Abstract
A device for fusion jointing of thermoplastics pipe sections includes fixed clamp means for holding one of the pipe sections and movable clamp means for holding the other. A pressure responsive device is mounted on the fixed clamp means so that an indication of the pressure being applied to the pipe sections being joined together may be given. This pressure does not include a contribution from the force to move the pipe section held by the movable clamp and is therefore more directly useful to the operator.
Description
SPECIFICATION
Device for Joining Plastics Pipe Sections
This invention relates to the joining together of plastics pipe sections, the term pipe sections being intended to include pipe fittings as well as lengths of pipe.
Reference will be made hereinafter to the joining together of pipe sections coaxially, but it should be understood that the invention is applicable to the joining together of pipe sections at an angle of from 0 to 900.
Butt fusion devices are known which are operated pneumatically, hydraulically or mechanically by means of a lever. With such devices one pipe section remains stationary and is held by a fixed clamp means and the other pipe section is located in movable clamp means, the clamp means being mounted on a common frame. A heater element is located between the faces of the pipe sections and the device operated so that the movable clamp means and the heater move until the opposite faces of the heating element contact the pipe faces. After the heating stage the heating element is removed and the movable clamp means moved towards the stationary clamp means until the pipe faces are in contact. The device includes pressure measuring means (for instance, a pressure gauge or a device giving a scale indication against spring pressure) which records the pressure exerted on the movable clamp.However, such pressure measuring means records the total of the fusion pressure and the friction drag pressure involved in moving the pipe sections held by the movable clamp. When several lengths of pipe are to be joined the additional load is considerable.
Accordingly the operator needs to add the additional load to the required jointing pressure in order to operate the device at the correct pressure.
According to the present invention there is provided a device for fusion jointing of thermoplastics pipe sections comprising fixed clamp means to hold a first pipe section and movable clamp means to hold a second pipe section, the fixed clamp means being provided with means responsive to and for indicating the pressure applied to the first pipe section by the section during the fusion jointing process.
Accordingly by locating pressure indicating means on the fixed clamp means it is not necessary to take account of the friction or drag pressure and the procedure is considerably simplified.
Preferably the device is a lever operated machine, for instance a lever with a ratchet mechanism so that a constant pressure can be maintained when the correct pressure has been reached. The fixed clamp means (or indeed the frame itself to which the fixed clamp means is attached) is provided with a pressure responsive device providing a visual indication of the pressure being applied to the face of the pipe section being held by the fixed clamp means.
The pressure responsive device may be any suitable device and may, for instance, be a device utilising a piezoelectric effect. The device may include means for translating the applied load electronically into an easily read signal such as pipe diameter or different coloured indications on illuminated diodes. In the latter case a row of diodes may include green illuminating diodes surrounded on each side by red illuminating diodes, the particular diode which is illuminated depending on the pressure applied, the green diodes being illuminated when the pressure is in the correct range. Such a device is adjustable according to the pipe diameter.
A preferred pressure responsive device allows very small movement of the fixed clamp means relative to another member, for instance the frame of the device. For instance, the fixed clamp means may be attached to the frame by means of disc springs which allow a movement of the order of, say, 20 thousandths of an inch where the butt fusion pressure is of the order of 125 kg. Means are provided for detecting this very small movement of the fixed clamp means and for converting the movement to electrical signals calibrated to provide a visual indication of the pressure being applied to the fixed clamp means.
A preferred arrangement for detecting the movement of the fixed clamp means includes a tuned electrical coil connected to one of the frame and the fixed clamp means and a ferro-magnetic member attached to the other of the frame and the fixed clamp means and located sufficiently close to the coil so that relative movements therebetween causes the frequency of the coil to be altered. Appropriate electronic circuitry is provided to convert the frequency signal to a row of coloured light emitting diodes as mentioned above.
Such a device in accordance with the present invention is shown in the accompanying drawing.
The device includes a frame 1 on which is mounted fixed clamp means 3 for holding a first pipe section 5 and movable clamp means 7 for holding a second pipe section 9. Movable clamp means 7 is movable in a direction towards fixed clamp means 5 by means of a ratchet mechanism 11 which, as shown, is attached to both the movable clamp means 7 and the frame 1.
Fixed clamp means 3 is mounted on the frame 1 via two disc springs 13 and 15 which allow a very small amount of movement of fixed clamp means 3 relative to frame 1. Mounted on frame 1 is a tuned coil (not shown) and mounted closely adjacent thereto but on fixed clamp means 3 is a ferrous pad (not shown). The separation of the coil and the pad may be of the order of +" During the fusion together of the pipe sections 5 and 9, the correct fusion pressure for the specific pipe diameter and the material of the pipes is selected by means of a switch mounted on a control boss (not shown). The ratchet mechanism 11 is operated to bring the pipe sections together, first of all with a heater located inbetween so as to heat the faces of pipe sections 5 and 9 to the appropriate temperature. The heater is then removed and the pipe sections are then brought into direct contact. A visual indication of the pressure being applied is given by a row of coloured light emitting diodes (not shown) which are responsive to the change of frequency in the tuned coil.
Claims (8)
1. A device for fusion jointing of thermoplastics pipe sections comprising fixed clamp means to hold a first pipe section and movable clamp means to hold a second pipe section, the fixed clamp means being provided with means responsive to and for indicating the pressure applied to the first pipe section by the second pipe section during the fusion jointing process.
2. A device according to claim 1 wherein the device is a lever operated machine.
3. A device according to claim 2 wherein the lever is provided with a ratchet mechanism.
4. A device according to any of the preceding claims wherein the fixed clamp means is mounted on a support, the manner of mounting allowing for small relative movement therebetween on application of pressure to the fixed clamp means.
5. A device according to claim 4 wherein the fixed clamp means is mounted on the support via disc springs.
6. A device according to claim 4 or claim 5 wherein an electrical coil is mounted on one of the support and the fixed clamp means and a ferro-magnetic member is mounted on the other of the frame and the fixed clamp means at a position such that the very small relative movement therebetween will alter the frequency of the coil.
7. A device according to claim 1 and substantially as described herein.
8. A device for fusion jointing of thermoplastics pipe sections substantiaily as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawing.
