Abstract

For displaying items of jewellery, a display board comprises a board portion, for example a sheet of foam plastics material faced with velvet, having cut-outs filled with inserts which have a different surface finish from the board portion. The pieces removed to form the cut-outs may be used as the inserts in similar cut-outs in a board with a different surface finish. Alternatively, where a board has different surface finishes on opposite sides, a piece removed can be used as an insert in the same board, being reversed before insertion as the insert.

Description

SPECIFICATION Display board This invention relates to display boards, especially display boards for displaying items of jewellery.
According to the invention a display board comprises a board portion having a first surface finish on a front face and having a cutout formed in it filled with an insert having a second surface finish, different from said first surface finish, on its front face. The display board may have a plurality of substantially identical cut-outs formed in it, each cut-out being filled with an insert. In one preferred form, said board portion comprises a sheet of a plastics foam material and a facing material, adhered to the sheet, providing said first surface finish.
The invention also provides a method of making a display board in which a cut-out is formed in a board portion, and the piece of board portion so removed is used as an insert to fill the same or a similar cut-out in said board portion, or to fill a similar cut-out in a similar board portion, the insert having a surface finish on its front face different from the surface finish on the front face of the surrounding board portion. Conveniently the cut-outs and inserts can be formed using the same tool, so that the inserts are a close fit in the cut-outs.In a preferred method, similar cut-outs are formed with the same tool in two board portions having different surface finishes on their front faces, and the or each piece so removed from each board portion is used as an insert to fill a cut-out in the other board portion; in this way there are obtained two display boards with contrasting inserts and no waste material. Alternatively, cut-outs may be formed in a board portion which has different surface finishes on its front and back faces, the pieces so removed being inverted before replacement as inserts.
In a typical example, both the board portion and the inserts of the display board are formed from sheet plastics foam material, for example " Plastazote", with a facing material, for example velvet, stuck to it. Articles can be mounted on the inserts by means of apertures or slits formed therein. A frame or edging material may be provided around the display board to finish the edges.
It will be appreciated that an attractive form of display board can be provided, on which individual articles can be mounted against a local background, and which can be made with any desired shape and layout of inserts and surface finishes to suit the articles concerned.
1. A display board comprising a board portion having a first surface finish on a front face and having a second surface finish, different from said first surface finish, on its front face.
2. A display board according to claim 1 in which the display board has a plurality of substantially identical cut-outs formed in it, each cut-out being filled with an insert.
3. A display board according to either one of claims 1 and 2 in which said board portion comprises a sheet of a plastics foam material and a facing material, adhered to said sheet, providing said first surface finish.
4. A method of making a display board in which a cut-out is formed in a board portion, and the piece of board portion so removed is used as an insert to fill the same or a similar cut-out in said board portion, or to fill a similar cut-out in a similar board portion, the insert having a surface finish on its front face different from the surface finish on the front face of the surrounding board portion.
5. A method according to claim 4 in which cut-outs are formed with the same tool in two board portions having different surface finishes on their front faces, and the or each piece so removed from each board portion is used as an insert to fill a cut-out in the other board portion.
6. A method according to either one of claims 4 and 5 in which the or each board portion comprises a sheet of a plastics foam material and a facing material, adhered to the sheet, providing the surface finish on the front face of the board portion.
7. A display board substantially as hereinbefore described.
8. A method of making a display board substantially as hereinbefore described.
