Abstract
Expanded plastics material, e.g. polyurethane foam, is reinforced with fibrous material for use in packaging.
Description
SPECIFICATION
Materials
The present invention relates to materials. In particular the present invention relates to materials for use in packaging.
The present invention provides a material comprising an expanded plastics material reinforced with a fibrous material.
Preterably the expanded plastics material is a urethane foam such as a polyurethane foam which is conveniently a semi-flexible polyurethane foam.
Examples of fibrous material for reinforcing the plastics material are: wood fibre, glass fibre, nylon, shredded paper and scrim fibre. In fact most fibrous materials are suitable for use as reinforcing.
Plastics material, particularly polyurethane foam, is increasingly being used for packaging articles.
However such packaging in itself provides little or no protection for a packaged article where the latter is of considerable weight or subject to extensive impact shock which might occur during handling of the packaged article. The present invention provides a material which may be used for packaging and which has an improved point loading or impact strength which can be as high as three or more times that of pure polyurethane foam.
Typical densities of expanded plastics material used are 6 to 90 Kg/mu23 particularly 6.4 and 9.6
Kg/m3 but can be as high as 53 Kgm/m3 or more.
The quantity of fibre used per m3 of expanded plastics material depends upon the intended application of the material but a typical range is up to 5
Kgm/m3 of expanded plastics material. Typical amounts are 2.88 and 4.96 Kgm/m3 although the fibrous material can occupy up to as much as 50% of the total volume of the material according to the invention.
Distribution of the fibrous material throughout the expanded plastics material may be varied to provided localised ares of increased strength, if desired.
The material according to the invention can be prepared simply py injecting the expanded plastics material into a mould containing the fibrous material. The latter can, of course be blown in with the plastics material, if desired. Inserts of suitable material such as plastics, plywood or metal can be included in the mould to provide localised strengthening ofthe material.
When used for packaging an article the material according to the present invention can be free moulded around the article with the latter in a suitable container such as cardboard box or a crate.
Sheets of the material may also be moulded, such sheets being typically 1.25 to 7.5 cm thick.
While the above description relates in part to packaging it will be understood that the material according to the present invention has numerous other uses.
