Abstract

A gear shift mechanism fore change-speed gearbox is operable by a gear lever 8, and includes two juxtaposed shift forks 6A, 6B and a mechanism for inhibiting simultaneous actuation of the shift forks. The gear lever is selectively engaged with one of the recesses 6a, 6b in either shift fork in order to effect gear changing. These recesses are mutually opposed, when in the neutral position of the mechanism, and have a common zone 10 which bridges the recesses in the region of the bottoms of the recesses and which is so shaped as to prevent rocking of the lever, when the latter is engaged therewith, to select one of the recesses 6a, 6b. A spring 12 urges the gear lever into engagement with the common zone 10 when the shift forks are in the neutral position. In order to shift the gear lever into engagement with only one of the shift fork recesses 6a or 6b, it is first necessary to lift the gear lever from the common zone 10 against the action of the spring 12. Hence, when the shift mechanism is in neutral and the gear lever is engaged with the common zone, accidental or unintentional actuation of the lever is inhibited. <IMAGE>
