Abstract

203,471. Williams, L. G. Oct. 10, 1922. Motor vehicle head lamps. - An incandescent lamp bulb for motor - vehicle headlights and the like has substantially one half of its area covered with a reflecting substance and, in addition, with a substance which absorbs red rays and is so positioned as to filter the light in a direction along the normal line of sight ahead of the lamp. The lamp shown has a portion of its lower surface c covered with a substance such as mercury or silver which cooperates with the upper part of the paraboloid reflector to throw the emergent light outwards and downwards without glare. A small coating b of varnish or pigment having blue as its base absorbs red rays in directions ahead of the light source d, correct focusing of which is effected by means of a thumb-screw f. A small transparent gap may be left in the reflecting substance or between the blue and reflecting coatings to allow a small beam of unfiltered light to fall on the road near the lamp.
