Abstract

This invention relates to a combination of a pallet base and side walls for retaining goods on the base. The pallet base 10 has at least one slot 13 for each of its sides. The side walls have a projection 16, for each slot 13, projecting below the lower edge of each wall 11 for engaging in its respective slot and for together retaining the wall on the pallet with the wall lying within the perimeter of the pallet. The arrangement is such that the wall can be mounted on the pallet after goods have been loaded on the pallet, within an area defined by the slots, by sliding the wall over the goods. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Pallet and retaining wall combination This invention relates to a combination of a pallet and means for retaining goods on the pallet.
According to the present invention there is provided a combination of a pallet and means for retaining goods on the pallet, the pallet having at least one slot for each of its sides formed in its upper face adjacent its respective side and means for retaining goods on the pallet comprising an open bottomed tubular wall having a projection for each slot projecting below its lower edge for engaging in its respective slot and for together retaining the wall on the pallet with the wall lying within the perimeter of the pallet, the arrangement being such that the wall can be mounted on the pallet after goods have been loaded on the pallet within an area defined by the slots, by sliding the wall over the goods.
The tubular wall may be formed from a blank.
The projections may be constituted by extensions of the tubular wall.
The means for retaining the goods may further comprise a top.
Fastening means may be provided to extend through the pallet and at least one projection to secure the all against removal.
For the purposes of this specification references to the wall lying within the perimeter of the pallet should be taken to include the case in which the upper face of the tubular wall lies flush with the perimeter of the pallet.
Specific embodiments of theinvention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which; Figure 1 is an exploded perspective view of a tubular retaining wall and top and a pallet; Figure2 is a scrap sectional view along the line 2-2 in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a sectional perspective view of a part of an alternative form of pallet/wall combination in an unassembled state; and Figure 4 shows the combination of Figure 3 assembled.
Figure 1 shows a pallet 10 and a goods retaining rectangular wall 11 having closure flaps 12.
The pallet 10 is constructed as a conventional four-way entry wooden pallet except for the fact that it is provided with slots 13 formed in the perspective of the faces of side and end runners 14, 15. The slots extend parallel to the edge of their respective runner and adjacent to that edge. Preferably they extend for two thirds of the length of their respective runner. In Figure 1 the pallet is shown with a substantially open upper face, but, in those cases where the runners are not sufficient to support the articles to be loaded on the pallet the area lying within the slots 13 would be covered by a pallet deck (not shown). The rectangu lartubularwall 11 is formed from a blank and is preferably made of corrugated fibre-board.The wall may be otherwise formed for exaple from plywood sheets hinged together or may comprise a sleeve with metal edged hinged corners to allow the sleeve to be collapsed. The wall is open bottomed and has a projection 16 for each of the pallet slots, each projection 16 projecting below the lower edge of the wall 11 so that the pallet 10 and wall 11 can be assembled together by locating the projection 16 in their respective slots 13, as shown in Figure 2. In this position the wall 11 is held on the pallet 10 by the engagement of the projection 16 in slots 13, such that it lies outside the area of the pallet upper face contained within the slots 13 but within the perimeter of the pallet.
The projection 16 may be made of plywood and attached to the wall by conventional methods such as gluing or stapling or alternatively they may be formed as extensions of the wall, so that the projection 16, wall 11 and top closure flaps 12 are all formed from the same blank.
In use goods are loaded on to the pallet 10 directly or on to the pallet deck (not shown) if the pallet has such a deck, such that all the goods lie within the area defined by the slots 13. The wall 11 is then slid over the goods until its projections 16 locate in their respective slots 13. The top closure flaps are then secured in their closed position and the goods are hence retained on the pallet 10.
The engagement between the projection 16 and slots 13 is sufficientto protect the wall 11 from being knocked off the pallet 10 by any transverse force. If it is desired to make the pallet/wall relatively proof from pilfering, then nails should be knocked through the edges of runners 14, 15, through their associated projection 16 and into the body of the runner.
For use in export trade the pallet and wall need not be manufactured in a manner to permit return after use. For home trade however the pallet and wall may be made collapsible for return. Thus in the case where the wall is nailed to the pallet, the nails are withdrawn to separate the wall from the pallet and the wall can then be collapsed. Other forms of fastenings could also be used. In some circumstances it is not necessary to nail the wall to the pallet and in this case the wall can readily be separated from the pallet to be returned collapsed.
In a further construction see Figures 3 and 4 each slot 13 has an associated L-section resiliently flexible member 17 one limb 18 of which is secured to the upper surface of the pallet adjacent the slot 13 and the other limb 19 of which projects down into and across the slot 13 at an angle of about 110 to the top surface of the pallet. The projection 16 at the bottom edge of the wall 11, which is intergral with the wall 11 in this case, has an aperture 20 into which the lower free end of the L-section member 17 snaps as the projection 16 is forced into the slot 13 past the limb 19 of the member in the slot 13 and the projection 16 is then held against withdrawal from the slot 13 until the limb 19 is released from the aperture 20 (see Figure 4). Each slot 13 has such an L-section member 17 and each projection 16 has an aperture 20 to receive a limb 19 of a respective member 17.
