Abstract
203,510. Siemens Bros. & Co., Ltd., and Riber, C. R. Aug. 24, 1922. Soldering-irons. - In an electric soldering- iron, the heating element runs between ribs of the body to be heated, the element being wholly within the exterior surface bounding the ribs. A high-resistance heating coil 8 is carried round a double-helical groove of square section in a body 1 of copper, aluminium &c. which may be shaped at the front end to form the bit or may be drilled to receive a detachable bit 2. The coil is electrically insulated from the body 1 by a layer of thin insulating material such as mica, by a coating of hard insulating enamel, or by a strip of insulation wound on the bottom of the groove, the sides of which are insulated by washers. The body is surrounded by an asbestos heat-insulating cover 20 and is inserted in and secured by screws to a metal casing 4 to which the handle 7 is fixed. The ends of the coil pass through holes in a slate washer 13 pinned to the body 1, and are wound round the ends of the leading in wires 11, 12, being gripped in terminals 9, 10, which are insulated from each other and from the screw 15 which secures them to the body 1. A double heating coil may be used in which case a four start helical groove is formed in the body.
