Abstract
The socket comprises a member (1) of insulating material mounted within a cap (2) and provided with a pair of cylindrical bores (10) each containing a helical spring (11) extending to within a respective retractable hollow contact (12) whose inwardly directed end is formed with a flange (13) which prevents it from passing through a tubular portion (9) of a respective terminal (8) for receiving a conductor of a cable. The terminal (8) is provided at its other end with a hole (7) coincident with a hole (6) provided for the passage and riveting of a tubular extension of the terminal 4 having a hole (4') for receiving the conductor. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Socket for an electrical bayonet connector
This invention relates to a socket for an electrical bayonet connector, characterised by the simplicity of its components, as well as the location of the latter, making mass assembly particularly easy.
The invention provides a socket for an electrical bayonet connector, the socket being of the type comprising a member of insulating material suitably held within a cap constituting the exterior body of the socket, wherein the member of insulating material is provided with a pair of cylindrical bores opening at an outwardly directed face of the same, each bore being provided with a respective helical spring extending from within the bore to within a respective retractable hollow contact whose inwardly directed end is formed with a flange which prevents the contact from passing through a tubular portion at one end of part of a respective terminal for receiving a conductor of a cable, which terminal part is provided at its other end with a hole coincident with a hole in the bottom of a respective recess formed in the member of insulating material, which hole is provided for the passage and riveting of a tubular extension integrally formed with a further part of the terminal having a hole for receiving the conductor, said further part being located within the aforementioned recess.
The socket generally consists of the member forming a single block, made from a suitable insulating material, in which are located the terminais and retractable contacts that make possible the electrical connection on fitting of an electrical component, for example a light bulb, thereto. The member is disposed within a cap constituting the exterior body of the socket.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, an embodiment of a socket for a bayonet connector according to the present invention.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is an exploded view of the embodiment in which only one of the terminals is shown, and only one contact of the pair provided in the socket;
Figure 2 is a sectional view of the socket in a plane which passes through one of the contacts; and
Figure 3 is a view of one end of the socket.
Referring to the drawing the socket is formed by a member made of a suitable insulating material, designated by the reference 1, which is fastened within a cap 2, partly shown in broken lines, by any conventional means. The member 1 is provided with two parallel recesses 3 with their open ends opposite to one another. The other end of each recess 3 contains a terminal part 4 having the usual hole 4' designed to receive a conductor of a cable and a tubular extension 5 which extends downwardly and passes through a hole 6 formed in a bottom portion of the recess 3, as well as through another hole 7 formed in one end of a terminal part 8 shaped as a plate and bearing against the bottom portion.The part 8 is integrally provided at its other end with a tubular portion 9, located within a cylindrical bore 10, extending verticaliy upwards within the member 1, in which bore a helical spring 11 is located. The spring 11 bears against a retractable hollow contact 1 2 which passes through the tubular portion 9 and is held within the latter by means of an integral flange 1 3 that projects radially outwardly at the open end of the contact 1 2. Although not shown in the drawing, two such contacts are provided for bearing against respective counter-contacts of a light bulb having a bayonet fitting when that bulb is fitted within the socket.
1. A socket for an electrical bayonet connector, the socket being of the type comprising a member of insulating material suitably held within a cap constituting the exterior body of the socket, wherein the member of insulating material is provided with a pair of cylindrical bores opening at an outwardly directed face of the same, each bore being provided with a respective helical spring extending from within the bore to within a respective retractable hollow contact whose inwardly directed end is formed with a flange which prevents the contact from passing through a tubular portion at one end of part of a respective terminal for receiving a conductor of a cable, which terminal part is provided at its other end with a hole coincident with a hole in the bottom of a respective recess formed in the member of insulating material, which hole is provided for the passage and riveting of a tubular extension integrally formed with a further part of the terminal having a hole for receiving the conductor, said further part being located within the aforementioned recess.
2. A socket for an electrical bayonet connector, which socket is substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
