Abstract

The aid is placed inside the bed, between the top and bottom sheets. When the patient wishes to use the aid, he takes hold of the HANDLE attached to which is a CORD which is attached to a pawl. Therefore, when the HANDLE is pulled, the PAWL will lift out of the step and allow the FOOT REST to move in either direction along the GUIDE RAIL. When the patient releases the pressure on the HANDLE the SPRING will return the PAWL, under pressure, into the locked position. With the FOOT REST (I) in the locked position the patient will not slide down the bed. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Adjustable positioning nursing aid The aid is a device which is positioned at the foot of a bed, between the top and bottom sheets. Its purpose is to enable a patient to change position from prone to sitting or viceversa, unassisted.
To change position from prone to sitting, the feet are placed on the foot-rest and the patient pulls himself into a sitting position by the handles, which are connected to a cord attached to the foot-rest. With knees bent, he continues to pull on handles and push on foot-rest, which is worked by means of a ratchet arrangement, and so is able to reach the head of the bed. The patient may then stay in the sitting position in order to eat, read etc. without sliding back down the bed, as the ratchet arrangement will hold foot-rest in place.
To reverse the position i.e., from sitting to prone, the patient need only release the ratchet, hold the handles, and gradually slide down the bed, pushing on the foot-rest. When the aid is back in position, the patient can gently lower himself into the prone position with the aid of the handles.
The aim of this aid is to enable patients to change position in bed unassisted, thus freeing nursing staff to carry out other duties. It may also help eliminate back troubles of nursing staff caused by lifting patients. The footrest has the added advantage of supporting bed coverings for the greater comfort of patients.
I claim that this aid was designed to reduce the risk of back injuries to nursing staff when lifting patients from one position to another.
As the name implies, the aid will assist in keeping the patient in a position which will suit his needs.
The main aim is keep the patient in the sitting position for the purpose of eating, reading, clearing the chest when coughing after an operation etc., and prevent them from sliding down the bed.
With the aid in position, the patient can, in most cases, use the aid without any assistance.
