Abstract
203,797. Bateman, M., Bateman, J., Lee, W. R., and Squire, E. V. June 15, 1922. Bristles, fixing. - A brush comprises one or more plates or discs having means for retaining the bristles in looped bunches, and clips to grip the looped portion of each bunch. In the construction shown in Fig. 2, a plate 1 is provided with integral clips 2 and an integral flange 3, the latter being perforated, notched or slotted to embrace bristle-tufts 4, the loops of which are held by the clips 2. In a modification, the plate mav be of inverted channel section and adapted to hold two rows of tufts. A number of plates may be arranged parallel to each other in a recessed stock, and clamped by a flanged casing of channel section provided with an end wall. In the construction shown in Fig. 6, the stock 13 of the brush is made from sheet metal and tongues 15, preferably formed by being pressed inwardly from the sides of the stock, are adapted to grip looped bristle-tufts passed through perforations or slots in terminal flanges 14. A paint or like brush, Fig. 7, comprises a strip 18 bent to form a ring and provided with inwardlypressed tongues 20 co-operating with perforations in a flange formed on the lower edge of the ring to hold the bristles. The top of the ring is provided with a flange which cuts into and grips the handle when the latter is pulled upwardly through the ring. The stock of a rotary brush may be formed from a number of coaxial plates or discs, one of which is partly shown in Fig. 8. The disc is provided with a peripheral flange 22 perforated to locate bristle-tufts which are held within loops formed on radially-disposed clips 23. Instead of a continuous flange, the edge of the disc may be provided with spaced tongues bent at right-angles to the plane of the disc. Both constructions may be modified by the use of clips integral with the disc and comprising radial strips pressed out and bent to form loops. In a further modification, a number of units, each comprising a clip and a perforated flange, are arranged radially around the disc, on one or both sides. In the construction shown in Fig. 13, the edge of the disc is slotted to form tongues 24 which are perforated and are made to project alternately from the two sides of the disc, and corresponding clips 25 are pressed out and bent, each clip co-operating with two of the tongues 24 to hold a tuft of bristles. This construction may be modified by having only one tongue associated with a clip. A rotary brush may comprise a number of interengaging discs with tongues projecting alternately from either side, the discs being mounted on a hub between a pair of end disc provided with a continuous flange or with tongues bent inwardly. In the construction shown in Fig. 19, the discs are mounted on a wooden hub 29 and clamped between a flange 33 and an endplate 32 by a nut 31 screwed on a spindle 30.
