A watertight doll having a body member 10, ahead 11 and limbs 12, the head 11 and limbs 12 each being connected to the body 10 by socket type connections 13, 14 which comprise an opening 15 which is closed at the inner end by a wall portion 16 which defines inwardly of the opening 15 a closed chamber 17 in which is received a head portion 19 secured to a recessed portion 18 which is received in the opening 15, the connections 13, 14 being watertight and preventing water entering the body and head 11 when the doll is immersed in water. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Watertight toy doll
This invention relates to a childs toy provided with parts, such as a head portion and/or limbs, movably connected to a body portion, and particularly, but not exclusively, to a doll.
Dolls are known which comprise a hollow body portion formed of a plastics material, the body portion having openings therein to receive an end connecting portion of a limb or head. Dolls are also known which have a hollow head portion having an opening therein to receive a connecting portion provided on a body portion. A disadvantage of such constructions is that if the doll is placed in water the water can enter the body portion and/or head through the interconnection between a limb and the body portion or through the interconnection between the body portion and the head. In order to drain the water from the body portion or the head it is necessary to remove a limb or the head and constant removal and replacement of a limb or head creates excessive wear on the interconnection and can result in the limb or head becoming incapable of being securely held on the body.
According to the present invention there is provided a childs toy having a hollow member and a member connected to the hollow member by a socket type connection, said socket type connection comprising on the hollow member an opening which is closed on the inside of the hollow member by a wall portion which defines inwardly of the opening a closed chamber, and on said member connected to the hollow member a connecting part consisting of a recessed portion which is received in said opening and a head portion which is received in said closed chamber and engages behind the portion of the hollow member in which the opening is provided.
The hollow member can comprise a body portion of the toy and said member connected to the hollow member comprises a limb.
The hollow member may comprise a head portion and said member connected to the hollow member comprises a body portion.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of an example, in which the single figure is a longitudinal section through a toy doll according to the present invention.
The doll shown in the accompanying drawing has a hollow body portion 10, a hollow head portion 11 and limbs 1 2. The parts are formed of a soft pliable plastics material.
The head portion 11 is connected to the body portion 10 by a socket type connection 1 3 and the limbs 1 2 are connected to the body portion 10 by socket type connections 14. The connections 13 and 14 are similar.
The connections 14 each comprise an opening 1 5 formed in the body portion 10. The opening 1 5 is circular in shape and is closed on the inside of the body portion 10 by a wall portion 1 6 which defines with the wall of the body portion 10 a closed chamber 1 7 inwardly of the opening 1 5. Each limb 1 2 is provided at one end with a recessed portion 1 8 whose diameter is substantially equal to that of the opening 1 5 and is received in said opening 15, and with a head portion 1 9 whose diameter is greater than that of the opening 1 5. The head portion 1 5 is received in the chamber 1 7 and engages behind the portion of the body 10 provided with the opening 15.
In the connection 1 3 the recessed portion 1 8 and the head portion 1 9 are formed on the body portion 10 and the opening 1 5 and wall portion 1 6 are provided on the head 11.
It will be appreciated that the connections 1 3 and 14 enable the head 11 and limbs 12 to be rotated relative to the body portion 10.
The head 11 is provided with hair 20 rooted to a member 21 which is secured to the head 11 by an adhesive. Rooting the hair 20 to the member 21 instead of directly to the head portion 11 ensures that the interior of the head portion 11 remains waterproof.
The connections 1 3 and 1 4 are watertight and if the doll is immersed in water then no water can enter the interior of the body portion 10 or head portion 11.
Even though the present invention has been specifically described with reference to a doll it will be appreciated that the invention can be applied to any other form of toy having a hollow body and/or hollow head.
The head 11 has been described as having rooted hair 20 but alternatively the head can be coloured to assimulate hair.
The hollow body 10, head 11 and limbs can be sealed by plugs 22.
1. A childs toy having a hollow member and a member connected to the hollow member by a socket type connection, said socket type connection comprising on the hollow member an opening which is closed on the inside of the hollow member by a wall portion which defines inwardly of the opening a closed chamber, and on said member connected to the hollow member a connecting part consisting of a recessed portion which is received in said opening and a head portion which is received in said closed chamber and engages behind the portion of the hollow member in which the opening is provided.
2. A childs toy as claimed in claim 1, in which the hollow member comprises a body portion of the toy and said member connected to the hollow member comprises a limb.
3. A childs toy as claimed in claim 1 in which the hollow member comprises a head portion and said member connected to the hollow member comprises a body portion.
