Abstract

A box trailer, e.g. a trailer tent, has a body 12 which is demountable so that the chassis 10 can be used for other purposes while the body is in use for camping and the like. The body is releasably secured to the chassis and can slide off, and onto, the chassis over the rear end thereof. Adjustable legs 14 are provided at the end of the body, which, when the body is in position on the chassis, are adjacent the rear end of the chassis. After the body has been removed from the chassis, the legs are collapsed to lower the body to the ground. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Demountable box trailer This invention relates to a demountable box trailer.
Box trailers are well known vehicles which comprise a wheeled chassis upon which a body having the form of a large box is permanently secured. There is a special type of box trailer known as a trailer tent in which the box has a hinged lid which opens to form, with the interior base of the box, a floor for a tent. The tent itself is accommodated in the box and is frequently adapted to be erected or part erected when the lids of the box are opened.
Trailer tents are, however, relatively expensive. Moreover when they are in use as a tent the trailer part of the assembly must of necessity remain idle and cannot be used.
According to the present invention there is provided a demountable box trailer comprising a wheeled chassis, a body in the form of a box, means for releasably securing the body on the chassis, the body being adapted to slide on and off the chassis from the rear end thereof and adjustable legs provided on the body at or adjacent the end thereof which end is situated adjacent the rear end of the chassis when the box is mounted on the chassis.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows in perspective, the trailer with the box in position on the chassis; Figure 2 illustrates the separation of box from chassis; Figure 3 shows the box fully lowered on the ground; and Figure 4 shows the box with the lid open.
Referring to the drawing the trailer comprises a wheeled chassis 10 and a body in the form of a box 1 2 releasably secured to the chassis by, for example a bolt, catch or other like means (not shown). At the rear end of the box adjustable legs 14 are provided.
In order to remove the box from the chassis the legs 14 are lowered to the ground as shown in Fig. 1. The means securing the box to the chassis are released and the chassis is then withdrawn from under the box as illustrated in Fig. 2. As the chassis is moved in the direction of the arrow 1 6 the box slides on the chassis the guide wheel 1 5 running along the main chassis member, until arrested by the catchment device 17, until its front end 1 8 rests on the ground. The box is then completely lowered to the ground as shown in Fig. 3 by collapsing the legs 14.
In order to provide the base of a frame tent the box may be provided with hinged lids 20 which can be opened as illustrated in Fig. 4 and supported in a horizontal plane by further adjustable legs 22. A frame tent can be erected over the open box so that the open lids 20 provide seats and/or beds therein.
To remount the box on the chassis the steps described above are carried out in the reverse sequence.
1. A demountable box trailer comprising a wheeled chassis, a body in the form of a box, means for releasable securing the body on the chassis, the body being adapted to slide on and off the chassis from the rear end thereof and adjustable legs provided on the body at or adjacent the end thereof which end is situated adjacent the rear end of the chassis when the box is mounted on the chassis.
2. A demountable box trailer as claimed in claim 1 wherein guide means are provided on the body co-operable with the chassis to control the sliding movement of the body on the chassis.
3. A demountabie box trailer as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the guide means is provided at the end of the body remote from the adjustable legs.
4. A demountable box trailer as claimed in Claim 2 or Claim 3, wherein catchment means is provided on the chassis for arresting the sliding movement of the body.
5. A demountable box trailer as claimed in Claim 4 wherein the catchment means is adapted to co-operate with the guide means in order to arrest the sliding movement of the body.
6. A demountable box trailer as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the body is provided with at least one hinged lid.
7. A demountable box trailer as claimed in Claim 6, wherein the or each lid is provided with at least one adjustable leg.
8. A demountable box trailer substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawing.
