Abstract
The invention relates to apparatus comprising an object and a substrate which are releasably securable together by co-operable fastening means, there being a key operated lock (captive in a mounting 4 and not shown) which locks one of the fastening means to prevent disengagement of those means when those means co-operate, and in this way the object and substrate are securely locked together. Preferably a turnbolt, Fig. 4, enters a hole 9 and a groove 10 in the turnbolt engages an S-spring (not shown) extending between bosses 7, 8 of a housing 1 secured to a platform for receiving a motor-cycle pannier (not shown). A bolt of the lock in mounting 4 may then engage a bore 12 in the turnbolt to prevent it from turning. The lock requires a key to allow the bolt to withdraw from the bore 12. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Apparatus comprising an object and a substrate
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The invention relates to an object and a substrate, particularly a pannier and a platform for carrying it, the object being releasably securable to the substrate.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
In apparatus such as this, there is a disadvantage that the object can be relatively easily removable by unauthorised persons and stolen, or the object and substrate can accidentally part when they should be secured together. This may occur if the substrate is on or part of a vehicle such as a motor cycle, when vibration may cause the object to become unsecurely mounted on the substrate.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
It is accordingly an object of the invention to seek to mitigate these disadvantages of the prior constructions.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided apparatus comprising an object which is releasably securable to a substrate, the object and the substrate having cooperable fastening means, characterised by a key operable lock which has means for preventing disengagement of the fastening means when those means co-operate to anchor the object of the substrate.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a vehicle such as a motor-cycle and apparatus as hereinbefore defined.
The invention thus makes it possible to secure a pannier to a platform of a vehicle such that it cannot be easily removed by unauthorised persons.
The fastening means of the object may be a turnable preferably manually turnable, pin and the means of the lock may be a bolt selectively operable to prevent turning of the pin.
This provides a relatively simple construction which nevertheless provides a firm locking of the object and substrate.
The pin may have a bore, preferably a through bore, which may have an axis substantially at right angles to the axis of turning of the pin. This construction provides for a relatively simple means of engaging the bolt with the pin.
Apparatus embodying the invention is hereinafter described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a longitudinal sectional view of a housing;
Figure 2 shows a top plan view of thehousing;
Figure 3 shows an underneath plan view of the housing; and
Figure 4 shows side elevational view of a turntable pin.
Referring to the drawings, Figs. 1 to 3 show a housing 1 forming or forming part of, a substrate in the form of a platform or tray of a vehicle such as a motor cycle to which a pannier is to be anchored. The housing 1 is a channel shaped member, a left hand flange 2 as viewed in Figs. 1 and 2 being for securing the housing 1 to the vehicle and a right hand flange 3 (as viewed in Figs. 1 and 2) having a mounting 4 for a cylindrical key-operated plunger lock (not shown). The right hand web of the member 1 has a hole 5 through which a bolt of the lock can pass to engage a manually turnable pin 6 (Fig. 4) of a pannier.
The underside of the web of the member has two bosses 7 and 8 between which is secured an S-spring (not shown). There is a hole 9 through the web, between the bosses 7 and 8. The pin 6 is hollowed out along its axis of rotation and an oblique cam-slot 10 is cut into it.
The pin 6 also has, between the blind end of the cam-slot and a wing 11 to assist in manual turning, a through bore 1 2 large enough to receive the bolt of the lock and extending substantially at right angles to the axis of turning of the pin. The spring and cam-slot provide co-operable fastened means of the tray and pannier.
In use of the apparatus to anchor a pannier to the tray, the pin 6 is inserted through the hole 9 and is turned until the spring enters the cam-slot 1 0. The pin is then turned so that the web of the S-spring rides up the slot 10 to the blind end, where it lodges in an enlargement. The spring holds the pin under tension, but the pin can nevertheless be turned to unseat the pannier. To obviate this, the barrel of the plunger lock (which is of a known type) is pushed into the mounting 4 so that the bolt it carries projects through the hole 5 and engages in the bore 1 2 of the pin 6. The act of pushing the barrel of the plunger lock automatically locks it, so that the pin 6 cannot be turned for removing the pannier.
The bolt is withdrawn from the bore 1 2 by unlocking the lock with a key. On operation by the key, the barrel automatically retracts partially out of the mounting 4 in a direction away from the pin and far enough for the bolt to be withdrawn from the bore 1 2. The barrel is otherwise captive in the mounting 4.
It will be understood that the apparatus discribed can be used for locking other objects, other than panniers and trays.
