Abstract

A bag, particularly for containing polythene bags or sheets, comprises superimposed layers of material which are perforated (12) adjacent one edge so as to form a tear-off portion (14) extending part way along the edge. Where polythene bags are to be stored in the bag, they are inserted as a stack (9) which is folded in half with the fold adjacent the tear-off portion (14) so that when the tear-off portion is removed to leave an aperture, a user can insert a hand through the aperture, grip the outermost bag each side of the fold and draw the bag through the aperture. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION An improved bag The invention relates to an improved bag and is particularly but not exclusively concerned with a bag for containing articles such as polythene bags or sheets.
When packing polythene bages in an outer bag for delivery to a customer, the polythene bags are usually stacked one upon the other and the outer bag is then held closed by stitching or other suitable means. When the bags arrive at their destination, the customer either removes the entire stack from the outer bag for use, or rips open the outer bag in a random manner so that the polythene bags can be taken as needed. It is well known that a stack of polythene bags is extremely difficult to handle because of the low friction between bags in the stack. Therefore, customers often preferto leave the stack in the outer bag. However where the outer bag is torn open in a random manner and the bags taken as needed, several polythene bags are often withdrawn simultaneously by the customer even when the intention was to withdraw only one.
An object of the invention is to provide an improved bag which can be used for the storage of articles such as polythene bags.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided a bag comprising superimposed layers of material which are perforated adjacent one edge so as to form a tear off portion extending part-way along the edge. Removal of the tear-off portion creates an aperture in the bag through which contents can be withdrawn.
Preferably, the bag is of a gussetted type and the tear-off portion is formed in a gussetted edge of the bag. The perforations preferably extend beyond the inner extremity of the gusset so that the entire section of gusset within the area bounded by the perforations forms part of the tear-off portion.
According to another aspect of the invention, there is provided a storage bag comprising superimposed layers of material which are perforated adjacent one edge so as to form a tear-off portion extending part-way along the edge, and a stack of bags, sheets or the like in the storage bag, said stack being folded so that the fold line is adjacent the tear-off portion.
A bag in accordance with the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of one form of bag in accordance with the invention, Figure 2 is a scrap view of part of the bag shown in Figure 1, and Figure 3 is a further view of part of the bag shown in Figure 1 containing a folded stack of polythene bags.
The bag is formed from paper, polythene or like sheet material and is formed with gussets 10, 11 along its edges. One end of the bag is closed by stitching 8 or other suitable means and the other end is open to receive articles such as a stack of polythene bags 9 as shown in Figure 3.
The bag is perforated as indicated at 12 to form a tear-off portion 14. The perforations are formed with the bag flat and extend through all the superimposed layers of bag material. As shown in Figure 2, the perforations (indicated at 13) which extend parallel with the adjacent edge of the bag are spaced inwardly from the inner edge ofthe gusset 10, preferably by a distance of about 0.10 inches. This arrangement ensures that a complete section of the gusset will be torn away when the tear-off portion 14 is removed.
The open end of the bag is normally closed by stitching or other means when articles such as the bags 9 have been inserted. Where the stack of bags is folded as shown in Figure 3 with the line of fold 15 adjacent the gusset 10, removal of the portion 14 renders the bags easily accessible. To remove a bag, the user simply inserts a hand through the aperture formed by removing the portion 14and grips the outermost bag each side of the fold 15. The bag is then easily withdrawn through the aperture. In this way it is easy to withdraw bags one at a time and the remaining polythene bags in the stack stay tidy in the bag.
Although the invention is described with particular reference to a gussetted bag, it is envisaged that non-gussetted bags could be perforated in the same way to provide a tear-off portion. The bag material may comprise several plies of paper or may be made of plastics sheet material.
If desired, the tear-off portion may be formed in an end of the bag and the contents arranged accordingly.
1. A bag comprising superimposed layers of material which are perforated adjacent one edge of the bag so as to form a tear-off portion extending part way along the edge.
2. A bag according to Claim 1, in which the superimposed layers include a gusset along said one edge which is also formed with perforations to form part of the tear-off portion.
3. A bag according to Claim 2, in which the perforations are formed so that each superimposed layer includes a line of perforations extending inwardly beyond the innermost edge of the gusset and alongside said one edge of the bag so that a complete section of the gusset is bounded by the perforations so as to form part of the tear-off portion.
4. A bag according to Claim 3, in which the line of perforations extending alongside said one edge is parallel with said one edge.
5. A bag according to any preceding claim, containing a stack of bags, sheets or like articles, said stack being folded so that the fold is adjacent the tear-off portion to enable the article to be withdrawn through an aperture formed by removal of the tear-off portion buy a user inserting a hand through the aperture, gripping the outermost article each side of the fold and drawing the article out of the aperture.
6. A bag according to Claim 5, in which the fold is substantially parallel with said one edge of the bag in which the tear-off portion is formed.
