The apparatus includes a housing 4 which can be fixed to the furniture 1 and in which a suspension part 7 is adjustably mounted. A setscrew 3 for effecting height adjustment is supported in the housing 4. The suspension part 7 is connected to the housing 4 by a knuckle joint 2 and the setscrew 3 engages the articulated joint between the knuckle joint levers 2. The apparatus is compact and can be mounted at the rear of the furniture while providing easy height adjustment, even for heavy articles of furniture. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATON
Improvements in or relating to suspension apparatuses
The invention relates to a suspension apparatus for furniture, such as wall cupboards (chests) or the like, with a housing which can be fixed in the wall cupboard and in which a suspension part is adjustably mounted, with a set-screw for effecting heightwise adjustment, this setscrew being supported in the housing.
Suspehsion apparatuses of this kind are widely used in modern furniture construction,-particularly in the construction offurnitureforthe kitchen and office. These suspension apparatuses serve the purpose of enabling, when a wall cupboard or chest is being suspended, any possible inaccuracies, which have arisen during the mounting of the wall hooks or of a carrier bar on the wall, to be compensated for and, further, of enabling the distance of the wall cupboard from the wall to be controlled.
Various proposals have been made for solving this problem.
The drawbacks of the known suspension apparatuses reside in the fact that, in many instances, the suspension apparatus is very large, or forwardly projects a relatively great distance into the inside of the chest (box); this has been frequenty found to be disadvantageous.
One known suspension apparatus provides a vertically arranged adjusting spindle, on which is mounted a hook part which can be adjusted in height through rotation of the adjusting spindle about its own axis.
In oneform of construction it has been found that the force exerted by the weight of the wall cupboard produces such a greattorque between hook part and spindle that rotation of the spindle, and hence adjustment of the hook part, is often rendered difficult.
An object of the invention is to provide a suspension apparatus of the type defined at the outset which enables the suspension apparatus to be readily susceptible to adjustment, while at the same time only a small amount of space is required; this easy adjustability can also be realised when the wall cupboard is heavy.
According to the invention, there is provided suspension apparatus for wall cupboards, chests or the like, comprising a housing which can be fixed in the wall chest and in which a suspension part is adjustably mounted, and a setscrew for effecting heightwise adjustment supported in the housing, the suspension part being connected to the housing by way of a knuckle joint, and the setscrew which is provided for effecting heightwise adjustment, engaging the articulated joint between the two knuckel joint levers.
The space occupied by the suspension apparatus according to the invention in the depthwise dimension of the article of furniture is so small that the suspension apparatus can be located outside the storage (conservation) space, that is to say behind the rear wall at the wall cupboard.
Conveniently, the setscrew is guided, in the housing, in an elongate, vertical hole.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the -suspension part comprises a vertical slot through which extends a screw which is directed perpendicu larly-oftheattachmentwall and is rotatably mounted in the housing; this screw carries a nut which engages the suspension part at the side of the suspension part lying closer to the attachment wall.
Dub to the rotatable mounting ofthe suspension part on the knuckle joint the depthwise adjustment ofthe suspension apparatus can take place completely independently of the heightwise adjustment.
Due to the fact that the wall cupboard always presses, with its weight; away from the wall, it- suffices to provide a single nut, on the side of thesuspension part lying closer to the attachment wall, on the screw provided for effecting the depthwise adjustment.
There may be provided, in the connecting joint and between the two knuckle joint levers, a cylinder whose longitudinal centre axis at least approximate- ly coincides with the axis of rotation of the connecting joint; this cylinder comprises a radially longitudinally-directed opening with a female screw-thread into which engages the screw provided for effecting the heightwise adjustment.
The provision of the cylinder enables the knuckle joint lever to be secured in a stable way, and also enables the setscrew, provided for effecting heightwise adjustment, to be received in such a way that it cannot become tilted. An embodiment of the invention is described below in detail, with reference to the figures of the appended drawing, although the invention is not to be restricted to the embodiment illustrated. In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is an elevational view, seen from the front of the chest, of a suspension apparatus constituting a preferred embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is cross-sectional view taken along line
B-C of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the knuckle joint; and
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the suspension part.
The suspension apparatus comprises a housing 4 which is mounted, directly belowthetop (1) of the wall chest or cupboard, in an opening in the rear wall 8 of the article of furniture.
The knuckle joint, which is formed by the two knuckle joint levers 2, is mounted -in the upper part of the housing 4 by means of a pin 11. In the lower part of the housing 4 the knuckle joint 2 is connected, by way of a pin 12, to the suspension part 7; which is constituted as a hook. The setscrew 3, provided for effecting heightwise adjustment, engages the central joint 13 between the two knuckle joint levers 2; more specifically, the setscrew 3 projects into a female screwthread in a cylinder 14.
On the housing side the setscrew 3 is guided in an elongate hole 15. Thus, the setscrew 3 is held in the housing 4 in such a way that it cannot be moved in the axial direction although it-can move, within the elongate hole 15, in the heightwise dimension of the article of furniture.
As is particularly apparent from Figure 4 the suspension part 7 is provided with a slot 16 through which extends a screw 5 provided for effecting depthwise adjustment. Apart from the fact that it can turn about its own axis, the screw-5 is stationarily mounted in the housing 4. A nut 6 is arranged on the side of the screw 5 lying close to the wall. Adjustment by means of the suspension apparatus is carried out in the following way. By turning the setscrew 4, provided for heightwise adjustment, about its own axis the angle included by the levers of the knuckle joint, relative to one another, is increased or decreased, that is to say the distance is altered between the pins 11 and 12. Consequently, the position of the suspension part 7 is altered in the heightwise dimension of the article of furniture.The setscrew 3 is, on each occasion, moved to a distance which equals ha If the path of movement of the suspension part 7 in the housing 4; this is rendered possible by the slot 15 in the housing 4.
By virtue of the provision of the elongate hole 16 the screw 5, used for depthwise adjustment, does not obstruct this displacement.
In order to effect depthwise adjustment the screw 5 is turned about its own axis, as a result of which the nut 6 rides along the screw 5. As the suspension part 7 is always pulled outwardly, i.e. towards the wall, by the weight 8 of the wall chest, the depthwise adjustment of the wall chest (cupboard) is controlled by the nut 6. In order to secure the position of the suspension apparatus with the maximum firmness, this apparatus is provided with dowel pins 10, which extend into corresponding bores in the side wall 9 of the article of furniture, and securely anchor the housing 4 in this wall 9,
In the embodiment described the suspension apparatus is located outside the wall cupboard proper, that is to say in the area between the rear edges of the top 1 and the side wall 9 of the rear wall 8 of the cupboard.
