entry opening of the duct, a supply tank for compressed air, a connecting pipe between the supply tank and the nozzle, and a valve in the connecting pipe.
2. A device according to claim 1, wherein the valve is connected so as to be actuated automatically at every can change.
3. A device according to claim 1 or claim 2, wherein the valve is a solenoid valve.
4. A device for severing a ropelike strand of fibres substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
