Abstract

203,497. Hilditch, T. P., Wheaton, H. J., and Crosfield & Sons, Ltd., J. Aug. 14, 1922. Purifying liquids.-In a process for regenerating base-exchanging compounds used for softening water, the regenerating solution is divided into, and employed in, portions, the preliminary portion or portions being solution which has been partly exhausted in a previous regeneration, and the final portion consisting of fresh unused solution, which after use is carried off and employed as tha first portion in a subsequent regeneration. Fig. 1 shows one form of apparatus for carrying out the process, the water to be softened being admitted from the pipe A and distributor a<2> to the vessel B, and being discharged from the pipes D, E after passage through the base-exchanging compound C. When regenerating becomes necessary, partially exhausted salt solution contained in the tank F is passed upwardly through the mass C, displacing water to waste through the pipe H. A fresh salt solution is now prepared in the tank F and is run into the vessel B, displacing the first portion to waste. Finally the partially exhausted solution is forced back to the tank F for re-use by the pressure of untreated water, and the mass C is washed until water flowing to waste through the pipe G is free of salt, when the apparatus is again ready for softening purposes. Two tanks F, one for partially exhausted solution, and one for fresh salt solution, may be employed, and when the solution is to be further subdivided, additional tanks F may be provided. Specifications 4188/13, 120,293, and 120,294 are referred to.
