Abstract

A boot or shoe comprises a moulded sole unit having at its upper edge an outwardly directed flange 11 to which is secured the out-turned edge 13 of the upper, the sole unit being moulded from polyurethane and having the flange and the side 14b and bottom 14a wall portions of the unit of higher density than the central portions of the unit. In a preferred construction the higher density portions of the sole unit form a shell within which the lower density central portion is moulded subsequently. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements relating to footwear This invention relates to footwear.
According to this invention there is provided an article of footwear comprising a moulded polyurethane sole unit which provides the sole and heel of the article and which has at or adjacent its outer upper edge a laterally outwardly projecting flange extending along the full length of the periphery of the unit so as to form a laterally facing rebate beneath the flange, and an upper the lower edge portion of which is turned outward and secured to the top surface of the flange, the sole unit having a central portion bounded at its sides and bottom by side wall and bottom wall portions respectively which together with the flange are of higher density than the central portion.
The invention also provides an article of footwear comprising a moulded sole unit which provides the sole and heel of the article and which has at its outer upper edge a laterally outwardly projecting flange extending along the full length of the periphery of the unit so as to form a laterally facing rebate beneath the flange, and an upper the lower edge portion of which is turned outward and secured to the top surface of the flange, the flange and side and bottom wall portions of the sole unit defining a shell which is made from polyurethane and which is filled with a flexible material having a lower density than that of the shell.
According to a preferred feature of the invention, the shell and the filling are both made from polyurethane, the material of the filling being in the form of a foam. The polyurethane of the shell is preferably solid or virtually solid.
One embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a completed article of footwear according to the invention, and Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawings, a boot is shown comprising a sole unit 10 having at its upper edge a laterally outwardly directed flange 11 which extends along the whole length of the periphery of the unit, and an upper 12 the lower edge 13 of which is turned outward and stitched to the flange 11.
The sole unit is of the wedge heel type and comprises a moulded outer shell 14, providing the bottom wall 1 4a, the side walls 1 4b and the flange 1 and a filling 1 5 the upper surface of which is smooth and continuous and flush with the top surface of the flange. The sole unit is manufactured in two stages. In the first stage the ehell is moulded from virtually solid polyurethane, and in the second stage the shell is filled with polyurethane foam. The thickness of the shell is preferably in the range 3 to 4 mm.The sole unit thus has wearing surfaces which are robust and well adapted to withstand the wear and constant flexing, and has a foot-supporting central portion made from a filling which is comfortable to the wearer and which readily accommodates the small variations in length occurring as the unit flexes in wear.
If desired the top surface of the sole unit may be covered by a sock 1 7 and the outer edge of the sock may be secured between the flange and the upper as shown.
1. An article of footwear comprising a moulded polyurethane sole unit which provides the sole and heel of the article and which has at or adjacent its upper edge a laterally outwardly projecting flange extending along the full length of the periphery of the unit so as to form a laterally facing rebate beneath the flange, and an upper the lower edge portion of which is turned outward and secured to the top surface of the flange, the sole unit having a central portion bounded at its sides and bottom by side wall and bottom wall portions respectively which together with the flange are of higher density than the central portion.
2. An article of footwear comprising a moulded sole unit which provides the sole and heel of the article and which has at its outer upper edge a laterally outwardly projecting flange extending along the full length of the periphery of the unit so as to form a laterally facing rebate beneath the flange, and an upper the lower edge portion of which is turned outward and secured to the top surface of the flange, the flange and side and bottom wall portions of the sole unit defining a shell which is made from polyurethane and which is filled with a flexible material having a lower density than that of the shell.
3. An article as claimed in claim 2, wherein the filling comprises a foamed polyurethane material.
4. An article as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the said flange and side and bottom wall portions of the sole unit are made from solid or substantially solid polyurethane.
5. An article of footwear substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
