Abstract

A cap for use as a closure of a mouth of a container, e.g. for liquids, is formed in one-piece of moulded plastic material, and has a body 1 which fits the container mouth, a handle 5 and a pouring opening 6. The opening 6 is closed by a flap 7 which is attached to the cap body by a hinge 8 which biasses it into the closed position. The flap 7 is opened by means of a member 9 extending rearwardly of the hinge 8. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A cap for a container The present invention relates to a cap for use as a closure for a mouth of a container, e.g. a container for liquid, the cap permitting pouring of the contents from the container. The invention also relates to a container with a mouth having such a cap fitted thereto.
The practice of packing products in containers entails the additional cost of the packing, on top of that of the product itself. In the case of nonreturnable packings, there is no way of recovering them, while if on the other hand the packing can be recovered there remains the problem of designing or equipping it for economical re-use Another aspect of the packaging of products is the effect that the packing has on the promotion and sale of the product contained in it, which effect can undoubtedly be decisive in determining the preferences of the public.
The cap of the present invention can have an extremely simple construction which makes production of the cap possible at low cost, while in addition it has a wide range of applications after the consumption of the product packed in the container to which the cap is fitted.
According to the invention there is provided a cap for use as a closure for a mouth of a container, the cap having a moulded plastics material body and a handle projecting laterally from the body, the body having means for coupling to the container mouth and a pouring orifice for dispensing of the contents of the container through the cap, the pouring orifice being closed by a flap which is formed in one piece with the cap body and hingedly connected to the cap body at a hinge line so as to be biassed into the closed position, there being a memberformed in one piece with the flap extending rearwardly from the hinge line with respect to the cap so as to be movable to open the flap to allow pouring.
The cap may include a closure member e.g. of conventional type which is fitted to close the mouth of the bottle to which the cap is fitted, with the object of ensuring tightness until the contents are consumed. This may for example be a rupturable closure member.
An embodiment of the present invention is described below by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure lisa view in perspective of the cap embodying the invention fitted to a bottle; Figure 2 is a longitudinal section of the cap separated from the bottle, with the closure removed, and with the pourer open; and Figure 3 is a similar view to Figure 2, showing the cap in the closed position, and with the closure in place.
The cap illustrated consists of a moulded onepiece body of plastics material having a certain degree of rigidity, and comprising the actual cap 1 which has internal projections 2 for screwthread coupling around the neck 3 of a conventional bottle 4.
From the side of the body 1 a handle 5 projects. At the top the cap 1 is provided with a pouring spout 6, which is normally closed by means of a flap 7 which extends from the cap 1 at a weakened line 8 forming a hinge. This flap 7 extends rearwardly from the hinge as an operating lever 9.
The cap is completed by a flat closure 10 intended to fit into the mouth of the bottle and to ensure tight closure until consumption of the original contents of the bottle.
The first advantage of the cap illustrated is its one-piece construction, which means that it can be produced by moulding in a suitable plastics material at low cost. Consequently, the fitting of this cap to a bottle containing a product does not entail a substantial increase of the total cost in comparison with other, conventional caps.
Another possible advantage is that the cap illustrated makes it possible for the bottle or container to which it is fitted to be converted into a jug having a pourer permitting considerable control of the pouring rate, by means of the flap 7 articulated at 8, which tends to remain elastically closed on the pourer 7 and which is operated by the lever 9.
1. A cap for use as a closure for a mouth of a container, the cap having a moulded plastics material body and a handle projecting laterally from the body, the body having means for coupling to the container mouth and a pouring orifice for dispensing of the contents of the container through the cap, the pouring orifice being closed by a flap which is formed in one piece with the cap body and hingedly connected to the cap body at a hinge line so as to be biassed into the closed position, there being a member formed in one piece with the flap extending rearwardly from the hinge line with respect to the cap so as to be movable to open the flap to allow pouring.
2. A cap according to claim 1 wherein the handle is also formed in one piece with the cap body.
3. A cap for use as a container closure substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
4. A container having a mouth with a cap according to any one of claims 1 to 3 fitted on the mouth.
