Abstract

A pressure vessel having a bung hole outlet 13 with a collar 11 therein with the inner surface of the outlet and outer surface of the collar profiled to resist blow-out of the collar or fracture at the junction of the outlet and collar. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Pressure vessel This invention relates to vessels for containing fluids at high pressure, such as cask-like vessel of aluminium or aluminium alloy for containing liquid petroleum gas.
In the conventional method of manufacture the vessel has an inlet/outlet aperture in which an internally threaded collar is secured by welding. The weld is made around the lower portion of the collar and tests have shown that metal fatigue occurs at the weld after a number of cycles of use below a desideratum.
The object of the invention is to provide a pressure vessel having a bung hole collar, in which the possibility of the collar beocming detached from the outlet is minimised and in which the vessel complies with set safety standards.
According to this invention there is provided a cask primarily for containing gases at high pressure, said cask having a bung hole outlet which is out-swaged to provide an upstanding sleeve and a collar having a flared or flanged portion at its lower end and profiled to fit into the said outlet the collar being welded to the sleeve at the upper extremities.
Thus the outlet can comprise a substantially cylindrical portion merging to an outwardly flared lower portion the collar being profiled in accordance therewith.
The arrangement is such that pressure within the vessel forces the flared orflanged portion against the vessel surface so that the weld is substantially relieved of load due to the pressure.
Reference will now be made to the accompanying drawings.
In Figure 1, one conventional form of bung hole outlet is illustrated. The cask 10 is formed with an aperture in which a collar 11 is secured by a welding 12. The lower surface of the collar is substantially co-planar with the inner surface of the cask.
Figure 2 shows another conventional arrangement, generally similarto Figure 1, but the collar 11 has a radially extending flange 1 the edge of which is welded at 12a to the adjacent aperture edge.
Referring now to Figure 3, the cask outlet is out-swaged at 13, merging with the upper cask surface by curvilinear portions 14. The collar 11 is profiled to engage in the outlet so formed and has a lower portion 1 ib which is flared so as to bear on the inner cask surface below the curvilinear portions.
The collar is welded at 1 2b to the top of the out-swaged portion.
As an example, aluminium casks or pressure vessels to contain liquid petroleum gas at maximum working pressure of 450 1 b/in2 should withstand 10,000 cycles of test at 1.5 times working pressure.
Tests have shown that casks manufactured according to this invention are capable of well exceeding the required cyclic test.
It will be understood that the casks are manufactured from welded up sections, the collar being inserted from below the bung hole.
1. A cask primarily for containing gases at high pressure, said cask having a bung hole outlet which is out-swaged to provide an uptstanding sleeve and a collar having a flared or flanged portion at its lower end and profiled to fit into the said outlet the collar being welded to the sleeve at the upper extremities.
2. A cask as claimed in claim 1, wherein the outlet comprises a substantially cylindrical portion merging to an outwardly flared lower portion the collar being profiled in accordance therewith.
3. A cask primarily for containing a liquified gas under pressure, substantially as herein described with reference to Figure 3 of the accompanying drawings.
