Abstract
The present invention provides a neutraliser for use in connection with permanent waving preparations, comprising a solution of an alkali metal bromate as oxidising agent, together with an aerosol propellant and optionally additionally comprising a foam-producing agent and/or a hair conditioning agent and/or an ingredient to control the pH value and/or a perfume.
Description
SPECIFICATION
Neutraliser for Use in Connection with
Permanent Waving Preparation
The present invention is concerned with a neutraliser for use in connection with permanent waving preparations.
For the permanent waving of hair, a waving lotion is first applied to the hair, the hair is then given the desired shape or form and then a socalled neutraliser is applied.
The waving lotions conventionally used for this purpose usually coantain thioglycollic acid in the form of an ammonium or amine salt, together with some free ammonia. The lotion is usually slightly alkaline with a pH in the range of from 9.0 to 9.6.
The so-called neutraliser is, in fact, an oxidising agent rather than a neutraliser in the normal sense of acid/alkali neutralisation. The neutraliser, which normally contains a perborate, a bromate or hydrogen peroxide, is usually supplied in the form of a powder, which has to be dissolved in water before use, or in the form of a liquid which can be used as such. One form of neutraliser which is commercially available has to be shaken in an applicator bottle to produce a foam which is then applied to the hair.
The known neutralisers suffer from a number of disadvantages. Thus, those supplied in the form of a liquid are difficult to apply and it is difficult to ensure that neutralisation is complete. If it is not complete, damage can be caused to the hair, even when it is subsequently thoroughly washed.
Those supplied in the form of a powder must first be dissolved, which involves an additional and inconvenient step, and the solution obtained also suffers from the disadvantages of neutralisers supplied in liquid form.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a neutraliser which does not suffer from the disadvantages of the known neutralisers.
Thus, according to the present invention, there is provided a neutraliser in the form of a solution of an oxidising agent, together with an aerosol propellant.
If desired, the new neutraliser according to the present invention can also contain at least one additional component selected from foamproducing agents, hair-conditioning agents, ingredients to control the pH value and perfumes.
The oxidising agent can be used in an amount of from 2 to 20% w/v and preferably of from 5 to 6% w/v, based on the total volume of the aerosol composition. Preferred oxidising agents include sodium bromate and potassium bromate.
When a foam-producing agent is present, it is preferably used in a range of from 0.5 to 1 5.0% w/v and more preferably of 2 to 5% w/v, based on the total volume of the aerosol composition.
Examples of foam-producing agents which can be used include polyoxyethylene fatty acid esters, polyoxyethylene sorbitan esters, triethanolamine lauryl sulphate, polyoxyethylene alkyl aryl ethers and polyoxyethylated fatty alcohols.
When a hair-conditioning agent is present, it is preferably used in a range of from 0.5 to 2% w/v, based on the total volume of the aerosol composition. Examples of hair-conditioning agents which can be used include cetyl trimethylammonium chloride and stearyl dimethylammonium bromide.
The ingredients which can be used for controlling the pH value can be any of those compounds conventionally used for this purpose, for example sodium dihydrogen phosphate, sodium hydroxide and other acids, alkalis, acid salts and alkaline salts.
The propellant used according to the present invention is preferably a halogenated methane or ethane derivative, examples of such propellants including trichlorofluoromethane, dichlorodifluoromethane, chlorotrifluoromethane, tetrafluoromethane, dichlorofluoromethane, chlorodifluoromethane, tetrachlorodifluoroethane, trichlorotrifluoroethane and dichlorotetrafluoroethane. In addition to these halogenated propellants there can also be used a low boiling point aliphatic hydrocarbon, such as propane, butane or isobutane, compressed nitrogen, carbon dioxide or nitrous oxide or other non-toxic gases or compounds with very low boiling points which are known to be useful as propellants for aerosols.
In addition, the neutraliser composition according to the present invention desirably contains a perfume.
In comparison with previously known neutralisers, the neutralisers according to the present invention have the advantages of convenience in supply and use, cosmetic elegance and a reduced possibility of ingestion by children. Furthermore, they give a simultaneous reformation of broken disulphide bonds in hair which has been treated with a waving lotion and also provide a conditioning of the hair. They are ready for use so that no preparation is required, no additional containers are needed, no mixing is necessary, application is simplified since no application device is needed, such as rubber foam or cotton wool, there are no drips and thus there is no danger of contamination and the area where application has been made can easily be seen.
Furthermore, the new composition is easy and comfortable to use and there is little risk of irritation to the eyes, nose and ears.
