Abstract
A screwdriver bit 1, which may be attached to a handle 2, has a transverse cross-section which increases towards its tip 6; a screw 3 has a head 4 having a slot 5 whose cross-section increases towards the screw tip. The tip 6 may be outwardly concave at each side. The bit 1 may have an axial key for engagement with the handle 2, or have a squared end for engagement with a chuck of a power drill. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Screwdriver Bits and Screws
The present invention relates to screwdriver bits such as are used for hand-held and poweroperated screwdrivers, and to screws which can be used with the bits.
A conventionalscrewdriver bit comprises a shaft with a blade at one end. Usually the transverse cross-section of the blade reduces towards the blade tip, but I have now found that a different shape of blade can be employed to give better engagement between the bit and a screw.
According to my invention I provide a screwdriver bit having a blade whose transverse cross-section increases towards the blade tip.
The blade of such bits may take various forms, but preferably the transverse cross-section of the blade has a waist. The cross-section will then increase from the waist to the tip and will also increase from the waist back towards the shaft of the bit.
The increase in cross-section towards the tip may be constant, and thus giving a flat-sided portion for engagement with the sides of the slot of a slot-headed screw. As an alternative, the decrease can be non-linear in which case the said portion is preferably outwardly concave.
For hand-held screwdrivers it may be desirable to provide an axial key at the other end of the shaft of the bit so that the bit may be adequately secured to a handle. In a similar manner, for a power-operated bit it may be desirable to square off the shaft at the other end for engagement in the chuck of a drill. The screwdriver bits of the present invention may be used satisfactorily with conventional slot-headed screws, but as a corollary to the invention I also provide novel screws. Thus, according to a further aspect of this invention, I provide a slot-headed screw whereof at least part of the slot is of broader cross-section than the mouth of the slot. Preferably the part of broadest cross-section is at the base of the slot, and preferably the cross-section increases in a constant manner from the mouth to the base. The screws of the present invention may be used satisfactorily with conventional screwdrivers. The present invention will be further illustrated by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings.
The principal view in the drawing shows a screwdriver and a screw which embody the present invention. As can be seen, the driving end of the screwdriver shaft has a waisted blade such that the cross-section increases to the tip. The head of the screw engaged by the screwdriver has an analogously configured slot whose mouth is just broader than the width of the tip of the screwdriver blade. The screw is shown in more detail to the left of the drawing. To the right of the drawing are shown examples of other screwdriver bits which embody the present invention.
