Abstract

A dashboard assembly for a motor vehicle has two storage trays (6, 7) formed in a sill between the windscreen (1) and the dashboard (2). <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Motor vehicle dashboard assembly The present invention relates to motor vehicle dashboard assemblies, and is particularly concerned with a dashboard assembly for a motor vehicle having an inclined windscreen and a dashboard extending substantially parallel to, and adjacent, the base of the windscreen.
The object of the present invention is to provide a motor vehicle dashboard assembly which makes optimum use of the confined space between the base of the windscreen and the dashboard, thereby increasing the readily accessible storage space available to a driver or front seat passenger of the vehicle.
According to the present invention there is provided a dashboard assembly for a motor vehicle having an inclined windscreen, including a dashboard extending substantially parallel to, and adjacent, the base of the windscreen, characterised in that the dashboard is spaced from the base of the windscreen by a sill having at least one depression forming a storage tray.
One embodiment of the present invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure lisa perspective view of a dashboard assembly according to the present invention incorporated in a motor vehicle, and Figure 2 is a section taken along the line ll-ll of Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a motor vehicle, such as a sports car, which is provided with a windscreen 1 having a substantial rearward inclination to the vertical, and an instrumentbearing dashboard 2 extending transverse the passenger compartment of the vehicle parallel to, and adjacent, the base of the windscreen 1.
The dashboard 2 is in the form of a strip having a rounded upper edge 3 which is secured to, and envelops, the free edge of a metal sill 4 (see Figure 2), the other edge or which is secured to the base of the windscreen 1. The sill 4 has a covering layer 5, for example, of plastics material, and made with two depressions, forming respective storage trays 6,7 arranged symmetrically on either side of the longitudinal median plane of the vehicle.
The trays 6,7 provide storage space for loose objects which is readily accessible to the driver or a front seat passenger of the vehicle, and makes the optimum use of the confined space between the dashboard 2 and the windscreen 1.
1. A dashboard assembly for a motor vehicle having an inclined windscreen, including a dash board extending substantially parallel to, and adja cent, the base of the windscreen, in which the dash board is spaced from the base of the windscreen by a sill having at least one depression forming a stor age tray.
2. A dashboard assembly as claimed in Claim 1, in which the sill is provided with two said trays arranged symmetrically on either side of the longitudinal median plane of the vehicle.
3. A dashboard assembly as claimed in Claim 1 and Claim 2, in which the dashboard has a rounded upper edge.
4. A dashboard assembly as claimed in Claim 3, in which the rounded upper edge of the dashboard is secured to, and envelops, the free edge of the sill.
5. A motor vehicle including a windscreen having a substantial rearward inclination to the vertical, and incorporating a dashboard assembly as claimed in Claims 1 to 4.
6. A dashboard assembly as herein described with reference to, and as shown in, the accompanying drawings.

CLAIMS
